About this file
This is a mortar cube compression test report prepared by U.P. Engineers & Architects, Inc. for the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) related to the Fayette Historic State Park Furnace Stacks project. The report documents testing results for Mix #3 mortar supplied by Olsen and Olsen, the project contractor. Three 2x2x2 inch mortar cubes were molded on August 9, 2024, and tested at 7 and 28 days to verify compliance with the specified design strength of 1500 psi. The mortar mixture consists of 2 parts white cement, 2 parts lime, 7 parts sand, and 2 parts water. Testing was conducted using a water bath curing method, with cubes tested on August 16, 2024 (7-day) and September 6, 2024 (28-day).
The 7-day test result for Cube #13 achieved 1510 psi, meeting the 1500 psi design strength requirement at 100 percent. The 28-day test results exceeded specifications, with Cube #14 achieving 1930 psi (128 percent of design) and Cube #15 achieving 2015 psi (134 percent of design), yielding an average 28-day strength of 1972.5 psi. All cubes exhibited Type 2 fracture patterns (long shear plane), indicating proper mortar performance. Per standard protocol, hold cubes will be discarded following confirmation that the 28-day testing meets design strength requirements.
