About this file
This memorandum directs the standardization of Motorola brand hand-held radios fleetwide for NOAA Marine Operations vessels. Most ships currently use Motorola radios, which is a US-based manufacturer and approved secure telecommunications product. Standardizing to a single brand will increase purchasing efficiency and the ability to maintain spares by providing flexibility for spare and accessory use as well as radio programming licenses. The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for the design and installation of a Motorola radio repeater aboard the Oscar Dyson vessel.

MEMORANDUM FOR: Marine Operations Acquisitions
FROM: Brian Kelly, Chief, Marine Engineering Branch
SUBJECT: Fleet Standardization – Motorola Radios
In an effort to increase purchasing efficiency and our ability to maintain fleet spares, all
NOAA Marine Operations vessels will standardize hand-held radios to Motorola brand. Most ships currently utilize this brand, which is a US-based manufacturer and has been previously approved as a secure telecommunications product.
Hand held radios are critical for security and safety during ship operations. A single brand name will provide the most flexibility for use of spares and accessories, as well as licenses for radio programming.
