UNCLASSIFIED

UNCLASSIFIED

What is a MAGTF?

The MAGTF is the Marine Corps’ principle organization for conducting missions across the full spectrum of military operations MAGTFs provide COCOMs, JTF CRDs, or other functional commanders with scalable, versatile naval expeditionary forces able to respond to a broad range of crisis and conflict situations They are balanced, combined-arms force packages containing organic command, ground, aviation, and sustainment elements A single commander leads and coordinates this combined-arms team from peacetime training through deployment MAGTF teams live and train together, further increasing their cohesion and fighting power

MAGTF

It Depends!!!

UNCLASSIFIED

A MAGTF is:

The Marine Corps’ principal organization for all missions across the range of military operations A balanced, air-ground-logistics combined arms task organization of Marine Corps forces under a single commander Task organized in size and capability according to the assigned mission, threat, and battlespace environment Specifically tailored for rapid deployment by air or sea and ideally suited for a forward presence role

UNCLASSIFIED

UNCLASSIFIED

MAGTF Roles A MAGTF provides the Naval, Joint or Multinational commander with a readily available force capable of operating as— A forward-deployed force providing a strong deterrence in a crisis area A land force or the landward portion of a naval force conducting Stability and Support Operations such as non-combatant evacuations, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief or the tactical recovery of an aircraft or aircrew A force conducting training with allied forces as part of a theater engagement plan The landing force of an amphibious task organization A land force in sustained operations ashore

The MEF is the principal Marine Corps warfighting organization, particularly during larger crises or contingencies.

It is normally commanded by a Lieutenant General.

A MEF can range in size from less than one to multiple divisions and aircraft wings, together with one or more Marine Logistics Groups.

Equipped with 60 days of supplies, MEFs are capable of both amphibious operations and sustained operations ashore in any geographic environment.

With appropriate augmentation, the MEF command element is capable of performing as a Joint Task Force (JTF) headquarters.

Marine Air Ground Task Forces are categorized into four types. There are three standing Marine Expeditionary Forces, or MEFs, which are the largest, and from which geographical combatant commanders draw upon to get scalable MAGTFs to project combat power across the spectrum of conflict.

As you can see here, the possibilities range from small, special-purpose MAGTFs, up to a decisive force of 100,00 troops prepared for sustained combat operations.

SCMAGTF is new, used for engagement purposes

Anatomy of a MAGTF

Ground Combat Element (GCE) Aviation Combat Element (ACE) Logistics Combat Element (LCE)

Command Element (CE)

MAGTF Comparison The MEU is best suited for operations across the lower end of the spectrum of military operations.

The MEB is a medium-sized, task-organized MAGTF able to respond across the range of military operations.

The MEF is best suited for campaigns and major combat operations.

MSTP Background Origin: Operation DESERT STORM Significant warfighting deficiencies at MEF-level Planning and executing a MAGTF fight MCO 1500.53 written 15 Apr 93: Gen Boomer Mar 2012: MSTP Division (MSTP “D”) created by CG TECOM

The basis for the MSTP origin stems from issues encountered in the stand-up and execution of I MEF operations in DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM in 1990-91. Gen Boomer’s observations and direction regarding I MEF’s planning and execution led to the first MSTP order, MCO 1500.3, in 1993. The order dated 30 Aug 2002, provides detailed information regarding the mission and CMC intent for MSTP, along with a detailed concept of operations and associated tasks. The current order, MCO 1500.53B, is dated 5 Mar 13, with several updates.

Only deployable staff training program in support of the MEB/MEF CE
