(U) SCOPE

(U) Identification

(U) This Specification defines the AN/TPS-59A(V)3 Radar System’s Secondary Surveillance Radar, Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) Antenna Performance requirements. The antenna is a component of the IFF subsystem and a subgroup of the Antenna Transmitter Group (ATG).

(U) The existing Flat Plate IFF Antenna (808400/000) is a Line Replaceable Unit that is no longer manufactured and is obsolete. The Radar System has an extended service life through 2035 and requires a replacement IFF Antenna for continued support through the service life of the radar.

(U) System Overview

(U) The AN/TPS-59A(V)3 is a transportable, long-range, solid state, 3-Dimensional L-band radar. The AN/TPS-59A(V)3 is comprised of an ATG, Signal Data Processing Group, Power Distribution Unit, Equipment Transport Shelter, and System Cables.

(U) The AN/TPS-59A(V)3 Radar System provides electronically scanned in elevation and continuous mechanical rotation in azimuth, automatic radar and IFF target detection and processing. The radar provides a maximum Air-Breathing Target (ABT) surveillance volume of 4 to 300 nautical miles in range, 0.5 to 19.0 degrees in elevation, 100,000 feet in altitude, and 360 degrees in azimuth.

(U) The system performs detection of ABTs by the primary radar and detection of IFF targets by the IFF interrogator. ABT and IFF targets are correlated into a single report if they are from the same target. ABT, IFF, and correlated ABT and IFF targets are sent to the Command and Control (C2) node, as well as providing this data to the Cooperative Engagement Processor external interface in its role as a surveillance radar.

(U) The current MARK XII IFF secondary surveillance system (AN/UPX-37, AN/UPA-61, KIT-1C, KIR-1C, KIV-77/78, etc.) is capable of interrogating Targets of Opportunity using Modes 1, 2, 3/A, C and 4. The AN/UPX-37 will be replaced by the AN/UPX-41(C) Digital Interrogator, the CP-2819 Processor and interconnecting cables. The radar is being upgraded to the MARK XIIA IFF secondary surveillance system capability for Mode 5 (Levels 1 & 2) and Mode S (Levels 1 & 2), in addition to the existing interrogation modes.
