The first two digits signify the National Codification Bureau that assigned the NIIN, while the last seven digits are non-significant and are sequentially assigned by the FLIS. |
The last 9 digits of the NSN that differentiates each individual supply item from all other supply items. The first 2 digits signify the National Codification Bureau that assigned the NIIN, while the last 7 digits are insignificant and are sequentially assigned by the FLIS. All U.S. manufactured items have a National Codification Bureau Code of "00" (cataloged before 1975) or "01" (cataloged in 1975, or later). (DoD 4140.1-R). MCO 4400.150
DoD 4140.27-M National Stock Number (NSN) Construction The NSN is a 13 digit number that is used to identify items, and is assigned by the Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS) to convey specific information about an item of supply. It is comprised of the Federal Supply Class (FSC), which is four digits, and the NIIN, which is nine digits.
This code is found in the following systems: GCSS-MC (Parts Requirement form), ICP Purpose/Use: A National Stock Number is simply the official label applied to an item of supply that is repeatedly procured, stocked, stored, issued, and used throughout the federal supply system. It is a unique item identifying series of numbers. When a NSN is assigned to an item of supply, data is assembled to describe the item. Some data elements include information such as an item name, manufacturer's part number, unit price, and physical and performance characteristics. NSNs are an essential part of the military's logistics supply chain used in managing, moving, storing, and disposing of material. The use of NSNs facilitates the standardization of item names, supply language, characteristics and management data and aids in reducing duplicate items in the federal inventory. It also helps to standardize the military requirements for testing and evaluation of potential items of supply, as well as identifying potential duplicate items. See the National Stock Number Tab for more information. Marine Corps User MANUAL: UM 4000.125 (last updated in April 2015).

| Operating / Demand Stocks | Stock in this category is purchased and placed in stock for anticipated use to support ground common assets. Stock belonging to the SMU should not appear in using unit operating stocks unless authorized by HHQ and the AAC is figured into the SMU’s ODP/ASCP forecasting application. If the AAC is not in the ODP/ASCP forecast the SMU cannot ‘see’ these stocks and add it in to the stock levels to derive a forecast. If the stock does belong to the SMU and the AAC does reside in the forecast ASCP then the unit does not need to ‘pre-purchase’ these stocks but hold stocks and pay for the stock as it is used. | Marine Corps User MANUAL: UM 4000.125 (last updated in April 2015). |

| Perpetual Inventory | Inventory available for general use (end items, consumables, reparables). |
Perpetual inventory is defined as a method of recording inventory balances after every receipt and issue to facilitate regular checking. This system implies continuous maintenance of inventory records and in its broad sense as it covers both continuous physical inventory counts as well as up to date recording of the accountable record balance. The accountable record balance and physical inventory count, if accomplished with a high level of inventory discipline, should invariably match at any given time.
Material residing in perpetual inventory is placed in categorized sub-inventories. These sub-inventories, based on their code, facilitate what ‘type’ or ‘purpose’ the material or inventory is intended. Common examples include: 01A Serviceable material/equipment, 01F Unserviceable material/equipment, STAGE Staging Sub-inventory utilized by the system in the shipping process, COMM_STAGE Commodity inbound/outbound, COM_LAY Commodity layettes, COMM_PEB commodity bench stock, COMM_CLD Commodity critical low density spares, COMM_U Commodity Usable, COMM_D Commodity Defective Marine Corps User MANUAL: UM 4000.125 (last updated in April 2015).

| Reparable Issue Point (RIP) | The reparable issue point (RIP) is the focal point for management of reparable assests at the Intermediate level of inventory. Its operation is described as a pool of repairable components located in an area to ensure immediate availability for consumers. It is operated on a direct exchange (unserviceable item exchanged for a serviceable item) basis. The RIP serves as the intermediary between consumer and supporting repair facilities. |
The RIP is the focal point, within the MEF, for the management of reparable assets at the Intermediate level of inventory. These assets include components of major end items that directly affect the end item readiness. The RIP is operated on a direct exchange (unserviceable asset exchanged for a serviceable asset) basis. The RIP serves as the intermediary between the Using Unit and the support repair facilities.
A RIP is an issue point established as a point of exchange for secondary depot reparables and field level reparables, as defined by the SMRC. Formerly known as maintenance floats, RIPS may preposition assets as required to support geographically separated/Deployed units. Marine Corps User MANUAL: UM 4000.125 (last updated in April 2015).
