About this file

This document is a technical instruction manual with photographs for the assembly, installation, and transportation of AV-8B aircraft components, specifically the wing fixture and fuselage dolly used for crash testing and shipping operations.

The manual provides detailed photographic guidance for installing the wing, horizontal stabilizer, and vertical stabilizer onto the AV-8 wing dolly fixture. Key assembly procedures include: checking the stand for four wing mount bolts, one vertical stab bolt, and one horizontal stab link or hook; installing the horizontal stabilizer first with minimum four personnel to prevent damage; rotating the stab tip downward and rolling the rail into the stand with adjustments as needed; securing the horizontal stabilizer with a tie-down hook and turnbuckle; installing the vertical stabilizer rudder-down with Door 81 removed, requiring multiple personnel to prevent damage; and securing with a vertical stab bolt only after the rail is rolled into the stand. For wing installation, the manual specifies using either a CFR crane or Cobra crane, raising the wing platform past level to allow support braces to swing up, installing aft bolts first then forward bolts with some lateral movement required, sealing fuel lines prior to lowering to vertical position, using rubber pads or mats to protect from chain damage, and employing proper personnel positioning with a supervisor and personnel monitoring attach points. The fuselage dolly section addresses positioning the dolly with the wide end forward and anti-collision cutout to the rear, balancing fuselage weight with ten bags of Speedy Dry or sand plus 500 pounds of water when the engine is installed, using straps to control swinging and maintain level aircraft, employing proper personnel positioning during hoisting, ensuring all sling pins are installed and plungers locked (twelve total), verifying fuselage configuration matches sling position, centering crane cable, positioning speed brakes in retracted position, double-checking all safety areas before lifting, removing jacks immediately after fuselage height permits, backing the truck into position, using Speedy Dry bags under the nose for protection, positioning personnel at cradling points during fuselage placement, ensuring fasteners are flush to prevent panel damage, and confirming proper anti-collision light and lids fence positioning in their cutouts before securing for transport.
