About this file
This is a specification package and bid proposal form for a roof replacement project issued by Lamphere Public Schools, a public school district located in Madison Heights, Michigan. The project involves complete replacement of the asphalt shingle roofing system on the Little League Baseball Facility, including removal of existing shingles, underlayment, and flashings down to the wood decking, repair or replacement of defective deck substrate, installation of ice and water shield at eave edges, synthetic underlayment, new sheet metal and penetration flashings per NRCA standards, and installation of 25-year workmanship and 40-year (lifetime) material warranted asphalt shingles. The contractor must commence work on or after October 14, 2026, and fully complete the project by December 1, 2026. Work is restricted to normal business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with weekend work permitted under the same parameters. The project site remains occupied by the school, and contractors must coordinate with school operations, maintain access to facilities, and provide 72 hours' notice before activities affecting operations. Contractor parking, dumpster placement, and material storage are designated on the west side of the building.
Bidders must submit a base bid for the complete roof replacement work and provide unit prices for potential additional deck material repairs determined necessary during construction, to be billed on a per-board basis. The specification requires use of approved shingle manufacturers including GAF Timberline HDZ, Certainteed Landmark Pro, or Owens Corning Duration, with installer qualifications including manufacturer certification and minimum five years' experience. Contractors must furnish certificates of insurance before commencing work, including property damage coverage of $1,000,000 per accident, bodily injury coverage of $1,000,000 per person, workers' compensation, and completed operations insurance of $500,000. The roofing installer provides a three-year warranty against defective workmanship and materials following project completion. Bids may not be withdrawn for 60 days after opening, and the school board reserves the right to accept or reject any bid or award to other than the low bidder. Unit prices for labor and materials on a time-and-material basis for unforeseen repairs must also be provided by the contractor.

1. Only those valley installations listed in the manufacturer's written installation manual shall be permitted.
2. Open metal valley installation:
a. Install specified metal valley flashing.
(1) Beginning at the low point of the roof, install metal flashing.
(2) Fasten through metal at high side only, do not penetrate metal along sides.
(3) Install clips along sides or install fasteners along both sides of metal flashing to hold flashing in place.
(4) Over lap next section of metal flashing 12 inches onto the first, set in full application of specified asphalt mastic, repeat fastening procedure.
(5) Repeat installation for additional metal flashing sections.
b. Prior to installation of shingles, snap two chalk lines along the full length of the metal valley. Snap one chalk line on each side of the valley center line, so that the lines diverge (separate, widen apart) as they progress downslope.
c. When the shingles are installed to the lines, the resultant valley will gradually become wider toward the bottom than it is at the top. Set the

diverge at a rate of 1/8 inch per foot downslope.
d. Trim the last shingle along the chalked line.
3. Closed-cut valley installation:
a. Install first course of shingles on the roof area with the lowest slope, or if slopes are equivalent, on the side with the shortest distance to the ridge (or side that will receive the lowest volume of runoff. The intent is for the shingles on the side of the valley that will be cut not to buck water. Run shingles through valley, extending onto adjoining roof area 12 inches minimum. Install first course of shingles through valley, extending onto adjoining roof area 12 inches minimum.
b. Continue to apply the second and succeeding courses, extending full shingles through the valley in the same manner as the first course.
c. Press shingles firmly into valley to conform smoothly to substrate. Nail each shingle in normal manner (along manufacturer’s specified “nail zone”) with correct number and placement of fasteners. Do not nail closer than 6 inches to the center of valley. Two nails shall be placed at end of each terminating shingle.
d. Prior to applying shingles on the intersecting roof area, snap a chalk line a minimum 2 inches beyond the center of the valley (the first roof area where shingles have been installed.
e. Install first course of shingles to opposing side. Shingles shall extend over previously installed shingles and beyond the chalk line, so when trimmed, a clean cut edge or line is created. Use care when cutting not to damage underlying shingles.
f. Cut top corner of shingle nearest valley center line 1 inch by 45 degrees prior to installing next shingle course.
g. Set shingle in 3 inch wide troweled application of specified roof cement.
h. Succeeding courses shall be installed as first course.

1. Install individual step flashings per shingle course at wall intersections.
2. Install step flashing over top half of shingle so that step flashing extends above top of shingle. Each step flashing shall be placed just upslope from the exposed edge of shingle that will overlap it. Nail step flashing near the upper corner of the flange. Fasten through the flange into the wood deck, do not fasten step flashings to both deck and wall.
3. Install the first course of shingle, and butt end of shingle that intersects the wall firmly against the step flashing. Fasten shingle in place, move the nail that would be driven near the edge of the shingle nearest the wall (that would be driven through the step flashing) over slightly so metal flange is not punctured by nail.
4. Adhere shingle to step flashing with specified asphalt mastic.
5. Install second step flashing, being sure to overlap the first a minimum 2 inches.
Fasten this step flashing to the deck through the upper corner.

Adhere shingles to metal flange in a bed of specified roof cement. Do not fasten shingles through the metal flashing flange.
