About this file
This specification sheet outlines equipment requirements for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency - Occupational Health and Safety (IEMA-OHS) Calibration Lab in Springfield, Illinois. The deliverable is a Linear Positioning System (LPS) designed for radiation instrument calibration and testing that will enable precise positioning of radiation survey instruments and dosimetry devices relative to a radiation source. The system must feature an X-axis (beam axis) with a minimum 9-meter linear travel range and 1mm positioning accuracy, stepper-motor drive, and a user interface for position entry and display; a Z-axis (vertical) with 30cm minimum travel below the beam centerline, also with 1mm accuracy and stepper-motor automation; and an instrument platform measuring 50cm x 50cm with grid engraving, tapped holes at 10cm intervals, and 100-pound load capacity. The system must also include a fixed irradiator stand with 250-pound load capacity supporting the agency's portable irradiators (IDNS and JLS models) at a height positioning the beam line 1.0-1.5 meters above the finished floor. All equipment must be delivered and installed by June 30, 2027, with vendor-provided onsite installation and acceptance testing to the Springfield facility located at 1301 Knotts Street.
The specification requires stepper-motor driven motion control with limit switches, homing functions, and safety interlocks, along with a console-mounted or PC-based graphical interface capable of real-time position display with 1mm resolution and instrument offset settings. System design must ensure minimal vibration and sag during dynamic motion, use materials resistant to warping or drift, incorporate cable management for unrestricted X-axis travel, and utilize standard M6x1.0 thread specifications for all tapped holes. All system components must be able to pass through a 48-inch nominal doorway for installation. Deliverables include mechanical drawings with dimensional specifications, operation and maintenance manuals, and a recommended spare parts list, all to be provided upon delivery. The vendor must supply all necessary transportation, installation tools, and equipment, with all hardware carrying the standard manufacturer's warranty transferable to IEMA-OHS.

| Specification | Sheet: Linear | Positioning | System | (LPS) | for | Radiation | Instrument |
| Calibration | and | Testing |
1. Purpose
The Linear Positioning System (LPS) will be used in a radiation calibration laboratory to accurately position radiation survey instruments and dosimetry devices at known distances and vertical alignments relative to a radiation source. The system must enable precise, repeatable motion along the beam axis and vertical translation to align instruments at the beam centerline.
2. System Overview & Functional Requirements
a. Axes of Motion
i. X-Axis (beam axis):
Minimum linear travel: 9 meters
Function: Adjust distance between radiation source and target
Positioning accuracy: 1 mm
Automation: Stepper-motor driven
User interface for:
o Commanded position entry o Display of actual position o Instrument Offset capability to compensate for instruments not centered on the platform
ii. Z-Axis (vertical positioning):
Minimum travel: 30 cm below the beam centerline
Function: Vertical alignment of instrument at beam centerline
Positioning accuracy: 1 mm
Stepper-motor driven and fully automated
User interface identical in capability to X-axis
3. Instrument Platform Requirements
a. Platform size: 50 cm × 50 cm
b. Surface: 1 cm grid engraving for visual alignment
c. Mechanical interface:
i. Holes drilled and tapped at 10 cm intervals
ii. Must allow jigs and fixtures to be bolted and reproducibly placed
iii. Load capacity: ≥100 lbs, with no measurable deflection under full load
iv. Platform must allow stable, repeatable mounting of multiple instrument form factors
4. Irradiator Stand Requirements
a. A fixed stand or table must be installed at one end of the LPS to support the agency’s portable, manually operated irradiators
b. Load capacity: ≥250 lbs
c. Height: Beam line located 1.0-1.5 meters above finished floor
d. Stand must include holes drilled and tapped at locations appropriate for securely mounting and accurately aligning irradiators along the X-axis
e. Additional irradiator specifications for bolt pattern and alignment features are found at the end of this document. Drawings include the following:
i. IDNS Cradle Drawing: This support cradle is used to seat the IDNS Irradiator on the stand. The cradle will sit directly on the stand, such that the irradiator shutter can be swung open.
ii. IDNS Irradiator: The IDNS irradiator weighs approximately 200 lbs and sits horizontally on the cradle.
iii. JLS Irradiator: The JLS irradiator weighs approximately 60 lbs and sits directly on the stand.
5. Controls & Interface
a. Graphical or digital user interface capable of:
i. Selecting desired X and Z axis positions
ii. Displaying real-time actual positions with 1 mm resolution
iii. Setting and applying X-axis Instrument Offset values
iv. Interface must be console-mounted, or PC-based
v. Motion control must prevent overshooting and provide smooth, repeatable travel
vi. Limit switches, homing functions, and safety interlocks must be included
6. Accuracy & Performance
a. Linear positioning accuracy: 1 mm (both axes)
b. Repeatability: 1 mm or better
c. Environmental: Suitable for indoor laboratory use near radiation fields
7. Structural & Mechanical Requirements
a. Mechanically rigid construction ensuring minimal vibration and sag along X-axis under dynamic motion
b. Materials chosen to minimize long-term warping or drift
c. Cable management must allow full X-axis travel without binding or obstruction
d. All tapped holes must be provided with standard thread specification (M6x1.0)
8. Documentation & Deliverables
a. Mechanical drawings and dimensional specifications
b. Operation and maintenance manual
c. Recommended spare parts list
d. Items a, b and c are to be provided when the equipment is delivered
9. Installation
a. Vendor shall ship or transport all components and any tools or equipment necessary for installation to 1301 Knotts Street, Springfield, IL 62703
b. Components must be able to pass through a 48-inch nominal doorway prior to installation
c. Vendor shall perform onsite installation and acceptance testing
d. All equipment must be received and installed by June 30, 2027.
e. All equipment must come with the standard manufacturer’s warranty and be transferable to IEMA-OHS.
