About this file

This document includes a ground penetrating radar scan report and related federal contract solicitation. The ground penetrating radar scan report documents work performed at Robins Air Force Base to scan an area where concrete saw cutting was planned. The scan identified unknown conduits at depths of 2-3 inches beneath the slab in the cutting area. The effective depth of the scan was approximately 12 inches. The related federal contract solicitation is a total small business set-aside for a turnkey ultrasonic non-destructive testing inspection system at Robins Air Force Base. The system is to utilize through transmission and pulse echo testing to identify internal flaws, water, delamination, and disbonds through a two tower gantry mounted system to be installed in Building 169. The solicitation also includes an option to retrofit the existing system in Building 323 with new motion and ultrasonic components. The contractor must provide all labor, materials, shipping, and travel to deliver the required system.

EQUIPMENT USED

The following equipment was used on this project:

Underground Scanning GPR antenna. Typically capable of detecting objects up to 8' deep or more in ideal conditions but maximum effective depth can vary widely and depends on site and soil conditions. Depth penetration is most commonly limited by moisture and clay/conductive soils.

Electromagnetic Pipe and Cable Locator. Detects electromagnetic fields. Used to actively trace conductive pipes and tracer wires, or passively detect power and radio signals traveling along conductive pipes and utilities.

Work Performed

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems performed the following work on this project:

Saw Cutting The scope of work included scanning an area where concrete saw cutting is to take place. The area was searched for any potential obstructions to cutting, including conduits, shallow utilities immediately beneath the slab, and structural items like grade beams and foundations. Typically, scanning will extend to several inches beneath the slab and at least one foot around the marked borders of the area to account for overcuts unless otherwise noted. Please note that scans cannot be collected within 1.5"-4" of surface obstructions depending on the type of antenna being used.

The slab was found to be approximately 12 inches thick.

We understand the scope to be the clearing of approximately 50x4ft area prior to saw cutting.

The effective depth of GPR will vary throughout a site depending on a variety of conditions such as roofing material, moisture content, amount of reinforcing steel, etc. At this site, the maximum effective GPR depth was approximately 12 inches.

Identified unknown conduits at 2-3 inches intersecting the scan area. Marked with blue tape.
