About this file
This fact sheet describes the CO2MUNITARIO carbon capture project in Mexico. The project aims to build capacity for forest owner and local communities to develop integrated projects that generate income through market mechanisms. It seeks to maintain and increase forest carbon stocks, strengthen local economies, improve forest governance, and support policies to facilitate a regulated carbon market in Mexico.
The projects are verified under the Climate Action Reserve Forest Protocol for Mexico standard. Benefits include providing the only such project in Mexico to successfully develop forestry offset projects and sell credits internationally. The projects generate measurable benefits like improved landscapes, livelihoods, and governance for participating communities. They adhere to international standards and are independently audited to ensure additionality, ownership and environmental benefits. The emissions trading system allows communities to diversify incomes while promoting natural resource stewardship.

Text version
In 2019, Pronatura México, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the World Resources Institute México (WRI) designed the largest carbon capture project in Mexico.
Its objective is to create the technical, institutional, financial and political capacities to increase the value of Mexican forests using market mechanisms, which was named CO2MUNITARIO.
CO2MUNITARIO is building capacity within forest owners and local organisations communities so that they will be able to develop integrated projects that generate additional income through increased access to market mechanisms. In parallel, the project supports the creation of public policy, norms, laws, protocols and institutions to facilitate the creation and implementation of the developing regulated market in Mexico for forestry offsets.
OUR GOALS
* Achieve the maintenance and increase of forests as carbon stocks and as natural landscapes.
* Create new forms of subsistence and strengthen the local economy of forest communities, mainly indigenous.
* Improve local forest governance schemes in forest communities and ejidos for the generation and sale of carbon credits.
* Contribute to achieving the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
* Support in the creation of public policy, norms, laws, protocols and institutions that can facilitate the creation and implementation of a regulated carbon market in Mexico.
VERIFICATION STANDARD
The CO2MUNITARIO projects are carried out under the standard of the Forest Protocol for Mexico (PFM) of the Climate Action Reserve (CAR); this body is internationally recognized. The PFM provides standard guidance for carbon sequestration projects and addresses eligibility, baseline, inventory, permanence, social and environmental safeguards, and measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) requirements. The projects are periodically audited by a Verifying Body (VO) before each sale of credits (CRT's).

BENEFITS
1. It is the only project of this nature in Mexico that has achieved the successful development of carbon capture forestry projects. It has also placed its compensation in the international market, influencing the economic development of the communities through the generation of jobs and the income of economic resources in Mexican forest communities with a high index of marginalization.
2. The projects generate measurable benefits that improve the communities' landscapes, their quality of life and governance mechanisms.
3. The projects adhere to internationally recognized standards such as the Forest Protocol for Mexico and the
Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCB). This ensures that projects generate robust and reliable greenhouse gas reductions and generate positive net benefits to local communities and biodiversity.
4. The projects are regularly audited by independent third party organizations to guarantee the additionality, ownership and environmental benefit of the projects.
5. The Emissions Trading System1 allows communities to diversify their productive activities and promote the care of their natural resources.
OUR ACHIEVEMENTS
* The beneficiaries are the forest owners of each project (ejidatarios o comuneros), who receive in an equitable and consensual manner the payment for the economic resources obtained, they are also directly benefited with temporary jobs and with the ecosystem services of their natural resources.
1 An emissions trading system is a market-based instrument designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GEI)
