About this file

This document provides an overview of the Alliance for Sustainable Landscapes and Markets activity in Mexico. The activity integrates communities, producers, markets, and consumers across four Mexican states to strengthen sustainable forestry and agriculture. It works to improve production practices and access to markets for small producers, reduce deforestation across 500,000 hectares, build resilience, and develop sustainable supply chains. The activity supports numerous cooperatives and organizations across Chiapas, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, and Mexico that collectively manage over 300,000 hectares of land and have trained over 3,000 producers in climate-smart agriculture and forest management. Outcomes include increased certification, reduced emissions, strengthened brands and sales, and engaged partners across sectors.

The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the US Agency for International Development Mexico titled "Southern Mexico - Generating Employment and Sustainability (SURGES)." The purpose is to strengthen market systems in southern Mexico to increase investment, employment, and sales in sustainable production and natural ecosystems through the activity.

The Alliance for Sustainable Landscapes and Markets integrates communities, producers, markets, and consumers to make impactful changes that attend to our most urgent environmental and social issues.

We work to strengthen sustainable forestry and agricultural activities and the rentability of their products, in collaboration with Mexican partners from four states in the country. Our alliance integrates communities, producers, markets, and consumers to make impactful changes that attend to the urgent environmental and social issues in the rainforests of Mexico.

WHAT WE DO IN THE ALLIANCE

* We strengthen sustainable farming and forestland management with an integral landscape vision.

* We increase the profitability and the competitiveness of community led sustainable farm and forestry businesses.

* We grow partnerships with the public and private sector for sustainable sourcing.

* We work in the training of forestry management and entrepreneurial capacities with the communities, promoting the inclusion of women and young generations in the value chains.

OUR GOALS

* The improvement of production practices, commercial capacities, and the access to the global market of small producers.

* The reduction of deforestation in at least half a million hectares of forestry land with sustainable farm management.

* The development of capacities to sustainably harvest new forestry products that don’t come from wood, and to increase resilience and productivity of producers in their landscapes.

USAID.GOV ALLIANCE FOR SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPES ANDMARKETS

* The generation of a strong call to action to the public for responsible purchasing decisions.

* The development of more sustainable supply chains in the private sector.

WHERE AND WITH WHO

CHIAPAS

FUNDACIÓN GIGANTE, TOKS, PRODUCTORES ORGÁNICOS DEL TACANÁ AND PRODUCTORES DE CACAO SOSTENIBLE RAYEN

Through the alliance with Fundacion Gigante and Toks restaurant chain, the Activity works closely with Productores Orgánicos del Tacaná, a cooperative of more than 150 small coffee producers working to produce quality coffee, protect their forests and improve the well-being of their communities. Their coffee is produced by coffee growers from 13 communities, most of them of the Mame ethnic group, within the Volcán de Tacaná Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas, a protected natural area of great environmental and cultural importance on the border of Mexico and Guatemala. To date, Toks maintains a commercial relationship with Productores Organicos del Tacana, buying their coffee which is served in all Toks restaurants. In addition, this alliance also supports the Productores de Cacao Sostenible Rayen cooperative, integrated by 27 Mexican cocoa producers who sustainably manage an area of 57 hectares in the Soconusco region, Chiapas. Cocoa and coffee producers participate in capacity building activities focused on climate-smart agriculture, business management, communication, leadership promoting a better access to markets.

In collaboration with Olam, the Activity supports the cooperative Oro Verde, through specialized training strategies to boost resilience and productivity of coffee producers by implementing climate-smart agriculture practices along with restoration efforts to recover degraded lands, through reforestation actions. The Activity focuses on strengthening their community-based forest enterprises, by assisting the development and implementation of strategic planning. In addition, in alliance with other Non-Profit Organizations and state government initiatives, it promotes the establishment of commercial relations with the main stakeholders in the region. In addition, it supports the continuity of the regional Learning Community of Sustainable Forest Management by promoting better forest management and business practices, with special focus on young participants.

It focuses on the entire coffee value chain, from the production to the direct commercialization of the coffee produced by its members, including the services inherent to the activity such as obtaining and managing credits and technical assistance. In addition to the impulse to supply projects, the full participation of rural women is encouraged as well as indigenous rights. Climate smart agriculture practices are promoted between producers to strengthen resiliency and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, along with landscape restoration practices such as reforestation with native species in areas where deforestation and degradation processes have been identified.
