INTERVAL: MC = 13%.

All depths are in feet and are measured from the ground surface and are the same as those reported by the driller.

PURPOSE OF HOLE:

To determine the engineering properties and lateral continuity of the stratigraphic units present in the embankment and foundation of Kachess Dam and to install piezometers for monitoring.

DRILL SETUP:

The drill was set up on a pad consisting of dumped fill just upstream of the crest of the dam at Station 11+20, 45 ' upstream of the centerline of the dam.

DRILLER:

Benny Horton

DRILLING EQUIPMENT:

Truck-mounted Foremost DR12 (Model Number DR 7/24P-40/12-950, Serial Number 002135, dual rotary drill with Mission Magnum I mud pump, Bean loading pump, Atlas Copco 900 cfm/350 psi air compressor, and a Miller Bobcat 225 NT welder.

DRILLING METHODS:

0.0-20.0': Advanced hole with 11-1/4-inch air-actuated downhole hammer while rotating 12-inch steel casing. Lifted cuttings with compressed air.

20.0-21.5': Installed and advanced hole with 6-1/4-inch I. D., 9-inch O. D.

hollow-stem flight-augers.

20.0-24.0': Advanced 12-inch steel casing and downhole hammer to 24.0'.

24.0-66.4': Advanced hole with 6-1/4-inch I. D., 9-inch O. D. hollow-stem flight-augers. Collected samples while advancing the hole with a 6-inch diameter, 5-foot-long split-tube sample barrel nested insided the augers.

Resumed work on November 27, 2001 after drill pad was repaired.

Removed hollow-stem flight-augers. Installed 8-inch

Samples were logged in the field using Designation USBR 5005-86, "Procedures for Determining Unified Soil Classification (Visual Method)"; laboratory classifications have been prepared using Designation USBR 5000-86, "Procedures for Determining Unified Soil Classification (Laboratory Method)".

Graphics column represents visual classification of soils and/or interpretations based on cuttings return and drilling conditions.

Center column descriptors are defined in the Reclamation Engineering Geology Field Mnual, Volume 1, Second Edition, 1998.

The drill was set up on a pad consisting of dumped fill just upstream of the crest of the dam at Station 11+20, 20 ' upstream of the centerline of the dam.

DRILLER:

Benny Horton

DRILLING EQUIPMENT:

Truck-mounted Foremost DR12 (Model Number DR 7/24P-40/12-950, Serial Number 002135, dual rotary drill with Mission Magnum I mud pump, Bean loading pump, Atlas Copco 900 cfm/350 psi air compressor, and a Miller Bobcat 225 NT welder.

DRILLING METHODS:

0.0-13.0': Advanced hole with 11-1/4-inch air-actuated downhole hammer while rotating 12-inch steel casing. Lifted cuttings with compressed air.

13.0-37.0': Installed 8-inch steel casing. Advanced hole by rotating casing and cleaning out with 7-3/8-inch rockbit. Lifted cuttings with water. Collected 3.75-inch I.

D. split-tube drive-samples.

37.0-59.0': Advanced hole by rotating casing and cleaning out with 7-3/8-inch rockbit. Lifted cuttings with water and a biodegradable mud additive. Collected 3.75-inch I. D. split-tube drive-samples. Casing stalled at 58.5' on a boulder.

59.0-60.1': Removed rockbit and installed 7-5/8-inch downhole hammer.

Advanced hole to 60.1' using the downhole hammer.

Cs = Casing Sz = Size I. D. = Inside Diameter O. D. = Outside Diameter SPG = Specific Graity LL = Liquid Limit PI = Plasticity Index Cu = Coefficient of Uniformity Cc = Coefficient of Curvature

The Hole Completion center column represents the installation of the 1-inch I. D.

PVC slotted pipe and does not show the locations of vibrating wire piezometers which were later installed inside that PVC. Refer to the Hole Completion section of the narrative in the left column (Notes) for a description of the installation of the vibrating wires.
