1 INTRODUCTION

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) is in the process of installing a Helium Recovery

System at Industrial Buildings Complex. We are adding a new piping system to recover helium from

Industrial Building 3 Addition (IB3a) to Industrial Building 1 Addition (IB1a) purifier compressor suction.

Tests conducted at IB3a consume large amounts of helium every year, which is currently being released into the atmosphere. Piping routed on the roofs of IB3a, IB3, ICBa, ICB and the Midway

Building will deliver the helium to the nearest purification system. Overview of designed piping is presented on Fig 1. The piping will begin in place where the piping from previous helium recovery effort started, behind the vacuum pump shed. The pipe will be connected to the existing system in the exterior of the IB1a building.

In the documentation below, DEVICE will refer to this piping system. This document provides technical description for fabrication and installation of the new helium recovery piping. This document describes how the new piping interfaces to existing piping. Interfaces of SUBCONTRACTOR’s scope of work are indicated on Fig 2. and Fig 4. Location of buildings is illustrated on Fig. 3.
