Homer Housing Electrical Disconnects

1/27/2014

1-SUMMARY OF WORK

1.1 SCOPE

1.1.1 The scope of this project includes providing all materials, labor, and transportation for installing electrical building disconnects, emergency lighting, cold storage shed lighting, and for correcting exterior wiring deficiencies as described in these specifications. This work is located at the U. S. Coast Guard property on White Alder Ct. in Homer, Alaska.

1.2 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

1.2.1 Install building disconnects

A. Buildings 1, 2, 3, and 5 do not have building electrical disconnects outside of the buildings. Contractor shall furnish and install new disconnects at these buildings. See drawing E-1 for locations.

B. Locate existing underground electrical conductors where they enter the building. See drawing E-1 for typical locations. Dig a trench to uncover the conductors and continue the trench to the location of the new disconnect on the building. Uncover the conductors back to where they emerge from under the concrete sidewalk. There may be existing splices in the conductors that need to be found and exposed.

C. Furnish and install a handhole along the existing conductor run. Cut the conductors and splice in new conductors to run to the new disconnect and back. New conductors to be the same size and insulation as existing. Splices shall be rated for direct bury and submursion, and shall be located in the new handhole. If there is an existing splice in the line, cut the conductors such that the existing splice is removed. The intent is to minimize the number of splices in the line.

D. Install buried cable warning tape above the buried conductors.

E. Restore site to previous condition: fill hole, plant grass.

1.2.2 Install emergency lighting in entryway

A. Furnish and install new emergency lighting in the entryways of buildings 1-5.

B. New emergency lights are to be provided with 120V power. This power shall be provided by extending the existing circuit in the entryway to the location of the new emergency light.

C. Each entryway is slightly different, thus the location of the new emergency lights will vary in each building, based on access to the existing circuit to provide 120V power to the light, available space to mount the light, and appropriate location to provide lighting to the entryway and stairways. Coordinate each location with COR.

1.2.3 Extend branch circuit from the shop to the cold storage shed A. There is a cold storage shed next to the maintenance shop which has no electrical service. There is an outdoor receptacle on the maintenance shop next to the shed.

B. Install a disconnect rated for at least 30A on the shed, immediately inside the front door. Extend the 120V branch circuit from the receptacle outside the shop, underground to the shed disconnect. The circuit shall include power, neutral, and ground.

C. Install (2) 4 foot flourescent lights in the shed, with 3 way switches at both doors. All conductors installed shall be in conduit.

D. Additional ground rods at the shed are not required. Neutral and ground shall not be connected in the shed disconnect; ground wire shall be bonded to disconnect enclosure.

E. The entire installation shall comply with the 2011 NEC.

1.2.4 Correct existing wiring deficiencies

A. Behind building 3 there is a conductor that is not protected by a conduit. A conduit exists coming out of the building and going back into an exterior junction box, but the conduit has been cut away. Reinstall this conductor in a conduit, and mount conduit neatly on the outside of the building.

B. Behind building 5 there is a conductor that is cut off and coiled on the ground. Remove this conductor back to its source and remove the existing conduit that stubs up out of the ground. If the source of the conductor can not be determined, cut off conductor below grade and secure the ends.

C. Remove abandoned light and conductor that is mounted on the back of building 5.
