SAFETY SUMMARY
GENERAL SAFETY NOTICES
The following general safety notices supplement specific warnings and cautions appearing in this manual. General and specific precautions must be understood and applied during the operation and maintenance of equipment covered herein. The Commanding Officer or other authority will issue orders necessary for any situations not covered in these general and specific safety precautions.
DO NOT REPAIR OR ADJUST ALONE
Under no circumstances should repair or adjustment of energized equipment be attempted alone.
The immediate presence of someone capable of rendering aid is required. Before making adjustments, be sure to protect against grounding. If possible, adjustments should be made with one hand, with the other hand free and clear of equipment. Even when power has been removed, dangerous potentials may exist due to retention of charges by capacitors. Circuits must be grounded and all capacitors discharged prior to attempting repairs.
At least two people shall be present at all times while refrigerant is being charged into a refrigeration system. Do not leave the area unattended while charging is in progress.
PRECAUTIONS FOR HANDLING REFRIGERANTS
Be sure ventilation in the space is adequate to keep the concentration of refrigerant below 1000 parts per million. Exhausting air from the space shall be discharged outside the ship. Exhaust intake shall be located near the deck.
If refrigerant is being charged into or being removed from a system, all nonessential persons shall be prohibited from being in or entering the space while refrigerant transfer is taking place.
Emergency self-contained breathing apparatuses shall be located within the space for each person in the space to permit safe evacuation on the event of a large accidental leak. With a large leak, a high concentration of refrigerant vapor may rapidly fill the space and dilute the air (oxygen) in the space. Breathing this diluted, contaminated air can result in rapid (10 to 15 seconds) loss of consciousness.
All hot work in the space shall be suspended before using refrigerants. Never use a torch or attempt repairs on a line containing refrigerant. Exposure to high temperatures causes refrigerant decomposition resulting in highly toxic gases and other harmful compounds.
Chemical safety goggles or a full face shield shall be used while handling refrigerant. If refrigerant accidentally comes in contact with the eyes, seek medical attention immediately. Avoid rubbing or irritating the eyes. First aid should be given immediately. Personnel who experience eye contact with refrigerants should immediately receive a minimum of 15 minutes of eye wash, utilizing potable water only. Following emergency eye wash, the cognizant local medical authority should be consulted regarding follow-up treatment.
Exercise care to be sure that liquid refrigerant does not come in contact with the skin. If liquid refrigerant comes in contact with the skin, the injury should be treated the same as if the skin had been frostbitten or frozen.
Original V
RESUSCITATION
Personnel working with or near high voltage should be familiar with approved resuscitation methods. If someone is injured and stops breathing, initiate resuscitation immediately. A delay could cost the victim’s life.
GENERAL PRECAUTIONS
The following precautions are to be observed at all times:
1. All electrical components associated with equipment shall be installed and grounded in accordance with applicable regulations and approved shipboard practices.
2., Special precautionary measures are essential to prevent applying power to equipment at any time maintenance work is in progress.
3. Do not make any unauthorized alterations to equipment.
4. Before working on electrical equipment, use voltmeter to ensure that system is not energized.
5. All circuits not known to be DEAD must be considered LIVE and dangerous.
6. Do not wear wristwatches, rings, watch chains, metal articles or loose clothing that might accidentally touch live parts or catch and throw some part of the body into contact with live or rotating parts. Clothing and shoes should be as dry as possible.
7. Do remember that some equipment items have more than one source of power. Take time to study the schematics and wiring diagrams and ensure that all power sources are deactivated before working on equipment.

S9516-BH-MMC-010 GENERAL INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION. This manual includes equipment description and installation, operation and maintenance instructions for the York Ship Stores Refrigeration System. The purpose of this system is to provide mechanical refrigeration cooling for the freeze, thaw and chill rooms. Cooling is produced by compressing and condensing gaseous refrigerant into liquid refrigerant and then expanding it into a gas in the unit coolers located in the rooms.
The compressor, motor, condenser and receiver of the plant are factory assembled as a packaged condensing (Marinepak) unit.
Three Marinepaks are furnished, each with a refrigeration producing capacity of 2 tons. The plant is to be supplied with power and water. Basic piping and wiring configurations are shown in figures FO-1 through FO-4.
STORAGE AND PRESERVATION. The equipment should be stored in an enclosed building in an area free of moisture. The Marinepaks are charged with a positive pressure of dry nitrogen prior to shipping. Monitor the pressure in the Marinepaks during the storage period. A positive pressure should always exist in the units in order to prevent air and moisture from entering. Rotate the compressor crankshaft once a month in order to keep the shaft seal and all rotating parts within the compressor lubricated with a film of oil.
WARRANTY. All machinery, equipment, material, supplies, and/or services (“Contract Products”) furnished by Vendor pursuant to this Order, or any part thereof, even though validated for manufacture or installation, shall be guaranteed by Vendor to Buyer and/or the Government, as their interests may appear, to be free of Defects during required tests and for the Guarantee Period. The Guarantee Period, unless otherwise extended pursuant to Article 7.8.8, will expire concurrently with that of the Prime Contract beginning at the time of preliminary acceptance and ending eleven (1 1) months after the preliminary acceptance of each respective Vessel by the Government, but not later than 2/15/99.

INTRODUCTION. The purpose of this section of the manual is to furnish the operator with operational procedures vital to long equipment life and satisfactory unit performance at specified duty requirements. Before operating the unit, the operator should become thoroughly familiar with each unit and its controls.
CAUTION
Under no circumstances shall the unit be placed into operation until refrigerant leak testing has been successfully performed following installation or major repairs to the unit (see Refrigerant Leak Testing - General in the Corrective Maintenance section). Refer to paragraph on Charging and Cleaning the System - General found in the Corrective Mainte-nance section.
CONTROLS. Refer to figure FO-3 for the condensing unit wiring diagram. Refer to figure FO-15 for instrument board configuration. Refer to figure FO-4 for the unit cooler wiring diagram.
PREPARATION FOR STARTING A SYSTEM - GENERAL. Check the following steps before starting either system.
(1) (Initial start only.) Check control settings against table I- 1.
(2) (Initial start only.) Adjust thermal expansion valves to near maximum superheat (see Liquid Control Thermal Expansion Valves in Corrective Maintenance section).
(3) (Initial start only.) Check that system has been charged (see Charging and Cleaning the System - General in Corrective Maintenance section).
(4) (Initial start only.) Check that system is prepared for cleaning (see Charging and Cleaning the System - General in Corrective Maintenance section).
(5) Check the oil level and oil heater operation (see Compressor Oil Level). Oil level (with compressor stopped) should not be below oil sight glass and crankcase should be warm to the touch.
(6) Open the water valves to and from the condenser and fill the tube side with water. Vent the air from the top of each condenser head.
PREPARATION FOR NORMAL SYSTEM STARTUP IN PULLDOWN MODE. In the pulldown mode, Marinepak No. 1 serves the thaw room and freeze room No. 2 while Marinepak No. 2 or No. 3 serves freeze room No. 1 and the chill room. The idle standby Marinepak must be isolated from operating units.
For startup after prolonged shutdown, see Starting Compressor after Prolonged Shutdown.
For startup after emergency or safety shutdown, see Starting System Following Emergency or Safety Shutdown.
NOTE
“Normal system startup” is defined as startup with all of the refrigerant stored in the receiver, the receiver inlet and outlet valves closed, and the system pumped down (i.e.: the compressor was stopped under control of the LP switch before the STOP button was pressed).
(1) Observe general preparation procedures above.
(2) Referring to figures FO- 1 and FO-2, adjust system valves in accordance with the operating position called for in table 2-l except do not open the receiver outlet valve. --
