About this file

This document is a technical reference guide for calculating paper costs for web press printing operations, specifically for 3HW and 3CW press configurations. The document does not identify any specific states, agencies, consortiums, or jurisdictions, but appears to be an internal operational guide for a printing company or service provider that works with magazine-format publications.

The document outlines the methodology for calculating paper requirements and costs for web press printing, using 80# Gloss Coated White "West Linn Nature Plus 10% Recycled" paper as the primary example. Key pricing specifications include paper startup costs of 1,040 lbs per signature (16 pages), paper run costs of 156 lbs per signature per thousand copies, and a rate of $52.21 per hundredweight (CWT). The guide provides detailed calculations for various scenarios including 16-page, 24-page, and 48-page self-cover booklets, with specific cost examples ranging from $2,171.94 for a 16-page/20,000-copy job to $6,515.81 for a 48-page equivalent. The document notes that half-signatures are permissible but quarter or three-quarter signatures are not, and establishes that an 8-page tabloid format equals a 16-page magazine for calculation purposes. Different paper stocks have varying startup costs, run rates, and CWT pricing structures.

How to figure paper for a Web Press (i.e. 3HW and 3CW)

Based on a magazine: (8-3/8” x 10-7/8”) Using 80# Gloss Coated White “West Linn. Nature Plus 10% Recycled” as an example:

Paper startup is 1,040 lbs. per signature 1 signature is 16 pages.

If you have more than 16 pages multiply the paper startup number by the number of signatures you have (32 pages = 2 signatures, 48 pages = 3 signatures, 64 pages = 4 signatures, etc.)

**NOTE: You can use 1/2 signatures but you cannot use 1/4 or 3/4 signatures. If you find this happens, you will then need to increase the number of pages for your booklet.

Paper run is 156 lbs. per signature multiplied by the per thousand quantity.

In the case of a 16 page self-cover and ordering 20,000 copies the calculation would look like this:

1,040 (paper startup) + 156 (paper run/M) x 20 (quantity/1,000) = 4,160 lbs. of paper The cost for this much paper is calculated like this:

$52.21/Hundred Weight

4,160 lbs. x $.5221 ($52.21/100) = $2,171.94

If the booklet had been a 48 page self-cover the calculation would look like this:

48 pages divided by 16 pages per signature = 3 signatures 1,040 (paper startup per signature) x 3 (signatures) = 3,120 lbs. paper startup 156 (paper run/M) x 3 (signatures) x 20 (quantity/1,000) = 9,360 lbs. paper run/M 3,120 lbs. (paper startup) + 9,360 (paper run/M) = 12,480 lbs. of paper for this job.

The cost is:

12,480 lbs. x $.5221 ($52.21/100) = $6,515.81

A 24 page self-cover booklet calculation looks like this:

24 pages divided by 16 pages per signature = 1.5 signatures 1,040 (paper startup per signature) x 1.5 (signatures) = 1,560 lbs. paper startup 156 (paper run/M) x 1.5 (signatures) x 20 (quantity/1,000) = 4,680 lbs. paper run/M 1,560 lbs. (paper startup) + 4,680 (paper run/M) = 6,240 lbs. of paper for this job.

The cost is:

6,240 lbs. x $.5221 ($52.21/100) = $3,257.90

The formula is the same for the other paper stocks that are available. There are different paper startups and paper runs/M numbers for each of the papers. Each paper has its own CWT price.

**When figuring stock for a tabloid - an 8 page tabloid is the same as a 16 page magazine.
