Bridge 164 Rehabilitation Project Summary
This document is a final design plan set prepared by Clark Dietz, Inc. for the Hamilton County Highway Department in Indiana for the rehabilitation of Bridge 164 (Hamilton County Bridge No. 164), a three-span prestressed concrete adjacent box beam structure carrying Cumberland Road over Mud Creek in Delaware Township. The project, designated PB-25-0825, involves the preservation and rehabilitation of the existing 96-foot-4-inch long bridge with a 30-foot minimum clear roadway width built in 1975 and previously rehabilitated in 2011. The design includes replacement of the superstructure while maintaining the existing concrete bent and pier foundations with steel pipe piles. The bridge accommodates an Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) of 30,640 vehicles in 2020, projected to increase to 56,685 by 2040, with a design speed of 35 miles per hour and a functional classification of minor arterial on a 3.15 percent grade. The project plans detail maintenance of traffic in two construction phases, with a reduced design speed of 25 miles per hour in the work zone, phased lane closures utilizing traffic control devices, and flagger stations to manage the single-lane traffic flow during rehabilitation.
The design plans specify concrete work including patching of spalled concrete with exposed rebar, pile cleaning and epoxy recoating at Piers 2 and 3, installation of 16.2 tons of riprap revetment at four corners with 1-foot-6-inch depth and upstream/downstream pier protection extending 15 feet in length, flowable backfill under the reinforced concrete bridge approach, and application of PCC epoxy sealer/healer to exposed bridge deck and coping surfaces. The structure is designed for HS20-44 loading per 2002 AASHO Standard Specifications with concrete strength specifications ranging from 3,000 to 4,000 psi for various structural elements and 60,000 psi reinforcing steel. The construction area limits extend 150 feet along the roadway with grading and aggregate base preparation, and hydraulic design accommodates a 100-year flood event (Q100) with an elevation of 784.03 feet and a design discharge of 3,750 cubic feet per second. The design engineer of record is Robert D. Chandler, II (PE10504698), with plans certified on October 27, 2025.
