RFQ H92240‐20‐Q‐1007
Skid Mount Portable Tower
Q&A Set 2
19 June 2020
Q1: Payload: Understand the payload planning weight is 250 lbs. Do you know the sail area of the payload? Given the weight and sail area we can determine the wind speed at which the tower requires ground wires.
A1: Current payload is approximately 50‐60 lbs. weather station, windsock, solar panel, and beacon. The windsock attaches at the very top along with the beacon. The solar panel is approximately 2’x 2’ and is fastened against the tower about ten feet from the top. The weather station mounts to the side of the tower and sticks out about 7‐10”. The 250 lb payload is for future growth.
Q2: Container: Is it acceptable for the tower to be the size of and designed to be shipped as an ISO container instead of in an ISO container?
A2: It does not have to fit in a container. It can be sized like a container as long as it can be strapped down to a trailer for transportation.
Q3: Power: 110VAC, 60 Hz: What does this mean?
a. Is it power that is provided to the tower (shore power) that is used to raise and lower the tower?
b. Is it power that you need the system to provide for the equipment at the top of the tower?
A3: 110V/60Hz is what the tower has to be operated off of. We do not have the capability of 220V. We have no power requirements for the top of the tower. Everything is solar powered.
Q4: Power: What is the primary source of power for the system? Do we need to provide generator as the prime source of power with shore power backup? If the primary is shore power, is that 110VAC, 60 Hz or something else?
a. If generator is primary source of power, what is run time required for the system between refueling?
b. Is a power circuit required to the top of the tower for the equipment (IR light/weather station) and if so, is one 120V/20A circuit acceptable? Is an FAA light required?
A4: Power for operation needs to be 110/60Hz. We will be utilizing a mobile generator. The tower will be extended and stay up for most the year only to be brought down for maintenance on payload and tower. No power is needed at the top of the tower or for payload. All payloads are solar powered. FAA lighting is not required. The Government already has FAA lighting for tower that is solar powered.
Q5: Cables: What cables are required at the top of the tower and type?
a. Assume a power cable for the IR light and the weather station
b. Is there a signal cable to/from the weather station and if so, type of cable?
c. Any other cables to the top of the tower?
A5: No cables are used or required for the payload. All are solar powered and use wireless transmission.
