GEOTECHNICAL DATA REPORT

1 SCOPE

The information provided in this section encompasses the geotechnical field investigations available for this project. The investigations consist of core borings, vibracores, and surficial sediment samples. The associated boring logs and laboratory data are presented in paragraphs

4.6 and 4.7, respectively. A character of materials paragraph is included to provide a comprehensive description of the materials utilizing both recent and historical knowledge of the project area. Also included in this section are definitions of terms and boring log notes, which provide additional explanation of the boring logs and drilling techniques.

Items discussed in the character of materials paragraph may not appear explicitly on the boring logs. Based on historic knowledge of the project area, the character of materials paragraph includes items that supplement the data documented by the boring logs. When reviewing the boring logs, use all of the data on the logs, including the materials description, legend, and blow counts. When evaluating the subsurface conditions, use all of the data, including the character of materials paragraph and boring logs.

During the solicitation period, any questions that pertain to the information provided in this section should be addressed to the contract specialist identified in Block 9 of SF1442. After contract award, questions should be addressed to the appointed ACO/COR, which will coordinate with Geosystems Branch.

2 CHARACTER OF MATERIALS

2.1 REGIONAL/LOCAL GEOLOGY

The surficial geologic deposits of southeastern Florida primarily include the Miami Limestone, the Key Largo Limestone, the Anastasia Formation, and the Tertiary-Quaternary Shell Units, which include the sediments of the Fort Thompson Formation. The Miami and Key Largo Limestones, as well as the coquina of the Anastasia Formation, were primarily deposited in shallow, tropical Pleistocene seas. The Tertiary-Quaternary Shell Units, ranging from late Pliocene to Pleistocene in age, includes the fossiliferous, sandy limestone and shell units formerly attributed to the Fort Thompson Formation in the project area. A thin layer of unconsolidated, fine quartz sands with organics, previously referred to as the Pamlico Sands, overlies the Miami Limestone in the project area. The project location and the surrounding area are shown on the vicinity map (see Plate 1).

The Miami Limestone is the uppermost geologic unit along the southeastern Florida coast with surface outcrops extending from southeastern Palm Beach County across Broward and Miami- Dade Counties to the south and into Monroe and Collier Counties to the west. The Miami Limestone, generally white to yellow or brown in color and approximately 40 feet thick along the southeastern coast, thins to the west beneath the Everglades. The Miami Limestone includes two facies: a cross-stratified, oolitic grainstone prevalent in the eastern portion of the outcrop area; and a bryzoan peloidal packstone to grainstone in the western portion of the unit. Vertical solution holes and channels are prevalent in the Miami Limestone. The solution holes are sometimes filled with quartz sand and/or shell material.

The Miami Limestone overlies and interfingers with the Anastasia Formation in eastern Broward County along the coast. The Anastasia Formation extends northward, primarily along the coast, to St. Johns County in north Florida. To the west, the Miami Limestone overlies and may interfinger with the Tertiary-Quaternary Shell Units (undifferentiated shell units).

Port Everglades Harbor Maintenance Dredging 42-Foot Project

SECTION 00 31 32 - 3

The light gray to light brown, interbedded, sandy molluscan coquina and shelly quartz sands of the Anastasia Formation are poorly indurated, representing a high energy surf, barrier island coastal deposit. The Anastasia Formation attains thicknesses of up to 100 feet thick in the project vicinity.

U.S. Geological Survey mapping indicates that the Key Largo Limestone, a massive, moderately to well indurated reef boundstone (coral reef facies), is interfingered with the Anastasia Formation in the project area.

2.2 MATERIALS ENCOUNTERED

New materials shoaled into the dredge areas are described in the following sections. Elevations of the newly deposited materials are shown on the channel survey.

Materials expected to be encountered include fine sand (SP), sand with silt (SP-SM), silty sand (SM), and silt (MH and ML), with varying amounts of sand to gravel size shell. Limestone and sandstone fragments, resulting from previous deepening activities and erosion from side slopes, are also present within the materials. The rock ranges from sand size up to boulder size material.

Trash and debris have been encountered during previous maintenance dredging events and are present within the materials to be dredged. Isolated areas containing clay (CL) materials and peat (PT) may be encountered.

Any in-situ rock, if encountered, is not required to be dredged. Plates 2 – 5 include the site plan and core boring, vibracore, and surficial sediment sample locations.

2.2.1 Outer Entrance Channel and Inner Entrance Channel

The materials in the Outer Entrance Channel (OEC) and Inner Entrance Channel (IEC) primarily consist of fine to medium grained sand (SP) and sand with silt (SP-SM). All materials encountered contain various amounts of sand to gravel sized shell. Limestone and sandstone fragments, ranging from sand size up to boulder size material, are present within the dredge materials. Plate 2 includes the vibracore and core boring locations within the OEC and IEC areas.

2.2.2 North Turning Basin, Main Turning Basin, South Turning Basin and adjacent Berthing Areas

The materials to be excavated within the North Turning Basin, Main Turning Basin, South Turning Basin, and the adjacent berthing areas consist primarily of poorly graded sand (SP), sand with silt (SP-SM), silty sand (SM), silts with various plasticity (ML/MH), and sandy silts. All materials encountered contain various amounts of sand to gravel sized shell. Limestone and sandstone fragments, ranging from sand size up to boulder size material, are present within the dredge materials. Plate 3 includes the vibracore, core boring, and surficial sediment sample locations within the listed areas.

2.2.3 South Access Channel and Turning Notch

The materials to be excavated within the South Access Channel (SAC) and the Turning Notch primarily consist of silty sand (SM), and inorganic and organic silt with varying plasticity and variable amounts of sand (MH/OH/ML). All materials encountered contain various amounts of sand to gravel sized shell. Limestone and sandstone fragments, ranging from sand size up to boulder size material, are present within the dredge materials. Plate 4 includes the surficial sediment sample locations within the SAC-North area. Plate 5 includes the vibracore, core boring, and surficial sediment sample locations for the Turning Notch and SAC-South areas.

4.4 BORING LOG NOTES

Borings CB-PEH15-14, 17, 20, 23, 28, 30, 42, 43, 56, 59, and 82 were driven using the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) procedure with a 140 pound hammer with a 30-inch drop using a 2.0 foot split spoon (1 3/8-inch I.D. and 2-inch O.D.). Borings were advanced in 18-inch intervals, or until refusal was encountered. Refusal is defined as a total of 50 blows of the hammer within any 6-inch increment, a total of 100 blows within any 1-foot increment, or no observed advance of the sampler after 10 successive blows of the hammer. When refusal was encountered, the borings were continued with a 4-inch by 5 1/2-inch diameter core barrel until the rate of penetration indicated softer material, at which point the SPT procedure was resumed.

Borings VB-PEH18-01 through VB-PEH18-03 were sampled using an Alpine style, pneumatic vertical hammer, vibracore drilling apparatus having a continuous 20-foot by 3 or 3 1/2-inch core barrel with clear plastic core liner until refusal was encountered. Refusal is defined as no additional penetration of the vibracore with two minutes of additional effort applied to penetrate through the resistant layer at maximum vibration. The vibracore apparatus is equipped with a graph-type depth of penetration recorder.

Surficial Samples SS‐PEH18‐1 through SS‐PEH18‐17 were collected with an AMS 6”x6”x6” clam shell sampler which weighs approximately 25 pounds. The sampler was tied to nylon rope and

SECTION 00 31 32 - 17

4.6 BORING LOGS

Applicable boring logs are presented on the following pages.

The borings represented in this section are available historic borings within the project area.

Some of the materials within the project template presented on the boring logs have been removed by previous dredging events with subsequent shoaling of similar materials. The current elevations of the materials at these locations are shown on the contract drawings.

While the Government’s borings are representative of subsurface conditions at their respective locations and vertical reaches, local variations in the characteristics of the subsurface materials of this region are to be expected. Accordingly, prospective offerors shall form their own conclusions from the examination of the recovered materials prior to submission of their offer.
