About this file
This document is a culvert inspection report for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) focusing on the Framingham/Worcester Line culvert over Big Bummet Brook in Grafton, Massachusetts. The inspection was conducted on June 24, 2024, by WSP under Contract No. B92PS49, Task Order No. 2, and provides a comprehensive assessment of a three-barrel stone masonry box culvert constructed circa 1840. The report includes detailed findings on the culvert's structural condition, identifying several major deficiencies such as transverse cracks in granite masonry blocks, missing mortar in masonry joints, spalled concrete in the roof slab and headwall, and debris accumulation in Barrel 2 that is impeding brook flow.
The report recommends a series of repairs estimated at $204,000, to be programmed within the MBTA's Bridge Management Program over the next two years. Recommended repairs include repointing masonry joints, repairing cracked roof blocks, addressing concrete scaling and spalling, removing debris and vegetation, and maintaining the track retaining wall. The inspection notes no critical structural or hazard deficiencies but highlights the need for monitoring ongoing deterioration, including stone settlement, embankment erosion, and tie condition. The culvert carries two tracks with continuous welded rail and timber ties on ballast over soil fill, and the inspection was performed using visual and tactile methods, with underwater inspection support from Keolis Consultants.

INSPECTION FINDINGS / RECOMMENDATIONS
DPIC:______DIVER:______DIVER:______ENGINEER:______NOTES:______
GENERAL
GRAFTON 37.59 -- -- -- APR. 18, 2023
The inspection findings are based on an underwater inspection performed on April 18, 2023 of the culvert carrying the Worcester Line over Big Bummet Brook in North Grafton, MA. The walls of the culvert were labeled East - West and in reference to the rail orientation with Boston being East. The river flowed North to South with a low current of 1 knot. The three barrel culvert consisted of stacked granite blocks at the North end and Concrete at the south. The scope of the inspection involved visual and tactile inspection of bridge and channel components below the High Water Mark (HWM) which was 1' above the waterline. The item numbers refer to the MBTA Underwater Operation Team, Divers Activity Report on Page 5. The culvert was not entered due to its size and blocked barrels.
SD TAMS MS
ITEM NO.61 CHANNEL & CHANNEL PROTECTION
61.1 (Channel Scour): The channel scour was overall satisfactory condition. A scour pocket 1' deeper than the surrounding area was noted at the East corner of the wingwall and headwall of the downstream end of the culvert.
61.2 (Embankment Erosion): The embankment erosion was overall good condition. Minimal embankment erosion was noted at the upstream and downstream ends.
61.3 (Drift): The drift was overall poor condition. Timber buildup was found in every barrel that impeded the flow of the brook. The middle barrel was completely filled to the roof but water was still flowing through the debris. Timber drift was also noted upstream and downstream of the bridge that spanned across the waterway.
61.4 (Vegetation): The vegetation was overall good condition. It was comprised of small bushes and trees that lined the embankments.
61.7 (Aggradation): The aggradation was overall satisfactory condition. Soil aggradation was noted below the middle barrel at the downstream end of the culvert. Additionally, a pile of gravel was noted along the East embankment that spilled into the waterway. Gravel and sand aggradation was noted at the upstream end of the culvert spanning from the middle barrel to the South embankment.
ITEM NO.62 CULVERTS
62.2 (Floor): The floor was overall in satisfactory condition. A 2' long x 0.3' high x 2.6' deep spall was noted on the concrete floor of the South barrel at the downstream end.
62.3 (Walls): The walls were overall in satisfactory condition. Minor surface scaling below the waterline was noted on the concrete sections at the downstream end.
INSPECTION FINDINGS / RECOMMENDATIONS
DPIC:______DIVER:______DIVER:______ENGINEER:______NOTES:______
GRAFTON 37.59 -- -- -- APR. 18, 2023
62.4 (Headwall): The headwalls were overall in fair condition. Multiple portions of the South headwall had concrete spalling up to 0.7' deep in the areas below, above, and between the barrels. The portions above the barrels that had 0.7' deep spalling also had rebar exposed, see Photo 006. No defects were noted on the upstream granite block headwalls.
62.5 (Wingwall): The wingwalls were overall in satisfactory condition. A 0.3' deep spall was located on the West downstream wingwall at the waterline which wrapped around the West and South face, see Photo
005. A similar 0.6' deep spall was found on the East downstream wingwall that wrapped around the West and South face, see Photo 009. A 2.7' long x 0.5' high x 1' deep spall was located on the bottom step of the East downstream wingwall along with a 1' long x 1' high x 0.3' deep spall on the top step.
62.8 (Embankment): The embankments were overall in satisfactory condition. Minor amounts of erosion was noted on the slope above the downstream embankment.
62.13 (Member Alignment): The member alignment was overall in satisfactory condition. Minor stone misalignment was noted in the East barrel approximately 20' from the upstream entrance, see Photo 010.
62.14 (Deformation): The deformation was overall in good condition. No deformation was found during the inspection.
62.15 (Scour): The scour was overall in satisfactory condition. A scour pocket 1' deeper than the surrounding area was noted at the East corner of the wingwall and headwall of the downstream end of the culvert.
62.16 (Settlement): The settlement was overall in satisfactory condition. Minor amounts of stone settlement was noted in the granite block portions of the culvert.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Perform regularly scheduled underwater inspections of bridge and remove debris in the culvert barrels. No structural repairs are recommended.
