About this file
This file contains a compilation of asbestos survey and testing documents for Building 402 at Kirtland Air Force Base. Multiple laboratory analysis reports from Sun City Analytical Inc. and Environmental Management Division documents detail asbestos testing results from 1991-1996. Key findings include:
Asbestos testing was conducted on various building materials including paint textures, wall samples, and exterior surfaces. Most interior samples tested negative for asbestos-containing materials (ACM). However, six exterior paint texture samples tested positive for 1-3% chrysotile asbestos, with one sample testing positive for 3-5% chrysotile asbestos. The Environmental Management Division noted minimal to no risk of asbestos exposure, as the only positive tested ACM was on the building's exterior. Inspections were performed by officials including David W. Pepper, an Asbestos Inspector, who conducted a comprehensive survey of the building's interior and exterior components.

MEMO FOR RECORD
A full survey and visual inspection was performed on 29 March 1995 on Building 402, the building had gone through a survey before, but was not indicated as a full survey. The building serves as a large computer room with a raised floor. Under the false floor were pipes, a few were wrapped with fiberglass insulation only. The actual base of the floor was all cement. The ceiling was a drop ceiling, no insulation of any type was above the drop ceiling or heating ducts, due to the cool temperature required for the computers. The walls were vinyl covered sheetrock, earlier samples on the entire building all were negative for asbestos containing building material (ACBM). The only sample taken was the mastic and tile material holding wall and ceiling tiles in the electric room, that sample tested negative for ACBM.
On 12 April 1995, ten samples were taken of the outside paint texture, which was painted over cinderblock, the outside of the building was in very good shape. Six of the samples tested positive for 1 - 3% chrysotile asbestos, and one tested positive for 3 - 5% chrysotile asbestos.
Since the only positive tested ACBM is on the outside of the building, there is minimal to no risk in asbestos exposure.
