This appendix covers all equipment, materials, and labor necessary to complete installation of the system.

APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

Applicable documents shall be in accordance with Section 2 of the cover PD.

REQUIREMENTS

System description The mechanical-assist, mobile storage system shall be utilized to store pilferable hand liftable items. Property will be manually picked using mobile ladder stands. The system shall be installed according to Air Force Drawings ATY0B9-01 and shall consist of the following components:

a. Carriages, including drive trains

b. Stationary platforms

c. Shelving units

d. Controls

e. Rails

f. Elevated flooring

g. Ramps

h. Safety devices

i. Mechanical fasteners, anchors, and all other items required to install the mobile storage system.

j. Manually propelled, mobile ladder stand.

Performance and physical characteristics System operation Each carriage shall have a crank mechanism installed on one end, which shall be turned manually clockwise or counterclockwise to move the carriage in the desired direction. No more than five pounds of force on the crank shall be required to move a fully loaded carriage.

Carriages Carriages shall consist of a frame and drive train, upon which shelving units shall be installed. These carriages shall move as required after the appropriate crank is turned. All carriages shall be capable of supporting a minimum load of 1,000 pounds per carriage foot. No system component shall deflect greater than 0.5 percent of the distance between supports when fully loaded. No component shall exhibit permanent deformation after the maximum load has been removed.

Frame The frame shall consist of aluminum or steel channel, welded or bolted together to support a fully loaded shelving section. Cross bracing shall ensure rigidity. Bumpers shall be mounted on the frame, spaced appropriately to minimize carriage contact. The frame shall be designed for an integral drive train.

Drive chain Drive chain shall connect a set of gear reduction sprockets from the crank shaft to the drive shaft.

Drive shafts Drive shafts shall be made of steel and have a minimum diameter of 1 inch. Splices or connections to other sections of the drive shaft, drive wheels, and gears shall be slotted for key joints or use shoulder bolts. Drive shafts shall run through pillow block or flanged bearings on either side of the drive wheel. Slave drive shafts shall be driven by use of sprockets and chain from the main drive shaft.

Bearings Bearings shall have a static load rating equal to or greater than the maximum bearing loading, including applicable safety factors, under all operating conditions. Bearings shall be permanently lubricated, securely mounted, and properly housed for protection from physical damage.

Wheels Each carriage shall have two wheels per rail. Each carriage shall have at least two drive wheels and at least two guide wheels (drive wheels may also act as guide wheels). All wheels shall be balanced, hardened steel. Wheels which are connected to the drive shaft shall be slotted for key joints. Wheels shall be capable of supporting the fully loaded carriage. Wheels shall not slide or lose contact with the rail.

Guidance system All carriages shall use flanged wheels or guide bearings for guidance over the rails. If flanged wheels are used, each carriage shall have a minimum of two flanged guide wheels. If guide bearings are used, then each carriage shall have a minimum of four sets of guide bearings. Guide bearings shall be precision machined and permanently lubricated.

Stationary platform The stationary platform shall be of the same construction and height as the carriages, but it shall be anchored to the rails or floor and require no drive train.

Shelving sections Pallet Rack which conforms to the requirements of Appendix G shall be bolted to the carriages. Bin Shelving which conforms to the requirements of Appendix H shall be bolted to the carriages and stationary platforms.

Face panels Fire retardant, decorative, face panels shall be fastened to both ends of all the shelving sections. Face panels shall provide a rigid mounting location for controls and card holders. The face panels shall be fabricated from steel and cover the entire width and height of the shelving sections.

Row identification Card holders shall be installed on the face panels for row identification. Two card holders shall be mounted on each face panel unless the row is accessible from only one side, in that case only one card holder is required. The card holders shall be at least five inches wide by three inches high and mounted at eye level so that operators can locate numbers easily. Row identification cards will be made up by the warehouse personnel according to their established location assignment practices. A blank card will be provided by the Contractor for each card holder.

Rail Installation The carriages shall move over minimum one inch high, steel rail assemblies. After leveling the rails, load bearing grout shall be used to fill in any gaps between the rail assemblies and the existing floor. Rails shall be installed no more than seven feet apart.

End stops End stops shall be installed to prevent the end carriages from running off the rails. These end stops shall be securely anchored to the rail or the floor.

RAIL SKIRTS

Rail skirts shall be installed to cover the unfinished edges of the elevated floor, rail, and ramp.

Elevated flooring The existing concrete floor between the rails shall be prepared for a new slab, which shall be flush with the tops of the rails. Both sides of the rails shall be edged to prevent chipping of the slab next to the rails. The slab shall be installed such that it permanently bonds with the existing floor by etching, groove cutting, or similar method. The finished surface must provide a safe walking surface for personnel. Ramps shall be provided which do not extend past the end of the carriages into the main aisle. The grade on these ramps shall not exceed 10 percent.

RAMP

A metal ramp shall be provided on one side of the system. This ramp shall not extend past the end of the carriages into the aisles. The grade on this ramp shall not exceed 10 percent. The ramp to the main aisle shall permit easy access by mobile ladder stands.

Security Fence A section of the chain link security fencing, previously removed, shall be reinstalled along the north side of the mechanical-assist, mobile storage system as shown on AF Drawing ATY0B9-01. The fencing shall be installed in such a manner so as to deny access to the materials stored on the shelving units from the adjacent aisle. The contractor shall attach the fencing to the shelving units, as required, to maintain rigidity. Fencing shall not interfere with the user’s ability to adjust shelving heights.

Safety devices Anti-movement lock Each carriage shall be equipped with a mechanism which will lock the carriage in place while the operator is in the aisle.

Carriage lock devices Carriage lock devices shall be installed on all mobile carriages. These devices shall be key activated and prevent a carriage from being moved while locked in place.

Mobile ladder stands One manually propelled, mobile ladder stand shall be provided by the contractor. These ladder stands shall enable the operator to safely store and retrieve objects from the higher shelves of the system. The ladder stands shall have a minimum capacity of 250 pounds and shall be easily moved by one person.

Steps The top step shall be a minimum of 72 inches above the floor. The steps shall be at least 30 inches wide and have a nonskid surface.

Handrails The ladder stands shall have handrails, which are at least 30 inches above the steps. The top step shall have handrails around three sides.

Casters Each ladder stand shall roll on a minimum of four metal casters with rubber tires. The two casters nearest to the bottom of the steps shall be swivel casters.

Locking device The swivel casters shall be equipped with a locking device. This locking device shall be foot activated and be capable of raising the swivel casters off the floor (supporting the ladder stand on two fixed feet) or use the operator's weight to push two spring-loaded fixed feet onto the floor. This device shall prevent the ladder stand from moving until the operator unlocks the locking device.

Rubber caps The locking feet of the ladder stand shall be fitted with rubber caps to prevent the ladder stand from slipping while the lock is activated. All rubber caps shall be reinforced with metal to prevent the feet from wearing through the rubber caps.

QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS

Inspections The system shall be inspected to verify that it meets all the requirements of sections 1, 2, and 3 of this appendix and the cover purchase description. These inspections shall be completed as part of the systems checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

Tests The following tests shall be performed on the system as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

Description
1.
3.2.1.
A functional test of 24 hours in three eight hour increments shall be made on the system. It shall be tested randomly over this period. Test each crank by turning it both clockwise and counterclockwise. If the carriage does not move in the desired direction, the system fails the test.
2.
3.2.2.
The deflection test shall be performed randomly on any system component. The Contractor shall load the selected shelves to maximum loading. The shelves shall remain loaded for four continuous hours. At the end of the four hour period, the system shall be checked for deflection. If any system component deflects more than 0.5 percent of the distance between supports when fully loaded, the system fails the test. If any component exhibits permanent deformation after the maximum load has been removed, the system fails the test.
3.
3.2.13.1.
Test each anti-movement lock. If a carriage can be moved with a lock activated, the system fails the test.
