3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1. System description
Ball transfer conveyor shall provide smooth, easy manual transfer of package/tote pans in any direction. Ball transfer conveyor shall consist of a ball transfer deck. Loads are manually pushed across the ball transfer conveyor. The ball transfer conveyor shall interface with the inbound and outbound gravity roller conveyor lanes. The design of the ball transfer conveyor shall be approved by the Contracting Officer or Technical Representative (COTR) prior to fabrication. The ball transfer conveyor shall conform to the details shown on AF Drawing ATY0B9-01. All dimensions shown on AF Drawing ATY0B9-01 are nominal. The Contractor shall field verify all dimensions.
3.2. PERFORMANCE AND PHYSICAL Characteristics
3.2.1. Ball transfer DECK
The ball transfer conveyor shall be capable of transferring boxes varying in sizes up to 18 inches high by 24 inches long by 24 inches wide and tote pans containing small to medium size items or boxes from the in-bound GRC lanes to the outbound GRC.
3.2.1.1. Ball transfers
Ball transfers shall consist of a housing containing a minimum 1-inch diameter ball. The ball shall be stainless steel. Other metal components of the ball transfer shall be stainless steel, aluminum, or zinc plated. The ball transfers shall not corrode, rust, or deteriorate due to condensation. Ball transfers shall be lubricated for life and shall be shielded against contamination. Each ball transfer shall have a minimum load capacity of 375 pounds. The conveying surface shall extend a minimum of 1/4 inch above the ball transfer base plate. When installed adjacent to gravity roller conveyor, the conveying surface shall be level with the conveying surface of the gravity roller conveyor. Ball transfers shall be installed on maximum 4 inch centers. Ball transfers and the spacing used shall not damage tote pans containing small to medium size items or boxes being transferred on the conveying surface. Each individual ball transfer shall be removable without removing the ball transfer base plate. The ball transfers shall be retained in place to prevent shifting or movement.
Weight variations The conveyors shall be capable of transporting items in tote pans and/or in boxes ranging from a weight of 1 pound to 120 pounds.
3.2.1.2. Transfer frames
The ball transfer frames shall be constructed of structural steel and shall support all loads without permanent deformation.
3.2.1.7. Shims
As a minimum, the conveyor frames shall be shimmed at each anchor point and at all interface points between conveyor frames to ensure a smooth transition between conveying surfaces. Shims shall be provided so that the conveyor frames do not have an unsupported length greater than five feet. The shims shall be held in place by the anchor bolt. Shim holes shall be punched or drilled. Slotted shims shall not be acceptable. Beveled or half-shims shall be provided where required to ensure that each conveyor frame is level. The guide rails need only be shimmed to the point where they extend a minimum of 1-1/2 inches above the conveyor frames along the entire length of the conveyor. Shims shall be equal in width to the width of the component under which it is installed (either the conveyor support or the guide rail) and shall be aligned beneath the component. Each shim shall be a minimum of 4 inches in length. Shims shall be of sufficient varying thickness so that no more than five shims are installed at any point.
3.2.3. Conveyor levelness
The conveying surface of the entire system shall be level and true along its entire length and width. The conveying surface of all conveyors shall be level to within 1/8 inch over 10 feet measured along the length and width of the conveyor and across all conveyor frame interfaces. The conveyor shall provide a smooth surface for transporting tote pans containing small to medium size items or boxes.
3.2.4. Deformation under impact
All conveyor frames, rollers, bearings, ball transfers, and guide rails shall be capable of withstanding repeated impacts from on/off-loading and transfer of fully loaded boxes/tote pans without suffering any permanent deformation. Impacts shall occur from the manual transfer of package/tote pans onto and over the conveyor.
3.2.5. Interfaces
Package/tote pans shall not snag or bind at interfaces between conveyor frames.
Turning Posts Turning posts shall be installed as shown on Air Force Drawing ATY0B9-01. The turning posts shall assist in transferring packages/tote pans from the ball transfer conveyor onto the outbound GRC conveyor. Turning posts shall be constructed of stainless steel and shall extend a minimum of 16 inches above the conveyor surface.
4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4.1. Inspections
The system shall be inspected to verify that it meets all the requirements of sections 1, 2, and 3 of this appendix and the Cover PD. These inspections shall be completed as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.
4.2. Tests
The following tests shall be performed on the system as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.
No.
Paragraph
Description
1.
3.2.1.
Position two typical packages/tote pans (gross weight of 10,500 pounds each) on the ball transfer conveyor and leave for two hours. Push the loads off the conveyor. Inspect the conveyor for any deformation and individually spin each ball transfer to determine if it is still free rolling. If any deformation is present or if any ball transfers are not free rolling, the conveyor fails this test.
2.
3.2.2.
Test to ensure that the conveyor is level along its entire length and width providing a smooth surface for transporting loads. Using a level, verify levelness at a minimum of 20 different locations along the conveyor. Using a level verify levelness at a minimum of 10 different locations at conveyor frame interfaces. If the conveyor is not level to within 1/8-inch over 10 feet at all locations measured, the conveyor fails this test.
3.
3.2.2.
Test to ensure that the conveyor is true and level and that package/tote pans roll straight. A fully loaded package/tote pan shall be centered on a conveyor. The package/tote pan shall be pushed along the full length of the conveyor. Repeat with an empty package/tote pan. This test shall be repeated until all conveyors have been tested 5 times. If the package/tote pan touches the guide rail during the test, the conveyor fails this test.
4.
3.2.3.
Test to ensure all conveyor frames, bearings, ball transfers, and guide rails are capable of withstanding repeated impacts from on/off-loading and transfer of fully loaded package/tote pans without suffering any permanent deformation. Move a typical package/tote pan over every ball transfer. Repeat five times. If any deformation is present or if the package/tote pan would not transfer the conveyor fails this test.
5.
3.2.4.
Move a fully loaded package/tote pan over every ball transfer in the four primary travel directions. If the package/tote pan snags or binds between any frames, the conveyor fails this test.
4.3. Certifications
The Contractor shall provide certification that the following requirements have been met. All certifications shall be provided in accordance with the Contract Data Requirements List.
