About this file

This file is an artwork inventory spreadsheet listing over 400 pieces from the National Museum of the United States Air Force (NMUSAF) collection, organized by accession number, title, dimensions, medium, and current storage location. The artwork spans from 1950 to 1968 and includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and mixed media works depicting military aviation history, personnel portraits, combat scenes, and base operations. Pieces are executed in various mediums including oil, watercolor, casein, acrylic, charcoal, pen and ink, gouache, egg tempera, and mixed media. Dimensions range from small sketches (5"x4") to large canvases (97"x26"), with framed dimensions also noted where applicable. Storage locations are designated by flat file numbers, hanging rack positions (indicated by coordinates such as "1:5B" or "3:14A"), or specific areas including "Front Wall," "Bolling - Storage Racks," "Short Cart," and "Damage - Cart 3."

The inventory directly supports the related RFQ solicitation FA860126Q0119 for professional artwork handling, packaging, transportation, and delivery services for NMUSAF. The spreadsheet was updated on August 18, 2026, to reflect location changes, with certain pieces moved to "Front Wall" storage since the original list was created. This detailed inventory serves as the basis for contractors to understand the scope and complexity of artwork requiring specialized handling, including fragile and historically significant pieces with varying dimensions, materials, and current condition assessments (noted by damage indicators and storage method recommendations).

The RR Bridge, in the background, is down. The Bailey Bridge, in the foreground, is now the object of German attention. William Kepner's leadership of the 8th Fighter Command was a key factor in the World War II destruction of the German Air Force. Among his commands, in September 1943, he took over the 8th Fighter Command in the European Theater. As escorts for the strategic bombers, the fighter planes under him provided protection and also bombed and strafed the enemy, equipment and communications. During and following the Normandy Invasion, the 8th Fighters established a circular protective screen around the beachhead to prevent German counterattack. He demanded increased flying range and fuel capacity for aircraft and was successful in convincing aero companies and leadership to design aircraft that could hold fuel in the wings. He personally flew 24 combat missions in fighter and bomber planes and earned the Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross, three Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal and decorations from Great Britain, Belgium, France, Poland and China.

1951.042GENERAL E W RAWLINGS40" __35"Gen. Edwin W. Rawlings, USAF (Ret), (1904-1997) for whom an AFA chapter of more than 1,000 members is named, died at a nursing home in December in Auburn, Washington at age 93. A native of Milroy, Minn., Rawlings graduated with an economics degree from Hamline University, St. Paul, Minn., and became a flying cadet in February 1929. Almost 25 years to the day later, he became one of USAF's youngest generals, confirmed for a fourth star at 49. He had also, by then earned an MBA from Harvard. Eugene M. Zuckert, Secretary of the Air Force from 1961 to 1965, credits Rawlings with building a mature, business-like" image for the newly established Air Force. Zuckert said Air Force Secretary Stuart Symington asked him back in 1945 why he had to "send out a search party" whenever he needed Army Air Forces statistics. Zuckert remembered a memo suggesting the creation of a comptroller position and passed the idea on to Symington. In November 1946, Symington named Rawlings as air comptroller, helping to organize the office. The position was so successful and struck such a note--Rawlings did such a magnificent job--they adopted the idea of a comptroller for all three services. Zuckert said, "This was a very important step in the development of a postwar Air Force." In 1951, Rawlings became commander of Air Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, leading USAF's procurement and logistics efforts for seven years. Air Force Chief of Staff Thomas D. White credited him with spectacular increases in the effectiveness of the Air Force logistics, ... accomplished through new management methods, concepts, and philosophy, and thus the Air Force has been able to match the tempo of the jet, missile, and space era. Rawlings was a command pilot and combat and aircraft observer, whoe decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross, which he received in 1930 for his role in the rescue of an aircrew downed in the Pacific. He also received the Soldier's Medal in 1954 for rescuing his pilot who was lying underneath a B-17 that caught fire after landing at Wright-Patterson. After retiring from USAF in 1959, he went on to a career with General Mills, rising to become president and board chairman. Based in St. Pul, AFA's Gen.. E. W. Rawlings Chapter was chartered in August 1982. Also in his name, AFA and AEF in 1981 established the Gen.. Edwin W. Rawlings Award initally to recognize energy conservation achievements within USAF. Now the award recognizes and outstanding technician or manager in environmental matters.5:2A__AMO __Art ProgramOil

Academy award winner and Hollywood actor Clark Gable is shown talking with General Spaatz's daughter who worked for the Red Cross. Mr. Gable was a trained aerial gunner during the war, earning an air medal and distinguished flying cross, among others, for flying combat missions while stationed in England. It is said that Hitler offered a reward to anyone who would capture Gable and deliver him unhurt. After almost getting killed during a mission when the plane he and his crew were flying in was attacked, Gable's studio petitioned for him to be assigned non-combat duty. He finished his contributions to the war effort by making recruiting and motivational films. 1955.014MAJ GENERAL C T MENOHER54" __36"A Posthumous Portrait Pained By The Artist In 1955 From Photos Of The 20s. Born at Johnstown, Pennsylvania, March 20, 1862, he graduated from West Point in 1886 and was commisioned in the Artillery. He was promoted to First Lieutenant, December 1862 and graduated from the Artillery School in 1894.

During the Spanish-American War he served in Cuba and subsequently served three tours in the Philippines. He was promoted to Captain in February 1901.

During 1903-07, he was a member of the original General Staff of the Army, also graduating from the Army War College in the latter year and receiving promotion to Major in January, then returned to Cuba as Provost Marshal for the pacification forces stationed there. He was advanced to Lieutenant Colonel in May 1911. In June 1916 he was promoted to Colonel in command of the 5th Field Artillery.

He was promoted to Brigadier General in August 1917 and given command of the School of Instruction for Field Artillery of the American Expeditionary Force at Saumur, France, in September. In November he was promoted to Temporary Brigadier Generarl, and in December took command of the 42nd (Rainbow) Division, which participated in action in the Luneville and Baccarat Sectors, and in Champagne-Marne, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Operations.

Early in November 1918 he was promoted to the permanent rank of Brigadier General in recognition of his services in World War I. On November 10, the day before the Armistice, the 42nd reached the heights above Sedan, the most advanced position attained by U.S. troops, and on the same day, he was raised to command of the VI Corps. In December he was named Director of the Air Service, which in June 1920 was reorganized by the consolidation of the thehereto divided Supply and Operations functions of the fledgling air arm, separated from the Signal Corps, and made a part of the line of the army.

Largely because of friction with his assistant, Colonel William Mitchell, he was releived of the post at his own request in October 1921. He was promoted to Major General in March 1921 and in 1922-24 commanded the Hawaiian Division, and in 1925-26 the IX Corps Area at San Francisco.

He retired from the Army in March 1926 and died in Washington, D.C. on August 11, 1930. He was buried in Section 3 of Arlington National Cemetery.
