HSTT Responses to Industry Questions
1. Is this system for bulk materials or specific parts?
The system tests propellant that has been machined to specific specimen types. The main types are the uniaxial tensile samples about 5" tall, 0.5" thick, and 0.375" wide, the stress relaxation samples is a prism 4" long, 0.5" thick, and 0.5" wide, and a shear sample 3" long, 0.4" thick, and 1" wide.
2. How do we interface with test articles?
The current system has fixtures made by our machine shop designed to thread into a 1/2" by 20 threaded rod used in the load train of the tester.
3. What is the intent of the circulation fan? Temperature uniformity?
Yes the purpose of the circulation fan is to have a uniform temperature throughout the test vessel.
4. The Liquid available at 55psi. What is this and how is it to be used? Cryogenic fluid?
We use liquid nitrogen which is plumbed through the building from a 2000 gallon system. The system can pressurize up to 55 psi but generally is run between 40 and 50 psi. At 55 psi an internal rupture disk will burst and drain all pressure in the system. The liquid nitrogen is used to cool the inside of the pressure vessel by flowing it through internal pipes.
5. Please confirm the 3000PSI facility nitrogen is what is used to pressurize the vessel.
Yes the 2000 gallon liquid nitrogen system is equipped with a high pressure pump that generates our 3000psi gas nitrogen. The system charges two large pressure tanks for use by the pressure vessel.
6. Are the test articles themselves expected to generate any heat?
No, the test articles are not expected to generate any noticeable amount of heat as they are pulled in the tester.
