About this file

This document is a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for a Thermal Battery manufactured by Rafael Ordnance Systems Division in Israel. The battery contains multiple chemical ingredients including zirconium, lithium, aluminum, and trace amounts of asbestos, with potential hazardous properties when activated. Key safety considerations include: the battery can reach temperatures of 660°F within 5-20 minutes, poses burn risks upon contact, and emits toxic gases (H2S and SO2) if the hermetic seal is damaged.

Handling and safety precautions include: storing between -70°C and 100°C, using adequate ventilation, wearing protective gloves and eye protection, and using specialized safety chambers during testing. Disposal methods range from detoxification to hazardous landfill or deep ocean dumping. The battery is classified for transport as UN 3178, a flammable solid, and requires careful packaging with each battery packed separately to prevent damage. The MSDS emphasizes that the battery is stable when unruptured but can cause environmental and biological damage if activated near plants or animals.

3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION

Thermal: On activation, the case of the thermal battery can reach a temperature of 660°F (350°C) within 5 to 20 minutes.

Bursting: The worst case associated with thermal battery would be when the hermetic seal of the battery is damaged and gases are emitted (H2S and SO2). The venting will occur through the glass beads that serve as safety vents.

Hazard: The Thermal Battery is not harmful as long as it is not activated nor opened.

When activated the Thermal Battery can cause burns if it is in contact with skin.

The inner components are hazardous.

R 34 - Can cause burns.

S 37 - Use protective gloves.

Activation: Avoid short-circuiting, charging or applying loads out of the battery specification.

Protective shield (5 mm glass / 2 mm poly-carbonate) is recommended for laboratory experiments.

4. FIRST-AID MEASURES

In the case of

Inhaling Remove to fresh air. Refer to medical attention

Skin damage Rinse with plenty of water. Refer to medical attention.

Eye damage Rinse with plenty of water. Refer to medical attention.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

In the event of a fire, it must be extinguished in the vicinity of the battery by using a yellow, Class D META-L-X type extinguisher.

Do not use water or any other fire extinguishing devices.

After activation the battery must be allowed to cool down for approx. 4 hours. and then removed from its place.

6. SPILLAGE, ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

In the event of an accident, bursting or gas leak, clear the area immediately and acoid breathing the developed toxic gases. If you must enter the work area, use an open respiration system or an ABC mask.

Keep the battery contents away from water and place in sealed metal container.

A sudden increase in the case temperature is cause for alarm. If the case temperature exceeds 660°F (350°C) at any time, SEC. CLASS.: U.C

BUSINESS CLASS: U.C

cease testing and clear the area. In the case of a breakup in voltage clear the area immediately. This may indicate of a cell shorting.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Handling/storage temperature range: Avoid conditioning/heating/cooling at temperatures higher than 100°C or lower than -

70°C. Until usage store in unit packaging containers.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROL AND PERSONAL PROTECTION

Ventilation Control: Use with adequate ventilation.

Respiratory Protection: Special respiratory protection is not generally needed.

Eye Protection: Eye Protection is needed.

Hand Protection: Use glass cloth gloves to protect hands from heat.

Body Protection: Use body protection appropriate for task (apron or suit) When activating the battery use safety chambers capable of protecting test personnel from products of a rupture or a vent.

Test personnel should be at a safe distance from the chamber.

9. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

Boiling Point: N/A Solubility in Water: Not soluble in water Vapor Pressure: N/A Appearance: N/A Vapor Density: N/A Specific Gravity: >1

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Stability: stable Incompatibility: N/A Conditions to Avoid: The battery is hermetically sealed. Avoid any condition that would damage the case/sealing.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Suspected Cancer Agent: According to NOSHA regulations fibrous glass is potential carcinogens.

Irritancy of Agents: Lithium Aluminum alloy is expected to cause severe irritancy to skin and eyes.

Recommendations to Physicians: Treat symptoms and reduce over-exposure.

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Environmental Stability: If the case of the Thermal battery is not ruptured it will not react with the environment. If

Damaged, the lithium inside will react with air, moist and CO2 to form stable lithium salts and other inorganic compounds.

Effect on Plants and Animals: If activated next to an animal or a plant, will cause burns.

Degradability: No data currently available.

13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

Waste disposal methods:

1. Detoxification

2. Hazardous landfill

3. Dump in ocean > 50 miles at > 600 fathoms

14. TRANSPORT INFORMATION

Thermal batteries should be transported in an inner soft packaging to prevent damage to the battery's body.

Each battery should be packed separately.
