About this file

This document is a set of questions and answers related to a Request for Information (RFI) for the production and delivery of Tool Trailers for the Air Force.

The Air Force is seeking 9 to 83 Tool Trailers for the ABDR Technical Support Office at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The RFI addresses key technical requirements, including the use of a composite deck, hydraulic surge brake system, and corrosion protection measures. The government is open to vendor suggestions for improvements, but requires additional details on the feasibility and cost impacts of proposed changes, such as a maintenance-free lubrication system or extended corrosion protection. This RFI supersedes two previous RFIs (FA8100-24-EDMT and FA8100-24-TRLRS) for similar trailer requirements.

ABDR TRAILERS

FA8100-24-ABDRTRAILERS

05 June 2024

Question #1:

Will the Air Force test the trailer In Accordance With (IAW) SAE-AS8090 formerly MIL-STD-8090?

Response #1:

No, there are no plans to test the trailer IAW MIL-STD-8090.

Question #2:

Does the Air Force plan on service brakes for the new trailer, and if so, we recommend continued use of a hydraulic system over electric? Both MHU-12 and 141 trailer use service brakes, along with the parking brake.

Response #2:

Yes, recommendation for continued use of hydraulic surge brake system is preferred.

Question #3:

Paragraph 1.6.2 defines that trailer floor (deck) as being of composite material? Does the government want a composite deck designed into the trailer?

Response #3:

Yes, we want a composite deck.

Question #4:

Paragraph 1.10.1 discusses lubrication criteria. Is it acceptable to offer the Air Force a maintenance free system, that would not require any lubrication for the life of the trailer?

Response #4:

Improvements are welcomed in this Request for Information (RFI). However, we do not understand how that would be possible for trailers that would be in service up to 40 years in high humidity environments overseas. We would need to receive more information on how this would be accomplished, if there is added cost, etc.

Question #5:

There are coating available that can provide corrosion protection for the entire service life of the trailer.

Is the government interested in these coatings?

Response #5:

Improvements are welcomed in this Request for Information (RFI), but unsure if this corrosion protection would truly work up to 40 years in high humidity environment that is exposed to the weather. We would need more information such as added cost, life span of corrosion protection, etc.
