About this file
This is a Questions, Answers, and Comments document for federal solicitation FA700026Q0058, concerning the removal of the Cascade Wind Tunnel (CWT) at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA). The document addresses contractor inquiries regarding project scope, site conditions, and operational parameters for the demolition work.
Key project details include: no asbestos is present on site; all conduit must be removed, but only specific ductwork (circled in provided photos) requires removal; the HVAC unit contains R22 refrigerant and must be handled accordingly; the housekeeping pad supporting the HVAC unit should remain in place; and wall penetrations do not require filling after pipe removal. The facility has no basement, and doorways measure 7 feet tall by 6 feet wide. Contractors must complete the project within a 21-day window from the start date (excluding time for temporary badge acquisition) and are permitted to work 6am to 6pm on weekdays with temporary badges, though outside hours may be arranged with coordination. Fire suppression sprinklers will be shut off prior to work commencement through coordination with USAFA facilities. No restrictions apply to demolition tools, and dismantling methodology is flexible provided work is performed safely without damaging the building and in accordance with the Performance Work Statement. USAFA will remove all aircraft from the wind tunnel room prior to contractor mobilization, and additional construction projects may occur simultaneously within the building.
