USAFA LETTER OF EXCEPTION

JACKET, IMPROVED, PHYSICAL TRAINING UNIFORM

The following exceptions will apply when CRFD/PD 04-08 is used to manufacture running suit jackets for the United States Air Force Academy cadets.

Paragraph 3.2 Description. Replace the entire paragraph with the following paragraph.

The jacket shall be 100% polyester (see Table VII) AF blue shade 1651, fully lined with white 100% polyester mini-mesh. The jacket shall have long raglan-styled sleeves, collar, two welt pockets, and elastic at the wrists and jacket bottom (see Figure 3). The jacket shall have a full front opening slide fastener and its pockets shall have slide fasteners. The jacket shall have a 4 1/2 inch (+/–1/4 inch) dart at top of sleeve on shoulder. The jacket sleeves shall be screen printed with white reflective lightning bolt designs. The raglan sleeve shoulder seams shall be trimmed with 1/16 to 1/8” white reflective, filled piping.

Paragraph 3.2.2 Embroidery Description. Replace the entire paragraph with the following paragraph:

A Logo of a falcon in a circle holding a lightning bolt over the acronym USAFA, will be embroidered on left breast of the jacket. The finished embroidery on left front shall match the standard sample for size, stitch count, and finished appearance. Standard sample may be obtained from the contracting activity. The logo shall be embroidered in a polyester thread conforming to DoD Heraldic Yarn for Embroidery and Ribbon, Cable # HA White 67101 with a stiff backing. The embroidery backing shall be a pellon cut around and trimmed to 1/2 inch to 1 inch around the design. The logo shall fit in a 3-3/8” high by 2-2/8” wide square. The letters shall be 11/16” in height and approximately 7/16” in width. The circle diameter shall be 2-5/16”. The font for the “USAFA” will be Arial bold. The placement point for the logo shall be the bottom center of the logo.

The vertical placement of the logo shall be as in the below chart, which is the distance from the Raglan shoulder seam and collar seam intercept (sew lines) and the bottom center of the logo.

The horizontal center of the logo shall be the line parallel to the front zipper top stitching line and passing through the Raglan shoulder seam and collar seam intercept (sew lines). All thread ends that are visible on the item shall be trimmed to a length of not more than 1/4 inch.

Add the following paragraph 3.2.3 to the purchase description.

3.2.3: Screen printing. The lightning bolt design on the upper sleeve will be screen printed with brilliant white light-retro-reflective plastisol ink. The point of the bolt shall be facing the front of the garment on each side. The ink shall be bonded to the fabric so that reflective quality remains for the normal life of the product. A 45 degree angle shall pass through the bottom two corners and the point of the lightning bolt. The lightning bolt shall fit in a rectangle 7.5 inches width and 7 inches in height. The top width of the bolt shall be 3.75 inches. The positioning point shall be the top center of the logo and it shall be centered on the sleeve and located 10 inches from neck seam.

3.5.3 Reflective material. Replace the entire paragraph with the following paragraph:

The reflective trim for the arm hole piping shall be brilliant white produced using glass-beaded reflective material (see Table IV). The reflective shall be used to trim the armhole seam with a 1/16” to 1/8” filled piping. The cord for filling the piping shall be of good commercial quality suitable for the purpose intended and able to withstand commercial cleaning.

3.5.9 Labels. Replace the entire paragraph with the following paragraph:

A combination contractor identification and care shall be place label shall be placed in all garments. The label shall be cloth, cotton, permanent-coated, conforming to Type VI, classes 1, 2, 10, and 14 of Specification DDD-L-20. The label shall show the following information:

Applicable data to be inserted by the contractor when labels are printed.

Applicable data to be stamped in by contractor using permanent-type black ink after labels are printed.

A Code 39 bar code label shall also be affixed to the individual garment package. The Code 39 bar code shall be a removable paper ticket of commercial quality with the USAFA 10LRS/LGLC stock number and Code 39 bar code. The paper ticket shall contain a short item description to include size in plain text.

3.6 Patterns. Replace the entire paragraph with the following paragraph Standard patterns to be used for cutting the contractor’s working patterns shall be furnished by the Government in AccuMark electronic format. The working patterns shall be identical to the Government patterns except that additional notching to facilitate manufacture is permissible. Also minor modifications are permitted where necessary to accommodate manufacturer’s processes, the exception noted in this document and using automatic equipment. These modifications shall not alter the serviceability or appearance requirements. A ½ inch seam allowance shall be used to set sleeves, make pockets, join lining sides, and set sleeve linings. A ¼ inch seam allowance shall be used to make the pocket flaps, set the pocket flaps, make the collar, and set the collar. The seam allowance for the front slide fastener varies depending upon the size of the fastener tape.

Figures and Graphics. Ignore all figures and graphics pertaining to the USAF running suit. The USAF Academy graphics in this letter shall replace the AF graphics.
