About this file
This Request for Information (RFI) document relates to a crack seal and repair base pavements project for the Air Force Reserve Command, solicitation number FA6606-25-B-0003. The RFI focuses on obtaining clarification about pavement maintenance techniques, specifically addressing the preferred method of cleaning cracks prior to repair.
The response, citing UFC 3-270-01 (Asphalt Pavement Maintenance and Repair), outlines four potential crack cleaning methods: water blasting (acceptable without reservation), heat lance (acceptable with caution), compressed air (acceptable without reservation), and sand blasting (problematic due to potential surface damage). Based on past project experience, water and air methods are recommended as the most effective approaches. The RFI was submitted on 16 July 2025 and indicates no anticipated cost or schedule impacts from the information request.

QUESTION 01: What is the preferred method of cleaning the cracks?
WARB RESPONSE 01: UFC 3-270-01, Asphalt Pavement Maintenance and Repair Per the guidance of the UFC cleaning can take place multiple ways based on site conditions and the difficulty of achieving a clean surface.
Water blasting: acceptable without reservation Heat lance: acceptable with caution as to not damage the surrounding surface. (Use sparingly for vegetation) Compressed air: Acceptable without reservation Sand blasting: Per UFC this can be problematic due to the introduction of even more material and the ability to strip away the top of the surrounding asphalt.
Past projects: Water and air have worked best
