SECTION 07112
BITUMINOUS DAMPPROOFING
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1
DELIVERY AND STORAGE OF MATERIALS
Deliver materials in sealed containers bearing the manufacturer's original labels. Labels shall include the date of manufacture and the recommended shelf life.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1
MATERIALS
Materials shall conform to the requirements specified below.
2.1.1 Asphalt
Asphalt shall be suitable for use as a mopping coat in dampproofing or as a mopping or plying cement in the construction of membrane waterproofing systems with felts. Asphalt shall have good adhesive and "self-healing " properties, suitable for use above grade where it will not be exposed to temperatures exceeding 50 degrees C. Asphalt shall be homogeneous and free of water. Asphalt shall be prepared from crude petroleum and refined to conform to the following physical requirements.
Minimum
Maximum Softening Point
63 Deg. C
77 Deg. C
Flash Point
232 Deg. C
Penetration
0 Deg. C, 200g, 60s, 0.1 mm
25 Deg. C, 100g, 5s, 0.1 mm
46 Deg. C, 50g, 5s, 0.1 mm
Ductility at 25 Deg. C
Solubility in Trichloroethylene %
2.1.2 Asphalt Primer
Asphalt primer shall be suitable for use with asphalt dampproofing and waterproofing below or above ground level, for application to concrete and masonry surfaces. The primer shall be free from water and shall conform to the following requirements:
Saybolt Furol Viscosity at 25 Deg. C.
25 to 125s
Distillation, Volume % of the Primer
Up to 225 Deg. C
Not less than 35
Up to 360 Deg. C
Not more than 65
The residue obtained from the distillation up to 360 Deg. C shall conform to the following requirements:
Penetration at 25 Deg. C, 100g, 5s
20 to 50
Matter Soluble in Trichloroethylene
Not less than 99%
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1
PREPARATION OF SURFACES
Remove or cut form ties and repair all surface defects as required in Section 03300, "Cast-In-Place Concrete". Clean concrete and masonry surfaces to receive dampproofing of foreign matter and loose particles and apply dampproofing with a coat of creosote. Prime surfaces to receive asphalt dampproofing with a coat of asphalt primer. Apply priming coat when the ambient temperature is above 5 degrees Centigrade and at a rate of approximately 0.40 liters per square meter, fully covering the entire surface to be dampproofed.
3.2
APPLICATION
Use the cold-application method. Apply dampproofing after the priming coat is dry, but prior to any deterioration of the primed surface and when the ambient temperature is above 5 degrees Centigrade.
3.2.1 Cold-Application Method
Apply two coats of asphalt dampproofing to concrete covering and external plaster prior to covering or external walls finishing insulation laying. Apply each coat uniformly using not less than 0.8 liter of asphalt per square meter. Apply the first coat by brush to provide full bond with the primed surface, and brush or spray the second coat over a thoroughly dry first coat. Provide a finished surface that is of uniform thickness and impervious to moisture. Recoat porous areas.
