About this file
This memorandum from the F-35 Lightning II Joint Program Office provides guidance on approved aircraft weighing scales for USAF F-35A Operational-Level weight and balance capability. The F-35 JPO is developing weight and balance procedures and support equipment for USAF F-35A aircraft, with USAF units responsible for purchasing the required scales.
The certified scales are INTERCOMP AC30-60 roll-on platform scales, with equivalent alternatives permitted if they meet minimum specifications of 30,000 lb capacity and 0.1% accuracy of applied load; however, low profile scales and load cells are not permitted. Units must defer weight and balance activities until all required support equipment and weighing instructions are incorporated into Joint Tech Data. Personnel performing these activities must complete Automated Weight and Balance System (AWBS) software training with a demonstration weigh and must satisfy all training requirements in Joint Service Technical Manual TO-01-1B-50, followed by certification from their local weight and balance authority. For questions, contact Angelina McLaughlin at (937)713-7721 or John McClure at (571)213-4644.

(b) Joint Service Technical Manual TO-01-1B-50:
1. The purpose of this memorandum is to inform USAF/ACC of the approved aircraft weighing scales for units to purchase in anticipation of USAF F-35A Operational-Level (O- Level) weight and balance (W&B) capability. The F-35 Lightning II Joint Program Office (JPO) is developing O-Level W&B for USAF F-35A aircraft by developing W&B procedures for Joint Tech Data and developing unique support equipment. USAF units are responsible for purchase of aircraft weighing scales.
2. The scales certified by the F-35 JPO are INTERCOMP AC30-60 roll-on platform scales.
The web page for these scales can be reached with reference (a). Equivalent roll-on platform scales that have at least 30,000 lb capacity with an accuracy of 0.1% of the applied load are also permitted, but may require cooperation with JPO Support Equipment to authorize use.
Low profile scales and load cells are not permitted.
3. Units must wait until all required W&B support equipment and weighing instructions are added to Joint Tech Data before performing W&B activities. Additionally, personnel must be certified for F-35A W&B by attending an Automated Weight and Balance System (AWBS) software TIM which has a demonstration weigh. Personnel must also complete all training requirements in reference (b) and be certified by their local W&B authority.
4. For any questions regarding this memo, please contact Angelina McLaughlin, AFLCMC/WJ at (937)713-7721 (angelina.mclaughlin@jsf.mil) or John McClure, AFLCMC/ WJ at (571)213-4644 (john.mcclure2@jsf.mil).
