1. Introduction
The purpose of this document is to serve as a tight specification for producing and delivering CADD drawings for as-built drawings and construction projects. These guidelines are intended to ensure the successful use and control of CAD system and data throughout Cannon Air Force Base.
A signed copy of the CAD Quality Assurance Checklist, found in appendix A, must be submitted with CAD drawings and scans being delivered during the closeout phase of projects. When the CAD Quality Assurance Checklist has been signed and submitted, the vendor (architect, engineer, contractor, etc.) is assuring that all materials adhere to the standards and guidelines set forth in this document.
The layering standard, appendices B and C, outlined in this document is a modified version of the Tri- Service CAD A/E/C CADD Standard Release 3.0, dated September 2006. The Tri-Service CAD A/E/C CADD Standard contains supplemental materials with Department of Defense specific requirements not addressed in the U.S. National CAD Standard. The 27 Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron (27 SOCES) follows its own guidelines for naming and organizing CAD files.
Use Disclaimer All construction documents must include the following disclaimer (all ready incorporated on the 27 SOCES title block template): “WARNING: This document may contain sensitive information and therefore must be treated as a confidential document. The information contained in this document must be maintained in a confidential manner to prevent compromising homeland security as provided in Section 214 of the Homeland Security Act of 2002. 2. File Format and Setup
Electronic File Format As-built drawings and construction project drawings must be submitted to 27 Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron (27 SOCES) in full compliance with the version of AutoCAD (file extension = .DWG) that 27 SOCES is currently using. AutoCAD 2009 is the current version being used.
Policy on Model Space and Paper Space 27 SOCES requires that each CAD file submitted as a project deliverable contains only one drawing model with one title block, using either of the following setups.
1. Model Space and Paper Space Combined (recommended). Each CAD file is to be set up to contain only one title block in paper space which references the building model contained in model space.
2. Model Space Only. Both the drawing model and the drawing’s title block are contained in the same model space environment within a single CAD file. Paper space is not used with this option.
Electronic Drawing File Naming Conventions
Project Code A 0- to 20-character Project code is recommended and should be identified at the start of each project to ensure consistent file names within the project.
Examples:
Official agency project number
The project number defined by the agency system manager for their record system
Model file naming convention The model file naming convention (Figure 2-1) consists of one optional field, followed by three mandatory fields. The first field may be omitted, however the remaining fields must be used and in the correct sequence.
The first two-character field represents the Discipline Designator. Table 2-1 lists the only characters that can be used for the first character in the Discipline Designator, the second character is always a hyphen “-“. The next two-character field represents the Model File Type (Table 2-2). The final four-character code is User Definable.

Coordination between Sheet File Name and Sheet Identifier When assigning a sheet identifier (sheet reference block) the user should coordinate with the name assigned to the electronic sheet file. The identifier must consist of the discipline designator, sheet type designator, and the sheet sequence number.
The National CAD Standards mandates that the disciplines follow the order as shown in Table 2-1.

Title Blocks Each CAD file submitted to 27 SOCES should have only one title block. When paper space is used the title block will be placed with its lower left hand corner point inserted at a coordinate location of (0,0,0).
The drawing’s title block should contain certain information that 27 SOCES/CEPT needs to store and retrieve each drawing in its vault.
Consulting architects and engineers must use the 27 SOCES title block template or a modified version provided by 27 SOCES.
At a minimum title blocks should contain all of the following information listed below.
Project Information:
Firm Name – representing the drawing author
Project Name – as specified by Cannon AFB
Building Number – as specified by Cannon AFB
Building Name – specify only if the project name does not include this information already, and the project is building specific
Project Number – assigned by the Vendor Drawing Information:
Drawing Title – indicating the drawing content, e.g. floor plan, section, detail, etc.
Drawing Number
Date of Drawing – original drawing date including significant revision dates
Drawing Scale – representing the intended plot scale of the drawing with the title block North Arrow
Drawing Scales All CADD drawing models should be drafted at full scale in architectural, engineering, or decimal units, such that one drawing unit equals one inch.
The following tables list typical scales for drawings, text sizes and line type scales. Scales should be limited to those commonly found on hand-held architectural, mechanical, and engineering scales.

Tolerances
For As-Built Drawings Typically exterior building dimensions within CADD drawings must reconcile to within 1 inch of the building dimensions measured in the field, and interior dimensions must be within 1/2 inch of field dimensions.
For Construction Drawings Tolerances for construction drawings are contained within professional service
Dimensioning Dimension text height should match the size of the text in the rest of the drawing. The dimension text should be at the midpoint and top of the dimension line. Dimension lines will be offset a minimum of 9/16” and extension lines will be offset a minimum of 1/16” from the element being dimensioned.
Dimension terminators will be slashes, or architectural ticks.

4. LEVEL/LAYER ASSIGNMENTS
Levels/Layers
Level/layer naming convention The level/layer is the basic tool used in CADD for managing graphic information (Figure 4-1).
A-WALL-FULL-INTR-D
Optional Status Code
Discipline Designator
Major Group
Minor Group
2nd Minor Group
Figure4-1 Level/layer naming format
A basic level/layer name consists of a two-character Discipline Designator (e.g., “A-“ for Architectural, “M-“ for Mechanical), listed in Table 2-1, a four-character Major Group (e.g., “DOOR” for Doors, “LITE” for Lighting Fixtures), and a four-character Minor Group (e.g. A-WALL-CNTR for wall centerlines, M- HVAC-CDFF for HVAC ceiling diffusers).
All layers will be reconciled within each drawing. This will identify any potential errors or problems prior to plotting.
Model Files
Level/layer assignment tables The level/layer assignment tables in Appendix B present the following:
The levels/layers assigned to each model file
A description for each level/layer
The recommended presentation graphics associated with each level/layer. Including line style, line width, and color. (Note: These recommendations may be modified to enhance the clarity of the drawing. However, the recommendations should be adhered to as much as possible to maintain consistency).
The various model files that levels/layers can be created in.
Status (Phase) levels/layers Levels/layers may be modified to show the status of a particular item in the drawing. A level/layer may have a Status Field appended to them as shown in figure 4-1. Table 4-1 shows Status (Phase) codes.
The use of Status (Phase) codes should be limited due to the possibility of a significant increase in the number of levels/layers in a model file.
Table 4-1 Status (Phase) Codes Code Description N New work
E Existing to remain
D Existing to demolish
F Future work
T Temporary work
M Items to be moved

19 | P a g e
Reference files (XREFs) 27 SOCES/CEPT will not accept the submission of any CAD drawing deliverable which contains references to external source drawing files. All externally referenced data sources that were used during the drawing production phase should be inserted and retained as a block within a single drawing file, including the title block, upon project completion and prior to drawing delivery. The resulting self-contained drawing file is an acceptable deliverable to 27 SOCES.
Sheet Files
Level/layer assignment tables The level/layer assignment tables in Appendix C present the following:
The levels/layers assigned to each sheet file.
A definition for each level/layer
The recommended presentation graphics associated with each level/layer, including line style, line width, and color.
20 | P a g e
5. SYMBOLOGY
Policy on Blocks At this time 27 SOCES is not requiring the use of any particular block definitions or block libraries. When developing blocks it is required that the following general rules will be followed.
1. All entities within a block must be created on layer 0.
2. Drawing entities translated into AutoCAD from non-AutoCAD systems must revert to layer 0 when exploded within AutoCAD.
Tabulated Version of the Symbology/Elements A symbology library may be provided if requested. The library contains four types of elements: Lines, Patterns, Symbols, and Objects. Lines are graphical representations of linear drawing features (e.g.
utility lines, fence lines, contours, etc.). Patterns are defined as repeated drawing elements (e.g. lines, dots, circles, etc.) within a defined area. Symbols are AutoCAD blocks that represents objects (electrical outlets, light fixtures, etc.). Objects are AutoCAD blocks that retain their actual size no matter the drawing scale (e.g. doors, furniture, etc.).
21 | P a g e
6. Policy on CAD File Translation
Error-free AutoCAD Drawing Deliverables 27 SOCES realizes that many service providers do not use the same CAD system as Cannon AFB.
However, 27 SOCES expects that providers who work with non-AutoCAD file formats will submit DWG formatted CAD files upon project closeout that are fully compliant with all the standards in this document, which have no significant loss of drawing entities or project data that can result from standard CAD file translation.
All DWG files and CAD drawing entities submitted at the completion of a project must be able to be manipulated using standard AutoCAD drafting procedures. Non-compliance with this policy may result in the rejection of submitted files at the time of closeout. DXF files will not be accepted at project closeout as a substitution for DWG CAD files.
Translation Testing Recommended For firms translating their native CAD file format into DWG format concerned about delivering error-free CAD files to Harvard upon project closeout, it is strongly recommended that thorough file translation testing be conducted before the drawing development phase of the project. This will assure early detection of file conversion issues, if any, and allow for corrective measures to be taken before the project closeout period.
