55 Ton Chiller Questions & Answers 22 May 2025

Pre-site visit questions

1. How often is the maintenance required for the temporary chiller?

The required maintenance will depend on the chiller unit and the manufacturer’s installation requirements.

2. Do they have 150 amp breaker at 480V 3 phase available? RFQ shows 120 amp service. (That will be short of amps for our 60 ton but can run our 40 ton)

It is believed that up to 200 amps is supportable. The contractor is advised to inspect the work area, its dimensions, and building limitations prior to work start.

3. RFQ says they have grooved piping connections (Which is great) but does not list the size of the pipe. Our 40 ton has 2.5” connections and our 60 ton has 4” connections. I can supply reducers but need to know the piping size.

The existing chilled water piping is believed to be 4 inches diameter. The contractor is advised to inspect the work area, its dimensions, and building limitations prior to work start.

4. How much power cable from the switch inside to the chiller sitting outside? RFQ says within 50’ of chiller laydown to electrical breaker. Need to confirm. Can our power cable be left on the ground, or will they require to be elevated?

The base has demoed the chiller CH-2 and its outside condenser. The contractor may use this former chiller’s power, either directly from the breaker in the electrical room or via the disconnect switch in the mechanical room. Depending on location on the unit and orientation on the pad, the chiller hookup is approximately 15-40 feet from the CH-2 breaker and approximately 60-85 feet from the CH-2 disconnect switch. Either may be used. The contractor is advised to inspect the work area, its dimensions, and building limitations prior to work start.

An elevated cable is preferred but may not be possible.

5. Who is responsible for wiring the rental chiller?

The contractor is responsible for this work.

6. They say they are going to demo the chilled water pipe outside, so where will our hose connect to their system?

The base will demo the condenser located in the “Rental chiller laydown” area marked in Figure 1 of the Statement of Work and it’s piping up to the tee connection with the northwest condenser. The connection point shall be at this tee. The condensers’ lines tie into the CH-2 loop, which serves an unused zone of the building. Contractor is to open these lines to provide connection to the CH-1 loop, abandoning and capping unused piping extending south. There are sections in the CH-1 loop designated for marked in red. See attached photo “010 CH-1 Connection Locations.” All piping work inside the building shall be performed by the contractor.

7. Will they keep some piping outside for connecting?

Yes. The base’s condenser demolition to clear the equipment pad will include the unit’s piping up to the tee connection with the northwest condenser. The condenser’s connection to this joint will be removed, allowing the rental chiller’s lines to connect. The CH-1 loop has elbows designated for replacement to tees for connection. They are marked in red. See attached photo “010 CH-1 Connection Locations.” This replacement will be the contractor’s work.

8. How much hose will be needed? RFQ says connections will be within 50’ of chiller placement, but need confirmation on how that hose will be run? On the ground or hung? Can we tie to chilled water piping outside? Also Supply hose: Return Hose:

Tie-ins to chilled water piping outside are approximately 10-35 feet from the pad, depending on location on the unit and orientation on the pad. A separate tie-in will also be needed inside, connecting the penetrating lines to the CH-1 loop, approximately 10 feet away.

The contractor is advised to inspect the work area, its dimensions, and building limitations prior to work start. Elbows in the CH-1 loop are designated for replacement with tees to connect are marked in red. See attached photo “010 CH-1 Connection Locations.” This replacement will be the contractor’s work. Hung is preferred but may not be possible.

9. Will we be using the facilities pumps? If not, that will add amps to each of our chiller options.

The facility’s pump may be used. See attached photo “016 Pump Information.”

10. Who is responsible for unloading and reloading the chiller?

The contractor will be responsible for these tasks.

Post-Site Visit Questions

11. Page 5 of 6 is a picture of existing penetrations and noted (existing lines will be demo’d) will these be demo’d before the rental unit is needed?

Yes, this demolition will be complete before the rental unit is installed.

12. If existing penetrations are not removed before rental start where would the next available site be?

The contractor may use the mechanical and electrical room door openings so that lines may enter the building. If these are used, seal doorways closed with inserts made of plywood or a similar material.

13. The electrical breaker was identified as a 200 amp breaker and in the solicitation it was identified as a 120 amp breaker, can you confirm?

It is believed that the CH-2 breaker serves 200 amps. The contractor is advised to inspect the work area, its dimensions, and building limitations prior to work start.

14. Rental chiller placement as identified in the solicitation drawing, is different then actual site conditions, is the rental chiller able to be placed on the grass in front of the temporary wall into the building?

15. Incorrect information was given in the site visit. The chiller is to be placed in the area specified in Figure 1 of the Statement of Work.

Placing the chiller on the grass by the mechanical yard is not acceptable.
