1. Structural loads.
2. Thermal movements.
3. Movements of supporting structure.
Specify dimensional tolerances for support system and adjacent construction in other Sections of this Project's Specifications.
4. Dimensional tolerances of building frame and other adjacent construction.
B. Failure includes the following:
1. Deflection exceeding specified limits.
2. Water leakage.
3. Thermal stresses transferred to building structure.
4. Noise or vibration created by wind and thermal and structural movements.
5. Loosening or weakening of fasteners, attachments, and other components.
6. Delamination of fiberglass-sandwich-panel faces from panel cores.
C. Structural Loads:
Show structural design data determined by Project's structural engineer on Drawings or insert requirements in applicable subparagraphs below. Verify requirements of authorities having jurisdiction. See "Design Loads, General" Article in the Evaluations in Division 8 Section "Translucent Wall and Roof Assemblies."
1. Wind Loads: 54 psf.
Model codes require sloped assemblies to resist snow loads or roof live loads, whichever are greater.
2. Snow Loads: 30 psf.
Retain subparagraph above and first subparagraph below for overhead assemblies such as roofs and skylights. Concentrated live loads usually represent weight of personnel performing maintenance on overhead assemblies or adjacent roof areas. Overhead assemblies that cannot support concentrated live loads may require protective screens or covers; see "Protection" Article in the Evaluations in Division 8 Section "Translucent Wall and Roof Assemblies."
Indicate code that must be used to calculate load combinations on Drawings or insert requirements in subparagraph below.
Delete first paragraph below if not required.
D. Thermal Movements: Allow for thermal movements from ambient and surface temperature changes. Base engineering calculation on surface temperatures of materials due to both solar heat gain and nighttime-sky heat loss.
Differential values below (for aluminum in particular) are suitable for most of the U.S. Revise to suit local conditions and metal color and finish.
1. Temperature Change (Range): 120 deg F (67 deg C), ambient; 180 deg F (100 deg C), material surfaces.
1.4 PERFORMANCE TESTING
A. Provide assemblies that comply with test-performance requirements indicated, as evidenced by reports of tests performed on manufacturer's standard assemblies testing
Four subparagraphs and associated subparagraphs below describe Project-specific preconstruction-testing requirements; delete if selecting first option in paragraph above; retain if selecting second option.
Indicate size and other details of laboratory mockups on Drawings or by inserts.
Delete first subparagraph below if not required.
Before retaining testing requirements in remainder of this Article, see "Testing, General" and "Preconstruction Testing" articles in the Evaluations in Division 8 Section "Translucent Wall and Roof Assemblies." Manufacturers test their standard assemblies differently, and testing for vertical assemblies may vary from overhead assemblies.
B. Air-Infiltration Test: ASTM E 283.
ASTM E 283 requires using a static-air-pressure difference of 1.57 lbf/sq. ft. (75 Pa), unless otherwise indicated, which is equivalent to a 25-mph (40-km/h) wind. Static-air-pressure difference of 6.24 lbf/sq. ft. (300 Pa) is equivalent to a 50-mph (80-km/h) wind.
C. Test for Water Penetration under Static Pressure: ASTM E 331.
Static-air-pressure difference of 20 percent of wind-load design pressure is appropriate in most parts of the U.S.; various AAMA publications include this recommendation. Locations where high winds and heavy rains frequently occur simultaneously may require higher test-pressure differences. Lower test-pressure differences are acceptable for some locations. Revise first subparagraph below to suit Project.
1. Minimum Static-Air-Pressure Difference: 20 percent of positive wind-load design pressure, but not less than 10 lbf/sq. ft. (479 Pa).
2. Water Leakage: None.
Test method in paragraph and subparagraphs above is most frequently specified. Test method in paragraph and subparagraphs below is generally more expensive than static method. Both static and dynamic testing may be required or desired for certain designs.
D. Test for Water Penetration under Dynamic Pressure: AAMA 501.1.
1. Dynamic Pressure: 20 percent of positive wind-load design pressure, but not less than 15 lbf/sq. ft. (718 Pa).
AAMA 501.1's definition of water leakage allows up to 1/2 oz. (15 mL) of water to accumulate on an interior stop or stool integral to system in a 15-minute period.
2. Water Leakage: No uncontrolled water penetrating systems or appearing on systems' normally exposed interior surfaces from sources other than condensation. Water controlled by flashing and gutters that is drained to exterior and cannot damage adjacent materials or finishes is not considered water leakage.
Paragraph and subparagraph below are appropriate for overhead assemblies but may be unnecessary if products are tested using static- and dynamic-pressure tests for water penetration. Consult manufacturers for guidance.
E. Water-Penetration, Wind-Driven-Rain Test: Wind-driven-rain test in ICBO ES AC07, "Special Roofing Systems."
1. Water Leakage: None.
If Project-specific preconstruction testing for effects of thermal movement is necessary, insert requirements for testing according to AAMA 501.5. Standard systems are usually not tested; instead manufacturers often rely on calculations and in-service performance of standard details to verify thermal-movement capabilities.
In hurricane-prone areas, authorities having jurisdiction may require debris-impact and cyclic-pressure testing for assemblies. If required, insert testing requirements for windborne-debris impact resistance. See the Evaluations in Division 8 Section "Translucent Wall and Roof Assemblies" and verify requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.
