MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE
DIVISION 08 – DOORS AND WINDOWS
SECTION 083900 - BLAST RESISTANT ARCHITECTURAL ALUMINUM DOOR AND FRAME
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
A. All work of this section shall comply with the requirements of the contract, including general and special conditions, along with the drawings and all other documents.
B. The aluminum doors and frames and their glazing materials specified in this section are to be located in the designated areas as shown on the drawings.
C. The aluminum doors and frames shall include all glazing materials, all door and frame hardware which includes, panels, glass, ballistic glazing transparencies, gaskets, sealants, anchors, installation and all other components for a complete system and its installation.
D. Inspection - All shop and field materials and workmanship shall be subject to inspection by the contracting officer at all times. These inspections shall not relieve this contractor from the obligation to provide materials conforming to all requirements of the contract documents and matching approved samples. This contractor shall promptly correct any deficiencies reported and shall carry out his own control measures for all materials, whether inspected or not.
1.2 SCOPE OF WORK
A. This contractor shall include all labor, materials, hardware, tools, equipment and services to manufacture, assemble, deliver (including all import/export documents) and install all items necessary for the proper execution and completion of said items of work, as shown on the drawings, as specified herein, and/or as required by job conditions to provide a complete installation.
B. All work of this section shall comply with the requirements of the contract, including general and special conditions, along with the drawings and other contract documents.
C. The extent of this section is detailed on contract documents and includes, but not necessarily limited to the following:
1. All extruded blast aluminum doors and frames.
2. All glazing materials in conjunction with the doors and their sidelites, including transparent glass.
3. Anchors, brackets and clips and fasteners attaching materials specified in this section to structure.
4. Cast in concrete inserts and/or embeds, where and if required. Design, layout and inserts/imbeds materials will be provided to the general contractor for his installation.
5. Shop drawings, engineering calculations, erection drawings, samples, and test reports as required.
6. Protection and cleaning as defined herein.
7. Sealants, including perimeter caulking with closed cell (non-gassing) backer rods and internal sealing as required.
1.3 RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE AND/OR EXCLUDED
A. Any glass or glazing other than that required in conjunction with this system.
B. Field measurements. The general contractor shall be responsible for providing openings to dimensions shown on the approved shop drawings within the allowable specified building tolerances. If no building tolerances are specified, the General Contractor must provide openings as shown on the approved shop drawings and be capable of receiving the framing without jeopardizing the integrity of the complete installation.
C. Miscellaneous iron work including any steel or aluminum trim members, braces (“kicker braces”) used to support/strengthen or stiffen members.
D. Any miscellaneous materials not shown as being supplied by this contractor on the approved shop drawings.
E. Field measurements.

1.5 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. The complete aluminum door and framing system shall not exceed profile or sightline dimensions shown on the drawings.
B. Glazing of all transparencies shall be performed using a dry glazing method incorporating neoprene gaskets. Wet glazing with sealants will not be permitted.
C. All aluminum exposed to view will receive an anodized dark bronze finish.
D. The system with all its components shall be designed to meet or exceed all blast requirements as specified.
E. All sidelites, transoms, etc shall have an internal weep system designed to carry any water entering the internal part of the system to the exterior.
1.6 PERFORMANCE AND TESTING REQUIREMENTS
A. The complete system shall be designed to meet or exceed the following resistance requirements. Conformance shall be demonstrated by calculations or test reports.
B. Structural properties
1. Design loads
a. Positive (inward) design pressure of 30 psf.
b. Negative (outward) design pressure of 30 psf
2. Deflection limitations
a. The deflection of any framing member in a direction normal to the plane of the wall when subjected to the specified design loads shall not exceed l/175 of its clear span or 3/4” whichever is less.
b. For cantilevers, the span shall be taken as two times the distance between anchor centerline and end of cantilever.
c. The deflection shall not exceed 50% of the nominal joint width at sealant joints occurring between framing members and relatively stiff building elements, or less if required by sealant manufacturer.
d. Upon reversal of load direction at magnitudes up to and including1.5 times design pressures, slippage at fastened and/or clamped connections, shall not exceed .125 inch.
e. Glass deflection at full design load shall not exceed 1/100 of its span, or 3/4” whichever is less.
f. Metal panel deflection shall not exceed 1/90 of its span or 3/4” whichever is less. The span shall be taken as the lesser of the distances between the horizontal or vertical support members.
3. Structural design criteria and testing requirements.
a. The work shall be designed to withstand the design loads and pressures specified herein. Compliance shall be demonstrated by calculations performed in accordance with accepted engineering practice.
b. The work shall be designed to conform to ASTM E 330. Inward and outward acting test pressures shall be equal to 1.5 times the inward and outward acting design pressures to demonstrate a safety factor of 1.5 design pressures. Satisfactory performance at these loads shall mean no glass breakage, no permanent damage to fasteners or anchors, hardware, parts or actuating mechanisms; no malfunction of fixed lites, no permanent deformation of main framing members in excess of 0.2% of their clear span.
C. Provision for thermal movement
1. The work shall be designed to provide for such expansion and contraction of component materials as will be caused by surface temperatures ranging from 20 degrees F to a high temperature of 180 degrees F.
2. The expansion and contraction caused by this temperature differential shall not cause buckling, undue stress on glass, failure of joint seals, undue stress on structural elements, demanding loads on fasteners, reduction of performance or other detrimental effects.
D. Blast Rating:
1. UFC Blast Design Criteria: The overall aluminum window system including all components shall be designed, fabricated, and installed to comply with the blast loading requirements of UFC 4-010-0, “DoD Minimum Antiterrorism Standards for Buildings”, 8 October, 2003, including change 1, 22 January 2007. The stair tower and canopy structure fall under a controlled perimeter, low level of protection. Conventional standoff of 82 feet and an applicable explosive weight of II.
E. Basis of Design
1. Design based from Wausau, Series 8000 BHM – Curtain Wall system. Curtainwall manufacturer to provide all clips/ anchoring devices to anchor both translucent panels to curtainwall frame and anchoring back to building structure. Finishes to match main curtainwall frame. Structural clip to be painted to match adjacent finish.
1.7 SUBMITTALS
A. Highlight all descriptive literature to accomplish identification of specific components/items which are proposed to be furnished. Government will not react to descriptive material/literature which has not been high-lighted, except to reject the Submittal.
B. Prior to submitting any documents, this contractor shall identify any deviations or exceptions to the architectural drawings and project specifications or addenda not covered in his bid.
C. Contactor will provide proposal drawings or other descriptive literature, technical data, identifying specifically what his bid includes D. Shop Drawings shall include:
1. A cover sheet containing an index of drawings, project name and location. Finished date, revised date and revision number shall appear on all sheets.
2. A complete index of materials (alloy, temper, thickness, finish,coating, size, trade name, product name, etc.)
3. Floor plan of each different floor showing door locations and column lines or other identifying marking.
4. Unit elevations (to scale) referencing particular details, etc.
5. Details showing all conditions of the units and their relationship to surrounding materials or conditions.
6. Details showing all anchorage conditions, connections, sealant applications, welds, glazing details with glass and metal sizes a and relationships and glass face in relationship to exterior face of the doors and framing.
7. All floor plans, elevations and details shall be referenced together.
8. All revised drawings have to “bubble” the revised areas and reference the revision number.
E. Structural calculations for door frames
1. Calculations to be done in accordance with common, accepted engineering practice and shall conform to appropriate design rules of the referenced documents and building ordinances. All documents are to bear the seal of a licensed engineer
2. Calculations shall include:
a. Material specifications and properties.
b. The derivation of member properties.
c. Analyses of stress and deflections for all structural elements,connections and anchorages.
d. Full size dimensioned drawings of extrusion shapes.
e. Show ultimate factor of safety.
F. Samples
1. Aluminum color samples
a. (4) sets of range sample for all anodized finishes
2. Glazing materials: (4) 12” x 12” samples of each glass type.
3. Gaskets, backer rods, joint fillers – (4) 12” samples of each.
4. The owner and architect reserves the right to require samples which show the fabrication techniques and workmanship of component parts and the design accessories and other exposed auxiliary items before fabrication of this work begins.
5. All submittals should indicate the origin and brand.
1.8 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. The contracting officer reserves the right to visit the fabrication facilities of the contractor, any approved sub-contractor and accepted test laboratories, at any time while work is in progress. All shop and field materials and workmanship shall be subject to observation by the owner and/or architect or their representatives at all times. Such observations shall not relieve the contractor from his obligation to provide materials and construction conforming to all requirements of the contract documents.
B. All testing, if required, shall be performed by accredited laboratory personnel or witnessed and certified by a qualified professional engineer.
1.9 QUALIFICATIONS
A. The work in this section shall be performed by one contractor who has specialized in this field for a documented minimum of (5) years and is regularly engaged in the engineering, manufacture, installation, glazing and sealing of these specialized ballistic and tornadic systems.
1.10 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS
A. All work shall be performed in accordance with the applicable building code or the requirements of this specification, whichever is more stringent.
1.11 DOOR AND FRAME HARDWARE
A. All door and frame hardware must be supplied by door manufacturer and installed by this contractor.
B. All doors shall be pre-hung in their frames in the factory to assure proper fit and clearances C. Hardware for aluminum entrance doors shall be as follows:
D. Cylinder for aluminum each door: 7 pin high security (SC) Basis of Design or equal.
E. Manufacturer to provide it’s standard panic hardware, handles and closers.
1.12 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. All components of the doors and frames shall be identified after fabrication by marks clearly indicating their location on the building B. Packing shall be the minimum necessary to protect parts from damage during shipment, distribution and storage.
C. The general Contractor shall provide on site storage in a location and area protecting the stored materials from damage and the environment.
1.13 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
A. Do not install sealants when ambient temperature is less than 40 degrees F.
B. Maintain this minimum temperature during and after installation of sealants.
C. When circumstances require sealant application below 40 degrees F, steps shall be taken to assure dry and frost-free surfaces.
1.14 COORDINATION
A. The work under this section shall be coordinated with related work of other trades in a manner to ensure the steady progress of work under this contract.
1.15 WARRANTY
A. Unless stated otherwise in these specifications, the guarantee shall state that all work is in accordance with the drawings and specifications, free from defects in materials, finish and workmanshipfor a period of one (1) year from the date of acceptance of the work by the owner and/or architect. This contractor shall agree to repair or replace defective materials and workmanship to a “like new condition”, including such exploratory work as necessary to determine the cause, at no additional cost to the owner/architect, unless the cause is directly related to any other party or trade other than this contractor.
B. Purchased items, such as glass and sealants, shall carry the manufacturer’s standard warranty.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Complete aluminum door and framing system, hardware and glazing materials shall be as produced, manufactured, supplied and installed by GE Polymershapes-Insulgard or approved equal.
B. Neoprene glazing gaskets, setting blocks, and other related Neoprene products shall be as manufactured by The D.S. Brown Company or approved equal.
C. Sealants shall be as manufactured by Dow Corning, General Electric, Tremco, or approved equal. Selection of sealant for particular applications shall be in accordance with manufacturers recommendations. Application methods shall be as set by manufacturers and industry standards
2.2 MATERIALS
A. Aluminum extrusions shall be extruded from prime billet in the alloys and tempers shown, subject to fabrication, finish and performance requirements: 6063-T5, 6063-T6, 6105-T5 or 6061-T6.
B. The following alloy and temper combinations are acceptable for aluminum sheet and plate subject to fabrication, finish and performance requirements: 3003-H14, 5005-H14. Other alloys of the 3000, 5000 or 6000 series may be substituted for approval.
C. Laminated polycarbonate compositions for ballistic requirements shall be as specified for up to level 8 rating as defined by UL 752 ballistic specifications. All laminated composition security glass units, whether specifically shown or specified, shall conform to manufacturer’s standards as to maximum size for each type.
D. Steel
1. Hot rolled shapes, plates and bars ASTM A36
a. Sheet and strip, cold rolled (grades A thru E) ASTM A611
b. Sheet and strip, hot rolled (grades A thru E) ASTM A570
c. Sheet, hot dipped galvanized (grades A thru F) ASTM A446
2. Structural tubing, hot formed, welded and seamless ASTM A618
3. Aluminized steel sheet conforming to ASTM A 463, coating T1-40
E. Stainless steel for interior or exterior applications: sheet, strip, plate, flat bar or extrusions, (AISI 302 or 304 Grades A thru D) ASTM A666 F. Steel armor shall be special tempered armor plate to meet or exceed the specified ballistic requirements.
G. Fasteners, connectors and anchors.
1. Fastener requirements listed are applicable to screws, bolts,washers, nuts, rivets and pins used in the assembly of all aluminum frame components shall be stainless steel type 302 or 304.
2. All self drilling/ self tapping fasteners (Teks) shall be ‘Dril-flex with stalguard finish as manufactured by ELCO Industries or approved equal.
3. All expansion anchors, expansion bolts and other masonry fasteners shall be nickel or zinc coated or approved equal.
2.3 COMPONENTS
A. Sealant backer rod: Soft reticulated closed cell backer rod which does not absorb water and is non-gassing when punctured.
B. Air seals: Soft density closed cell neoprene sponge.
C. Weep baffles where required: 45 PPI reticulated PVC coated open cell neoprene foam, compressed 30-40% minimum.
D. Double faced foam adhesive tapes: 3M Scotch brand VHB tape, sized for proper application.
E. Neoprene glazing Gaskets: Solid neoprene gaskets shall be of 65-70 durometer hardness. Neoprene sponge gaskets shall be closed cellular sponge of 40-50 durometer hardness.
2.4 FABRICATION
A. General: All parts of the work shall be of the materials, design, sizes and thickness herein specified or as may be required to meet the aesthetic intent and performance criteria. Methods of fabrication and assembly, however, unless otherwise specifically stated, shall be at the discretion of this contractor.
B. Workmanship
1. All work shall be done by competent workmen thoroughly skilled in the trade. Use no materials, equipment or practices that may adversely affect the functioning, appearance or durability of the completed product and related construction.
2. Joints in metalwork shall be carefully matched to produce continuity of line and all joints, unless otherwise shown or specified, shall be accurately fitted and rigidly secured. Any exposed edges shall be finished to match face of work (i.e. edges of mullions, etc. at expansion joints).
3. Joinery intended to be “in plane” shall not vary from true alignment by more than 0.032”.
4. All joint intersections, where required, will be buttered with appropriate sealant
5. Seal all penetrating screws that could cause any water to enter the system.
C. Shop assembly: All doors and hardware shall be pre-hung and fitted in their frames at the factory for proper clearances and fit.
D. Exposed fasteners: Exposed fasteners on finished and exposed surfaces shall not be permitted unless otherwise shown on approved drawings.
E. Protection of metals: Protection against galvanic action shall be provided wherever dissimilar metals are in contact, except in the case of aluminum in contact with stainless steel. All metals, except stainless steel, which are to be in contact with concrete, mortar or plaster, shall have two coats of different colored zinc rich primer or bituminous paint.
F. Shop painting of carbon steel: Items of carbon steel, unless galvanized after fabrication or scheduled for other finish shall, after completion of fabrication and welding, be thoroughly cleaned of all loose scale, filings, dirt or other foreign matter and shall be painted with two coats of zinc rich primer in two different colors.
G. Use of sealant materials: All uses of sealing materials shall be in strict accordance with the recommendations of the sealant manufacturer.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Before beginning any installation in any area, this contractor shall examine all parts of the structure on which his work is to be installed. Should any condition be found, in his opinion, will prevent the proper execution of his work, he shall report such conditions in writing to the general contractor. Installation of work shall not proceed in that area until an agreement is reached in how the work will be adjusted to the satisfaction of the general contractor.
B. Coordinate work with that of other trades. Report any errors, omissions or inconsistencies by other trades and request direction before proceeding.
C. Promptly furnish items to be placed during the installation of other work.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Postponement of complete enclosure: If so directed by the jobsite supervisor, installation of the work shall be postponed in any area, so as to facilitate moving material into and out of the building during construction.
B. Qualification of workmen: All work shall be performed by skilled workers, especially trained and experienced in this type of work.
C. Bench marks will be established on each floor by the general contractor but building line offset marks for alignment on each floor has to be established by this contractor. Should any errors be found, this contractor shall notify the construction manager in writing, and installation work will not proceed in the affected areas until the errors have been corrected.
D. Use of sealant materials: Sealing materials shall be applied and used in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s printed instructions and shall be applied only by mechanics specially trained or experienced in their use. Before applying sealing materials, all mortar, dirt, dust, moisture and other foreign matter shall be completely removed from surfaces it will contact. Sealing compounds shall be tooled to fill the joint, evenly contact adjacent surfaces for two sided contact, and have a smooth surface.
E. Anchorage: Anchorage of the work to the structure shall be by approved methods in strict accordance with approved shop drawings and/or erection drawings.
3.3 TOLERANCES
A. Workmanship: All parts of the work shall be erected plumb and true, in proper alignment and relation to established lines and grades, and as shown on approved shop and/or erection drawings.
B. Maximum variation from plane or location shown on approved shop drawings: 1/8” per 12 ‘-0” of length or ½” in any total building length or portion thereof.
C. Maximum offset from true alignment between two members abutting end to end, edge to edge in line or separated by less than 3” shall not exceed 1/32”(shop and/or field joints) This limiting condition shall prevail under no load and full load conditions.
3.4 MANUFACTURER’S FIELD SERVICES
A. This contractor shall provide field surveillance of the installation of work under this section. Any condition or installation at variance from approved shop drawings shall be duly noted and incorporated into the “as built” drawings
3.5 PROTECTION AND CLEANING
A. Protection of the work is the responsibility of this contractor during fabrication, packing and shipping and storing of product at jobsite. The general contract shall provide adequate storage space, per floor, on site, free from damaging elements, excessive dirt cement, mortar and other debris.
B. For work already installed, the general contractor shall assume responsibility for all damage caused by vandalism, theft or other trades. The general contractor shall “sign off” after immediately after installation has been done according to specification to verify that the installation is in like new condition C. After installation is complete by phases, this contractor will clean his material from dirt, and other major objectionable materials brought about during installation; remove his shipping and packing debris to a designated area on each floor daily and leave his installation in a “broom clean” condition. Final cleaning is the responsibility of others.
3.6 MAINTENANCE MANUAL
A. Provide the owner/architect with a bound maintenance manual describing normal and periodic maintenance and cleaning procedures for all major materials.
