15. Ensure towing route has been reviewed with towing team members and is clear of obstructions and foreign objects.
CAUTION
Do not tow aircraft up slopes exceeding five degrees.
16. Immediately before towing an aircraft on or across an active taxiway or runway, the towing team supervisor will obtain clearance from the control tower.
17. If aircraft is to be towed into or out of a hangar, ensure hangar doors are opened a minimum of ten feet, or maximum safe clearance on wing tips.
CAUTION
APU must be shut down prior to aircraft being towed into hangar.
18. When tail and wing walkers are not required, the tow supervisor may ride in the cab or in the seat beside the tow vehicle operator where the supervisor can observe the path to be traversed and direct the actions of the cockpit brake person and the vehicle operator provided communications between the brake person and vehicle operator can be maintained.
E. TOWING PROCEDURES: These procedures must be accomplished step by step.
1. Towing supervisor - check AFTO 781 series forms to determine if aircraft is suitable for towing.
CAUTION
Towing aircraft with nose gear strut extension greater than nine inches could damage centering mechanism.
2. Visually check for landing gear strut extension.

CAUTION
If upper link is not held in up position, ground sensing circuit could shift from ground to flight mode with possible auto extension of slats.
3. If turns greater than 68 degrees are anticipated, disconnect the nose gear torque links, making sure that the upper link is attached to the springs and held in the up position.
WARNING
If the automatic slat extend system circuit breakers are closed, and if the nose landing gear upper torque link is inadvertently moved to down position (ground sensing circuit in the fight mode) there is a possibility that the stall warning system could extend the slats causing injury or death to personnel or structural damage to aircraft.
(a) If nose gear torque links are disconnected, open and tag the following circuit breakers:
CIRCUIT BREAKER PANEL LOCATION PANEL AREA
Auto slat extend Lower Main AC BUS 3 power Auto slat extend Lower Main DC BUS 3 control
WARNING
Tag and safety circuit breakers anytime exiting cockpit circuit breakers area before task completion or there is a delay in maintenance where task cannot be fully accomplished. Failure to comply may cause injury to personnel or damage to aircraft.
WARNING
Failure to place steering bypass valve into the bypass position and install lockpin may result in injury to personnel or damage to equipment
4. Landing gear downlocks, and nose gear steer-ing bypass valve pin - Installed.
