Introduction 1
Landscape Standards Hanscom Air Force Base, MA SECTION 1 | pg. 1
1 Introduction
1.1 Introduction
Hanscom Air Force Base and the 66th Air Base Group, Civil Engineering Directorate has developed this base Landscape Standard as a means to ensure consistent application of a landscape design approach at Hanscom Air Force Base. Hanscom Air Force Base seeks to provide an attractive, low-maintenance landscaping environment that promotes the appearance of the Base and provides a safe and secure environment for
Base residents, employees, and visitors.
These standards are intended to be applied to all types of projects regardless of scope, funding source or construction methodology with the ultimate goal of updating the base landscape over time. This standard, if applied consistently throughout the base will create the landscape environment that Hanscom seeks to develop.
The standards also include design recommendations for existing landscapes at buildings, monuments, and open spaces. The design recommendations identify both landscape removals along with proposed landscape which reflect the overall standards provided within this document.

2 Introduction: Overview and Design
Guideline Standards
2.1 Landscape Design Guideline Standards
The goal of Hanscom Air Force Base is to create an environment that provides for an attractive aesthetic, lower operation and maintenance costs, and to minimize impacts on the environment. These goals will be achieved over time by applying these
Landscape Standards to all aspects of projects completed at Hanscom AFB. These standards will be included as a reference on design projects at the base.
This standard is meant to supplement other criteria with which projects must comply, including the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC), Air Force and DoD policies, requirements and directives. Included within these criteria is UFC 3-201-02 Landscape Architecture which provides a general framework for landscape design for military facilities. This landscape standard supplements UFC 3-201-02 with site specific standards.
Projects associated with buildings or located in proximity to existing buildings must comply with the provisions of Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) 4-010-01 DoD Minimum
Antiterrorism Standards for Buildings. Of particular importance in the Landscape
Design is Standard 2 - Unobstructed Spaces – the concepts set forth in this standard demonstrate the intent to comply with the provisions of UFC 4-010-01 as this is a minimum requirement.
The landscaping will also require that water conservation be a major part of the design criteria. Shade and sun tolerance of the plants, as well as insect, disease and drought resistance have been taken into consideration in these guidelines. The planning and design of all landscaping shall assume that the planting will receive little or no maintenance after a one to two year establishment period.
2.1.1 Tree, Shrub and Groundcover Plantings
This Landscape Standard seeks to identify appropriate plant materials for use at
Hanscom AFB as well as the appropriate application of the landscape materials within particular areas of the base. The goal is to utilize tree, shrub and groundcover plantings to accentuate key areas of the base, including building entrances, monuments, and other features while reducing the operation and maintenance costs of these items.
Section Four of these landscape standards includes a listing of plant materials recommended for use at Hanscom Air Force Base. The list includes regional plant materials that require reduced maintenance within the region. Section Three of this standard includes recommended design concepts for the use of these materials at different locations within the base.

2.1.2 Turf Area Plantings
Turf areas at Hanscom represent a significant element of the current landscape at the base. It is Hansom’s goal to reduce the quantity of manicured turf which requires higher levels of maintenance. The preferred design method for turf areas is to develop a hierarchy of turf types beginning with improved grounds near building entrances transitioning to naturalized/meadow areas transitioning to existing natural landscape/wooded areas. Historically, areas disturbed by building construction were re-established as lawn areas to the limits of the disturbance – this landscape standard identifies a standard that requires that the amount of improved grounds are more limited which will result in reduced maintenance for the base.
2.1.3 Existing Vegetation
Mature vegetation exists in many areas at Hanscom AFB. It is important to Hanscom
AFB that existing vegetation be protected to the maximum extent practical. Mature, healthy trees are to be protected unless feasible alternatives do not exist for the proposed work. Removal of mature, healthy trees must be approved by Hanscom AFB.
2.1.4 Maintenance
A major goal of Hanscom Air Force Base is to reduce the time and cost associated with the maintenance of the landscape at Hanscom AFB. Maintenance efficiency can be achieved through thoughtful design including plant selection, reduction of turf areas and the use of naturalized native turf.
Landscape Planting Concepts and Designs

3 Landscape Planting Concepts and
Designs
3.0 Landscape Design Concepts
Landscape design concepts have been developed to demonstrate planting options at various building types, open space areas and monuments. Each concept is unique, demonstrating a hierarchy of planting types, layout and extent to visually convey the building entrance and relative function. These concepts were developed to guide future planting efforts of newly developed facilities and to guide the redevelopment of plantings at the existing facilities.
Plating types as indicated in the following plans refer to the following guidelines:
TYPE A PLANTINGS: Plants shall not exceed 6” in height and shall be comprised of a combination of groundcovers, perennials and annuals. Provide a variety of material which shall have year round interest through color, texture and density.
TYPE B PLANTINGS: Plants shall not exceed 6” in height and shall be comprised of a combination of groundcovers. Provide a variety of material which shall have year round interest through color, texture and density.
TYPE C PLANTINGS: Plants shall be between 12” and 18” average height comprised of a combination of evergreen and deciduous shrubs. Provide a variety of material which shall have year round interest through color, texture and density.
TYPE D PLANTINGS: Plants shall be between 18” and maximum of 36” average height comprised of a combination of evergreen and deciduous shrubs. Provide a variety of material which shall have year round interest through color, texture and density.
3.1 General Building Landscape Concepts
3.1.1 DESTINATION BUILDINGS
Destination buildings are highly utilized buildings with a frequency of visitors from off-base. They require the highest level of plantings conveying there importance and providing a visually pleasing environment while conveying the primary entrance to the facility.
3.1.2 OPERATION BUILDINGS
Operation buildings are facilities used primarily by on-base personnel requiring a second level of plantings while providing a visually pleasing environment and conveying the primary entrance to the facility.
3.1.3 Industrial Buildings
Landscape Standards Hanscom Air Force Base, MA SECTION 3 | pg. 2
Plantings at the industrial buildings are reduced in overall scope while conveying the primary entrance and developing planting a continuity to the overall Base.
3.2 Specific Building Landscape Designs
Specific building landscape concepts were developed for selected buildings based on the general building landscape concepts. Each proposed building planting has a distinct visual identity while adhering to a unifying Base wide planting design.
3.3 Roadway Edge Area Concepts
The roadway edge areas propose to introduce naturalized plantings to reduce maintenance requirements and provide planting and environmental variety to the Base.
Lawn turf is to be established between first 5’ to 10’ off the curb and the balance is to be seeded with native grasses incorporated into a meadow mix seed mixture
3.4 Tree massing Area Concepts
The tree massing areas propose to introduce naturalized plantings to reduce maintenance requirements and provide planting and environmental variety to the Base.
A meadow mix seed mixture is to be established within groups of selected trees to merge them within a planting island. The balance would remain as a lawn turf.
3.5 Specific Meadow Mix Planting Designs
Specific meadow mix planting designs were developed for selected areas on the base.
Each proposed area planting has a distinct visual identity while adhering to a unifying
Base wide planting design.
3.6 Monument Area Designs
Plantings in these areas compliment the monuments and provide a focus, both while driving in a vehicle and as pedestrian walking the grounds. Strong geometric layouts emphasize the importance of the monuments with their plantings.
