About this file

This is a laboratory test report from the KSC Environmental Microbiology Laboratory documenting air quality analysis conducted at Patrick Space Force Base, Building 559. The report presents results from five air samples collected on November 14, 2025, using Air-O-Cell analysis to quantify fungal spores and particulates by optical microscopy. Samples were collected at 15 liters per minute for 10 minutes each, totaling 150 liters per sample location, from Conference Room 100, RM 201 (Comparison 1), RM 208 (Comparison 2), RM 101 CSS Office, and an outdoor sample for comparison purposes.

The analysis identified total fungal spore concentrations ranging from 60.0 to 746.7 count/m³ across the indoor samples, with the outdoor sample yielding the highest concentration at 746.7 count/m³. The dominant fungal species detected were Aspergillus/Penicillium and Cladosporium, with indoor concentrations substantially lower than outdoor levels. Secondary spore types included Basidiospores, Ascospores, and Curvularia in varying quantities. Other particulates assessed included skin fragments, hyphal fragments, insect fragments, and fibrous particulates, all rated as very low to low levels. The field notes indicate that RM 101 windows were initially open upon arrival and closed approximately one hour prior to sampling, which may have affected results. The report was signed by Environmental Microbiologist Jason Johns on November 19, 2025, with NEMCON Task #T202511-64543 and Lab ID #25-318.

Field Notes:

Air samples were collected using a Zefon Bio-Pump Plus (ZBP-205, Serial 07988) verified at 15/LPM.

(AoC-4) RM 101 windows were open upon arrival and closed about an hour prior to sampling.

High levels of background particulate can obscure spores and other particulates leading to underestimation. Background levels of 5 indicate an overloading of background particulates, prohibiting accurate detection and quantification.

(*Present) = Spores were observed but could not be enumerated due to high background interference.

Identifications were performed at a magnification of 400X. Due to method stopping rules, raw counts more than 200 are extrapolated based on the percentage of trace analyzed. Results are not blank corrected unless otherwise noted.

The minimum detection limit is equal to one fungal spore. Counts/m3 were calculated based on the total volume sampled. Results were rounded to the nearest 0.1 cfu/m3.

( -- ) = Spore Type was not observed in the sample. Not Detected.

KSCEML maintains liability limited to cost of analysis. This report relates only to the samples reported above and may not be reproduced, except in full, without written approval. KSCEML bears no responsibility for sample collection activities or analytical method limitations. Interpretation and use of test results are the responsibility of the client. Samples were received in good condition unless otherwise noted.
