APPENDIX F2A
GUN AND AMMUNITION TEST FACILITY, TA A-22
1.0 PURPOSE. The purpose of the Gun test facility at TA A-22 is to test and evaluate gun system performance and ammunition performance, lifecycle, and ballistic characteristics.
2.0 GENERAL.
2.1. TA A-22 is a complex, highly instrumented test facility designed to collect detailed performance data on all aspects of small caliber (usually 30 mm or less) gun systems and ammunition. Gun firing bays are equipped for static firing a wide variety of weapons, ranging from small handguns to large rapid firing Gatling-type automatic systems. Automatic data systems gather and record critical performance parameters of both guns and ammunition.
2.2. From the vehicle parking ramp, vehicles with internal gun systems or gun pods can be fired from onboard controls to collect projectile dispersion and bore sight information, or to evaluate airframe reaction to firing forces.
2.3. Also located within the boundaries of TA A-22 are the Aeroballistic Test and Evaluation Facility (ATEF) (appendix F2B), the Fuze Evaluation Facility, and a propellant laboratory. The latter two are operated and maintained by the Government.
3.0 CAPABILITIES.
3.1. The Contractor shall operate and maintain the Gun and Ammunition Test Facility located at TA A-22, including:
3.1.1. A fixed mount automatic weapon firing facility (building 410). The facility includes offices, a briefing room, six instrumented firing bays, maintenance facilities, and six concrete target butts.
3.1.2. A vehicle parking ramp designed for onboard gun firings, with a target butt located 300 feet downrange.
3.1.3. An adjacent clear-firing range over land of 6900 feet, plus an impact area over water extending 3 miles into Choctawhatchee Bay.
3.1.4. One CCTV system, including videocassette recorders, cameras with integrated positioning system, position controllers, switcher/controller matrix, monitors, signal modulators, and digital video recording equipment.
3.1.5. One ballistics pressure transducer calibration system, including a high-pressure hydraulic ram, digital voltmeters, charge amplifiers, associated cabling, calibration standards, and operational transducers.
3.1.6. One X-Y scoring system for projectile dispersion. The system includes target area transducer frames and acoustic coupler system including coupler/amplifiers and a power supply contained in a weather-resistant housing.
