SECTION 2: PRODUCT INFORMATION

2.1 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

Action Target's Total Containment Trap (TCT) with the Vortex deceleration chamber is one of the safest, most innovative and durable steel bullet traps on the market.

2.2 SYSTEM COMPONENTS

The hardened steel plates of the TCT are oriented at low angles of impact to direct projectiles through a small aperture and into the Vortex chamber (see Figure 1). Once inside the chamber, the bullet is broken up and decelerated by a series of impact areas oriented at consistent angles of incidence. The Vortex is a projectile containment system, which means that the trap not only stops bullets, but also collects them in a 55-gallon drum via screw conveyor system (BCS Auto 55), 3.5-gallon canisters (BCS Basic 3), or 20-gallon drums (BCS Deluxe 20). When these containers are full, they are removed for recycling.

The low impact angles and sealed chambers of the Vortex greatly reduce the emissions of lead particulates associated with traditional, open-frame steel traps. The Dust Collection Unit (DCU) virtually eliminates airborne particulates.

SAFETY & LIABILITY

Company Confidential – Unauthorized use or distribution prohibited. © 2019 Action Target. All Rights Reserved.

SECTION 3: SAFETY & LIABILITY

3.1 LIABILITY

Action Target does not accept responsibility for damages due to bullet splatter, environmental contamination, or any other damage that arises through the use of the Vortex. Action Target makes no representation whatsoever that the Vortex or any other bullet-catching device will contain 100 percent of splatter or contaminants on a shooting range.

Action Target does not represent the cleanup procedures outlined in this operation and maintenance manual to be inherently safe nor 100 percent effective. These procedures are provided for reference only and outline the absolute minimum safety standards that should be considered. These procedures may need to be combined with other precautions such as respirators or other protective precautions to isolate the operator from lead and/or other contaminants.

3.2 PERSONAL SAFETY

The Vortex is designed to eliminate bullet splatter in the direction of the shooter. However, bullet splatter is not entirely predictable. Some rounds will break into fragments in a regular manner, while other rounds may splatter in unexpected directions. Bullet fragments may strike individuals near surfaces impacted by bullets. This may cause damage to eyes or other exposed areas of the body.

Eye and ear protection is mandatory in any shooting range. Long pants and shirt sleeves also help protect against bullet splatter.

3.3 SHOOTER POSITION

The shooter must not stand directly in front of the trap’s mouth when firing. The range should be designed to ensure the shooter may not stand closer than 10 feet from the trap’s front aperture. Impact from bullet splatter becomes less likely the further the shooter stands from the trap mouth.

Cross-directional shooting may reduce the effectiveness of the Vortex and extreme angles of impact on the trap can cause damage or injury. The potential for damage or injury is greater when using high velocity projectiles. In the case of rifle fire, the trap may be damaged or completely penetrated. The splatter from the round may also be dangerous to other shooters or observers.

It is recommended that the range is oriented so that the majority of projectiles enter the trap on a flat, horizontal trajectory. The closer the point of impact is to the opening of the containment chamber, the more likely it is that lead and other particulates will make it into the containment chamber.

3.4 PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT DURING MAINTENANCE & REPAIR WORK

Wear protective clothing when replacing product parts, including:

§§ Tyvek suit and full face respirator: Wear when servicing the chamber or cleaning the trap.

§§ Metatarsal steel toe shoes: To help prevent a foot injury if a component is dropped.

§§ Gloves: To minimize injury associated with finger pinches when installing product components.

§§ Eye protection: Wear at all times.

§§ Hearing protection: Wear when noise exposure exceeds 85 decibels on the A scale (dBA).

3.4.1 HEAVY LIFTING

When lifting heavy product components, practice proper lifting technique:

1. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart §§ Place one foot slightly in front of the other

2. Squat down §§ Bend at the hips and knees only

3. Maintain good posture §§ Look straight ahead and, keeping your back straight, push your chest out and your shoulders back (this helps keep your upper back straight while creating a slight arch in your lower back)

4. Lift slowly

§§ Tighten your stomach and straighten your hips and knees (not your back) §§ Keep your back straight and do not twist as you lift

5.Hold the load as close to your body as possible
6.Use your feet to change direction and take small steps
7.Lead with your hips as you change direction

§§ Keep your shoulders in line with your hips as you move

8. Squat with your knees and hips only when setting down the load

Avoid:

§§ Bending forward to pick up heavy objects §§ Lifting a heavy object above shoulder level §§ Twisting or turning your body while lifting or holding a heavy object

4.4 USING .50 BMG WITH THE TCT

Although not rated for use on the TCT, Action Target has determined that a LIMITED quantity of .50 BMG ammunition may be used with the TCT.

IMPORTANT! .50 BMG is a high energy ammunition (approximately 11,070 foot-pounds). Use of .50 BMG rounds on the TCT will shorten the life expectancy of trap components and may void the warranty. If .50 BMG rounds are fired onto a concentrated area, damage to the TCT may occur after as few as 50 rounds.

4.4.1 DAMAGE FROM .50 BMG

§§ Damage to or significant lifetime reduction of the deceleration chamber’s mouths (top and bottom).

§§ Breaking of the welds on the deceleration chamber’s mouths and/or ribs.

§§ Significant lifetime reduction of the deceleration chamber’s rear shell.

IMPORTANT! In concentrated areas of fired rounds, failure of the rear shell may occur, resulting in rounds escaping the deceleration chamber.

§§ Loosening of cams due to impact shock forces.

§§ Damage to or significant lifetime reduction of side impact plates.

4.4.2 RESTRICTIONS FOR SHOOTING .50 BMG ON THE TCT:

§§ DO NOT shoot .50 BMG rounds into the TCT from a fixed position. This includes any firing apparatus or position that will place multiple rounds in a very small area.

§§ DO NOT shoot .50 BMG rounds in automatic fire or short burst rounds.

§§ DO NOT shoot .50 BMG rounds that have a steel or solid brass core into the TCT (use of any solid core or “armor piercing” rounds will void the TCT warranty).

§§ DO NOT shoot tracer, incendiary, or armor piercing rounds into the TCT.

§§ DO NOT shoot .50 BMG less than 25 yards away from the TCT.

4.4.3 .50 BMG AMMUNITION RECOMMENDATIONS

§§ Hornady A-Max® Match™ .50 BMG ammunition: match grade, low yaw round.

§§ Engel Ballistic Research .50 BMG frangible ammunition: reduced velocity, low ricochet frangible round.

§§ Alchemist Frangible C3 ammunition: low ricochet, frangible round.

4.4.4 GUIDELINES FOR SHOOTING .50 BMG

§§ Vary the placement of .50 BMG rounds so they are not fired onto a concentrated area of the TCT.

§§ Try to ensure .50 BMG rounds contact the impact plates of the TCT. This will allow for maximum deceleration of the rounds with minimal damage to the impact surfaces.

§§ Designate specific lanes for use with .50 BMG ammunition.

4.4.5 INCREASED INSPECTION CRITERIA FOR TCT TRAPS WHEN SHOOTING .50 BMG:

§§ For .50 BMG range lanes, inspect key TCT components DAILY, including:

a.Baffle plates: Inspect baffle plates for breaches, bulging and wear.
b.Impact plates: Inspect impact plates for breaches, bulging and wear.
c.Chamber mouths: Inspect chamber mouths for breaches and wear. Check that the mouth opening is

between 1” and 1-3/8”.

d.Rear shells: Inspect rear shells plates for bulging, “dimpling” and breaches.
e.Cams: Ensure cams are tight and cam locations marks are in line.

§§ If any damage is found, DO NOT shoot .50 BMG rounds in that lane.

§§ Replacement parts can be purchased from Action Target.

LEAD CONTAINMENT

Company Confidential – Unauthorized use or distribution prohibited. © 2019 Action Target. All Rights Reserved.

SECTION 5: LEAD CONTAINMENT

5.1 VORTEX CONTAINMENT

Bullets break into fragments as they decelerate within the Vortex chamber. These fragments range from large and heavy projectile materials to micron-sized lead dust. The majority of these fragments are collected in the bullet containment system at the base of the chambers.

5.1.1 BULLET CONTAINMENT SYSTEMS

Action Target provides various bullet containment systems (BCS) for easy collection and containment of projectile materials. These systems include:

§§ BCS Basic 3 (3.5-gallon canister system) The BCS Basic 3 is comprised of 3.5-gallon canisters that connect to the base of the TCT Vortex chamber to collect and contain projectile materials. The fill level is visible through the semi-translucent plastic canisters. An integrated air manifold connects to a Dust Collection Unit to generate a negative pressure in the chamber and collect the lead dust created during bullet deceleration.

§§ BCS Deluxe 20 (20-gallon drum system) The BCS Deluxe 20 is comprised of 20-gallon drums that connect to the base of the TCT Vortex chamber to collect and contain projectile materials. An integrated air manifold connects to a Dust Collection Unit to generate a negative pressure in the chamber and collect the lead dust created during bullet deceleration. The drum fill level may be viewed through an acrylic sight window integrated with the drum lid. Each drum is situated on a reusable dolly for easy maneuvering during drum replacement. The BCS Deluxe 20 is only compatible with a 3x5 trap configuration.

§§ BCS Auto 55 (screw conveyor with 55-gallon drum system) The BCS Auto 55 utilizes a U-shaped trough and a powerful helicoid screw conveyor system to collect and move projectile materials away from the trap for safe desposit into a capped 55-gallon drum. An integrated air manifold connects to a Dust Collection Unit to generate a negative pressure in the chamber and collect the lead dust created during bullet deceleration.

The BCS Auto 55 includes a smart monitoring system that monitors the drum fill level and rotation of the screw. This system informs range staff when maintenance is required and shuts down screw operation in the event of a failure.

5.2 SECONDARY CONTAINMENT OPTIONS

The Vortex is a primary containment system only. Not all lead and projectiles reach the chamber as a result of:

§§ Projectiles striking the walls, ground, or other solid objects prior to coming into contact with the bullet trap.

§§ Slight deformation of projectiles upon initial contact with the bullet trap deflector plates.

§§ Ammunition expelling lead particulates and other contaminants directly from the barrel of the gun.

The portion of particulates that do not reach the Vortex chamber eventually settle on the lower deflector plates or on the ground in the surrounding area. Secondary containment is generally required to assure operation is compliant with local, federal, or other environmental standards. Lead emissions into the surrounding environment are prohibited. For outdoor ranges where a large volume of high velocity rounds is fired, a secondary containment system is highly recommended.

5.2.1 DUST COLLECTION UNIT

Action Target provides a Dust Collection Unit (DCU) for minimizing lead emissions. The DCU is a high volume, high pressure vacuum system that evacuates air and particulates from the bullet containment area where the majority of lead particulates are created. This system creates a "net negative pressure" inside the containment chamber, which causes air to flow into the chamber entrance, carrying lead and other particulates as it goes. The DCU then filters the particulates from the air, depositing the

Company Confidential – Unauthorized use or distribution prohibited. © 2019 Action Target. All Rights Reserved.

collected matter into a canister for recycling or disposal. The clean, filtered air is then released into the atmosphere. See Action Target's DCU operation and maintenance manual for more information.

5.3 DRAINAGE AND FILTRATION OF CONTAMINATED WATER

Particularly in the instance of outdoor traps, make sure that rainwater runoff from other parts of the range does not drain toward the trap because lead and other particulates may be picked up by the water and carried into the surrounding environment.

New ranges should be designed so that any water present on the ground in the trap area is contained and then evaporated or filtered prior to being released into the environment. Water present on the ground in other areas of the range should run off the range without passing through the trap area.

Furthermore, rainwater must be prevented from entering the trap chamber. In ranges that use the DCU, any significant volume of water that enters the system can solidify the particulates accumulated on the filters, rendering the filters ineffective. A replacement of filters in the system would also be required.

5.4 WET WASH DOWN OF LEAD PARTICULATES

Some ranges successfully utilize a wet wash down procedure to remove lead and other particulates.

However, the range must be equipped with a catch basin or reservoir to contain the runoff water.

Water must not be released into the environment until it is purified by evaporation, filtration, or settling.

A wet wash down procedure is not recommended on ranges equipped with a DCU because direct introduction of water into the DCU will damage the filters.

SECTION 6: OPERATION

6.1 SEE SECONDARY CONTAINMENT SYSTEM MANUAL

The Vortex is a passive product and does not require any power to operate. However, if the BCS Auto 55 (screw conveyor system) or Dust Collection Unit (DCU) is used, they must be turned on before using the range. Refer to the BCS Auto 55 or DCU manual for specific operational details.

MAINTENANCE

Company Confidential – Unauthorized use or distribution prohibited. © 2019 Action Target. All Rights Reserved.

SECTION 7: MAINTENANCE

Airborne lead is generally present in the area surrounding the bullet trap. Always wait a minimum of 15 minutes after rounds have been fired and collection or ventilation systems have been turned off before entering the trap area. This allows lead dust to settle on the ground where it is easier to collect. Please see section 3.4 for personal protection equipment information.

When in contact with lead fragments and dust, it is recommended that personal protection equipment (PPE) designed for lead protection is worn (e.g. Tyvek suits, full face respirators, eye protection, and foot/hand/head coverings). If entering the trap area, do not kneel or otherwise contact the ground with areas other than the bottom of your shoes. Before leaving the range, always wash hands with soap and water. Shower if possible. Launder clothing as soon as possible.

7.1 RANGE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE AND LOGS

Perform the maintenance procedures listed in following sections of Action Target's Range Maintenance Schedule (check off performed maintenance on your Action Target Range Maintenance Log sheet):

§§ Deceleration Chamber §§ TCT Lead Collection Canisters (if applicable)

Maintenance procedures listed in the Range Maintenance Schedule that require supplementary information are included in this section. For systems with a screw conveyor system, see the BCS Auto 55 operation and maintenance manual.

The maintenance schedule (high or standard) that a range should follow is ascertained by the number of days it takes to fill the lead collection containers (drums or canisters) as outlined in Table 4 below.

Table 4. MAINTENANCE SCHEDULES DETERMINED BY NO. OF DAYS TO FILL THE LEAD CONTAINMENT UNIT

Ranges with a BCS Auto 55 (screw conveyor system): Average time to change a 55 gallon lead collection drum (change when 2/3 full): 1-10 days 11+ days

Ranges with a BCS Basic 03 (“bucket” system): Average time to change a 3.5 gallon lead collection canister (change when filled to 2-gallon mark): 1-20 days 21+ days

Ranges with a BCS Deluxe 20 (20-gallon drum): Average time to change ALL 20-gallon lead collection drums (change when 80% full or when lead is at a depth of 16 inches): 1-90 days 90+ days

Follow maintenance schedule: HIGH STANDARD

Adjust maintenance schedule if range use varies. New ranges should follow the high maintenance schedule until use is determined.

7.2 CHANGING A BCS BASIC 3 LEAD COLLECTION CANISTER (3.5 GALLON)

Containment canisters are semi-translucent, allowing you to easily monitor the accumulation of lead in each canister. Change canisters individually as they reach capacity, or change all canisters when the first canister reaches capacity.

Despite the small canister size, the canister will be heavy when filled with lead. Use a lifting belt, hand truck, or some other lifting device when removing canisters.

You will need:

§§ Canister lid §§ Hammer

Instructions:

1. Slide a pallet or similar support underneath the canister ensuring there is a slight gap (approx. 1/4”) between the support and the bottom of the canister.

2. Loosen the two nuts on the canister clamps (the nuts are visible from the access area). Do not loosen the nuts on the opposite (front) side of the chamber. Pull the canister clamp towards you until the nut and washer clear the evacution port. The bucket will tilt down towards the support underneath.

3. Slide the canister away from the trap and immediately place the lid on the canister. Use a hammer to pound the lid into place until it is tightly sealed.

Do not attempt to carry or transport the canister without the lid in place.

4.Replace the canister with an empty canister.
5.Reinstall the clamps, ensuring the clamps "lock" under the reinforced area of the rim (where the

handle attaches to the canister) as seen in Figure 2.

6. Tighten the clamps to draw the new canister up tightly against the flange.

If the clamps are not tight, the seal will not be maintained as the canister becomes heavy with the weight of the lead.

7.3 CHANGING A BCS DELUXE 20 LEAD COLLECTION DRUM (20 GALLON)

BCS Econo 20 systems are equipped with a sight glass in the evacuation hopper lid. This allows range users to monitor the accumulation of lead in the drum. Change drums individually as they reach capacity (80% full or a lead depth of 16 inches) or change all drums when the first drum reaches capacity.

You will need:

§§ 20-gallon DOT drum lid and ring - one (1) per drum §§ Standard size pallet (48” x 42” minimum) - one (1) for every 4 drums §§ Drum transfer equipment (see below)

Instructions:

1. Referring to Figure 3, undo the latch on the lid clamp, remove the rear half of the lid clamp and set aside. Pull drum out from underneath chamber.

Figure 3. LID CLAMP DISCONNECTED FROM DRUM

2.Install drum lid and clamp ring on drum.
3.Move drum to transfer area on drum dolly.

Never move a full drum without drum lid and clamp ring installed. The 20-gallon drums weigh approximately 500 lbs when 80% full. Use caution when moving drums on the dolly to avoid tipping the drum, which could damage the drum or dolly and result in lead contamination.
