About this file

This is a structural analysis report prepared by CADJAZZ Engineering Consultants for Traffic Planning & Design, Inc., detailing the design and analysis of four prestressed concrete strain poles (Type PVII) and support cables for the Beresford Avenue Extension Phase 2B project in Volusia County, Florida, spanning from S. Kepler Road/Dr. MLK Beltway to SR 44. The report provides comprehensive structural analysis using the ATLAS V7.2 design program in accordance with FDOT Structures Manual (2026) specifications and AASHTO LRFD standards. The design incorporates a 140 mph wind speed (300-year recurrence interval per FDOT standards), includes two cable systems (a 7/16" catenary cable and a 1/2" messenger cable), and addresses signal mounting, lighting fixtures, and traffic control requirements. Four poles are designed with 6-inch backplates for signal heads, with spans ranging approximately 1,500 to 1,800 inches between poles. The analysis examines multiple load combinations including dead load only and combined dead load with wind load conditions (Load Combination 1 and 2), with the design controlling at 1.10 times dead load plus 1.00 times wind load for LRFD Extreme Event I conditions.

The structural design confirms that all four poles meet capacity requirements, with Poles 1 and 2 each requiring approximately 12.7 to 12.8 feet of embedment length (exceeding the 9-foot minimum for Type PVII poles), while Poles 2 and 3 (in the SP2-SP3 span analysis) require approximately 13.6 to 14.1 feet of embedment. The catenary cable system is designed with a 0.438-inch diameter (0.116 square inch area) with factored resistance of 9.0 kips, while the messenger cable features a 0.500-inch diameter (0.150 square inch area) with factored resistance of 12.5 kips. Resultant base moments range from approximately 215 to 290 kip-feet depending on pole location and load combination. Soil conditions assume cohesionless fine sand with a 30-degree friction angle and 50 pounds per cubic foot unit weight per contract GEC Contract 22-SQ-172SR/Newkirk Project #P-5852. All design calculations demonstrate structural adequacy under the prescribed loading conditions, with concrete strength specified at 6,000 psi and pole material properties varying by effective height.

Design Criteria

AASHTO LRFD Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and Traffic Signals (LRFDLTS-1); Structures Manual (SM), Volume 3, FDOT Modifications to LRFDLTS-1; Structures Manual (SM)Introduction, I.6 References; FDOT Design Manual (FDM)

Design Assumptions and Limitations

See FDM 261 and Structures Manual (SM),Volume 3 for additional design criteria.

The following computer-based design program is available for use on the Structures Design Office Website:

University of Florida Bridge Software Institute ATLAS

Program v7 or higher. For Pole Types P-III through P-VIII, design poles within the following limits:

30 ft. ≤ Length (L) ≤ 65 ft.

Pole Height (H) ≤ 50 ft.

Foundations may be designed assuming a 3’-6” diameter (See Specification 641). The foundation depths for the following poles must be designed but may be no shallower than the following minimums:

Pole Types P-III through P-V 7 feet

Pole Types P-VI 8 feet

Pole Types P-VII through PVIII 9 feet Foundations are designed using the following soil criteria:
