About this file
This document is a Safety Guidelines exhibit for visitors working at the Laboratory Services Division, a facility conducting biological and chemical research and routine laboratory testing in Colorado. The guidelines establish mandatory safety protocols that all visitors must follow prior to and during their work assignments within laboratory areas. Visitors are prohibited from handling biological samples or chemicals, eating or drinking outside designated break areas, touching laboratory equipment, or loitering in hazardous material zones. The document provides detailed instructions regarding the identification and avoidance of biohazard and chemical/toxic hazard warning symbols, with specific prohibitions against collecting or emptying trash containers marked with these labels. All visitors must meet with a unit supervisor or designee to discuss area-specific safety practices and personal protective equipment requirements before entering any laboratory.
The guidelines require that all work in laboratories be performed in the presence or under surveillance of an escort who can provide immediate assistance in the event of observed threats from hazardous materials or emergency situations such as fire alarms or severe weather warnings. The document emphasizes that while the quantities of biological samples and chemical materials used in the laboratories are small and will not cause harm if proper safety protocols are followed, maintaining awareness of warning symbols and adherence to established guidelines is critical. All visitors must sign an acknowledgment form indicating they have read and understood these safety instructions before beginning their work assignments.

SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR VISITORS WORKING AT THE LABORATORY
SERVICES DIVISION
The safety and security of our staff and visitors is the number one priority of the Laboratory Services Division. Upon arrival, at our campus, please meet with the Supervisor or designee of the unit in which you will be working to discuss area-specific safety practices and personal protective equipment needs prior to entering any laboratory.
During your work assignments you may be entering laboratories where biological samples and chemicals are used or stored. These materials are used by our facility for research and routine laboratory testing. You are not permitted to handle any biological samples or chemicals.
General rules of safety for all laboratories include:
Eating, drinking, taking medications, and application of cosmetics; including: the application of lip balm. Eating and drinking are only permitted in break and common areas.
Do not touch laboratory equipment.
Do not loiter in areas where biological or chemicals are used or stored.
Do not empty trash containers containing biohazard-labeled plastic bags, or labeled with biological, or chemical/toxin hazard symbols that are illustrated below.
Do report to our staff any containers with biological samples or chemicals that you observe in regular trash baskets.
It is important to remember that the quantity of samples, materials and products used in the laboratories is small and will not harm you if you recognize warning symbols and follow appropriate safety guidelines:
BIOLOGICAL HAZARD
This is the warning symbol for a biological hazard (biohazard). This means that there are materials present that are either infectious or have been in contact with infectious materials. Do not collect any trash bags that are red or have this label on them.

This is the warning symbol for a chemical or toxin hazard. This means that liquids, powders, gases and instruments are present which could cause injuries such as burns, poisoning, breathing difficulties, blindness, or death.
These classes of hazardous materials may be present in any of the laboratories. Perform your work in the laboratories in the presence or surveillance of an escort. If you observe any potential threat from these materials, immediately alert your escort.
In the event of a fire alarm, severe weather warning or other alert, follow the instructions of your escort to either seek shelter or to evacuate the building.
Thank you for helping us to maintain a safe working environment!
