Installing files associated with Exams Software There are four programs used for CSE/IM data collection and for cleaning and loading data into FSVeg.

• ExamsPC is the Exams software program that runs on the PC. It is used for creating template files and cleaning data prior to loading into FSVeg. Data may be entered using Exams PC in the office, but it is preferred to enter data in the field using a Personal Data Recorder (PDR) and using ExamsPDR software.

• ExamsPDR is the data collection software program that runs on several makes and models of Portable Data Recorders (PDRs). The ExamsPDR program is specific to the PDR make and model you are using.

ExamsPDR and Exams PC use the same template and data files.

• DbLoader is the software program used to load data into FSVeg. This runs from the Exams PC interface and is automatically downloaded with the Exams software executable.

• PreAudit is the Region 1 Pre-load Data Audit software program that checks stand exam data for errors prior to loading data into FSVeg. There is also a National version pre-audit that checks collected data against the sample design. Data needs to be checked against both versions of pre-audit. This executable is obtained separately from the R1 Forest Inventory and Analysis website. It does not come with Exams.

Obtaining Data Recorders If you do not have access to functioning data recorders, please contact the RO Inventory Specialist if you would like to use some. The region has a check out system so forests can borrow data recorders and accessories to meet their inventory needs.

Note: Juniper Systems Allegro CX, MX, and Allegro 2 data recorders are the only Allegro models still supported in Region One. Dual Boot machines are no longer supported nationally or regionally. Juniper Systems no longer supports Allegro CX, so units should consider transitioning to newer models as soon as possible.

S 3-3

These following steps are for Windows 7 and Windows 10 computers. If you have a Windows XP operating system, follow the instructions in the national FSVeg Common Stand Exam User Guide Chapter 3: Installing the Exams Software (page 3-3, step 1).

Loading necessary Software Follow these instructions until prompted to use Chapter 3 of the National Manual.

1.1 Use Microsoft Internet Explorer to access Exams software and other software products that are required for its use.

FS employees: http://fsweb.nrm.fs.fed.us/applications/fsveg/PDR/install.shtml Contractors: http://www.fs.fed.us/nrm/fsveg/

1.2 Determine if NRM Client and/or JRE are installed

These are prerequisites for NFS employees only, contractors DO NOT need this software.

Windows 7: Select Start> Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, then look for NRM Client, Java 8 Update XX (where XX is an update number), and Windows Mobile Device Center.

• If your computer already has these programs, skip to 1.5.

• FS employees need Java, but private contractors don’t need it.

Windows 10: Type “apps & features” into the search bar near the windows icon on your screen. This will bring up Apps & Features in the match list. Click on Apps & Features.

The FS periodically releases new versions of JRE (Java), so the update number will be different than shown.

http://fsweb.nrm.fs.fed.us/applications/fsveg/PDR/install.shtml http://www.fs.fed.us/nrm/fsveg/

S 3-4

Scroll down through the list to see if you have Java 8 Update 202 and Java 8 Update 202 (64-bit) and NRM Client and Windows Mobile Device Center and the Windows Mobile Device Center Driver Update and WmdcFixesWin10.

1.3 Install NRM Client and JRE (if they are not installed)

Under PC/Laptop Prerequisites on the NRM CSE Portable Data Recorder Application Installation webpage (link in step 1.1), download the NRM Client, install, then download Java and install . Follow the instructions on the webpage you opened in step 1.1.

When installing these applications, SAVE them to your computer (instead of running).

Right click the executable that has downloaded and select Run Elevated.

S 3-5

Enter NRM as a justification. This will allow the software to be loaded onto your computer.

1.4 Load Windows Mobile Device Center

Note: even if you do not plan on plugging a PDR to your laptop, this software must be loaded.

2019 WARNING: If you have already installed Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) on your computer and you get a “RAPl.dll file was not found”, error message when starting the ExamsPC software, then your WMDC may have been corrupted and will need to be uninstalled and reinstalled with the latest version.

Click the Windows icon on your computer to expand your list of programs. Scroll down in the list until you find PowerBroker. Click the arrow to the right to expand the list of PowerBroker options. Click the PowerBroker – Uninstall or Change a Program option to open the Uninstall or change a program page within PowerBroker. All of the software programs that are currently installed on your computer including the version number and date of installation will be listed.

Scroll to the bottom of the list of programs until you find Windows Mobile Device Center. If you do have WMDC on your computer, you will need to uninstall WMDC and then reinstall it.

To uninstall right click on Windows Mobile Device Center and you will have the option to Repair or Uninstall the program. Click Uninstall. When it asks you to confirm uninstalling Windows Mobile Device Center, choose Yes.

Now you are ready to install a new copy of Windows Mobile DevicCenter.

To install WMDC go to https://www.fs.fed.us/nrm/fsveg/#software and follow the instructions below for loading WMDC. You can skip step 1.5, but you will need to edit your sqlnet.ora file by following step 1.6. You may also need to download the WMDC-fixes-for-Win10.msi in step 1.7B from the Juniper website in order for your PDR to connect to your laptop.

https://www.fs.fed.us/nrm/fsveg/#software

S 3-6

To reinstall WMDC follow the instructions below for installing WMDC. See step 1.2 to check if you have Windows Mobile Device Center on your computer. If Windows Mobile Device Center is in your program list, skip to step 1.5, unless it has been corrupted, then see the prior note in this section. You will need to edit your sqlnet.ora file by following step 1.6. You may also need to download the WMDC-fixes-for-Win10.msi in step 1.7B from the Juniper website in order for your PDR to connect to your laptop.

If Windows Mobile Device Center (WMCD) is NOT on your computer, it can be downloaded from:

http://fsweb.nrm.fs.fed.us/applications/fsveg/PDR/install.shtml.

Select the link to the Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) under Synchronization Software

1. Download it (SAVE) to your desktop first,

2. Right-click the downloaded drvupdate-amd64.exe select Run Elevated and load the software.

WARNING: WMDC can take a LONG time to install; if you see only the Driver Update, wait at least another 15 minutes and it should appear. If it doesn’t, connect your PDR and fire up ExamsPC – if ExamsPC opens successfully, WMDC has installed.

Note: this software will look like it did not completely load unless your PDR is plugged into your computer but it will finish when you do plug in a device.

1.5 Load Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable

This software is needed if you will be loading inventory data into FSVeg using ExamsPC’s DBLoad program.

This software needs to be downloaded because it is no longer included with the basic FS computer image.

Obtain the software by clicking the link titled vcredist_x86.exe found on http://fsweb.nrm.fs.fed.us/applications/fsveg/PDR/install.shtml.

1. Save the software to your desktop.

2. Right-click the icon and choose run elevated.

3. Enter any word at least 3 letters long into the justification field.

4. Follow the prompts to install the package.

A sign that you need Microsoft Visual C++: You’ll get a “side-by-side configuration” error.

http://fsweb.nrm.fs.fed.us/applications/fsveg/PDR/install.shtml https://www.fs.fed.us/nrm/documents/fsveg/pdr/vcredist_x86.exe

S 3-7

1.6 Edit your sqlnet file.

Follow the instructions on the Common Stand Exams software website at http://fsweb.nrm.fs.fed.us/applications/fsveg/PDR/install.shtml under the bullet item sqlnet – Edit your sqlent.ora file.

*If you have Windows 10, you will not be able to access the notepad through the Start menu. Type notepad into the search field near the windows icon on your desktop.

Search for Notepad in Windows 10

1.7 Download Patch for Portable Data Recorders that do not have Windows Mobile 7 Windows Mobile Device Center (on PC) was designed to run with Windows Mobile 7 (on PDR).

None of the PDRs currently used in R1 for stand exams have a Windows Mobile 7 operating system. Fortunately, Microsoft has released a patch to Windows Mobile Device Center that allows it to work with Windows CE (found on Allegro CX), Windows Mobile 6.1 (found on most Allegro MX), and other mobile operating systems. If this patch is already installed on your computer, a pop-up will give the user the choice to repair the existing version or delete the existing version. There is no need to update the patch.

Download the patch from: T:\FS\Reference\GeoTool\r01\Application\Win7Mobile. Copy the T:\FS\Reference\GeoTool\r01\Application\Win7Mobile\WMDCv61_drvupdate-amd64.exe file to your C:\tmp folder and then right click and choose run elevated. The installation should prompt you to connect your mobile device. If you do not have your device handy do not worry, just finish the installation and the first time you connect your mobile device it will complete the installation.

Note: Before installing the patch, all devices (PDR, camera, GPS, etc.) need to be unplugged from computer.

1.7 B. Windows 10 - Download Windows Mobile Device Center fix for

S 3-8

Go to the Juniper Systems help page for WMDC in Windows 10 at: http://www.junipersys.com/Juniper-Systems- Rugged-Handheld-Computers/support/Knowledge-Base/Support-Knowledge-Base-Topics/Desktop-Connection- ActiveSync-or-Windows-Mobile-Device-Center/WMDC-in-Windows-10.

Scroll down to WMDC-fixes-for-Win10.msi under Feb 2018 and Save it to your computer.

Navigate to your downloads folder by typing “downloads” into the search field. Right click on WMDC-fixes-for-Win10.msi. Run Elevated. Shut down and restart your computer. Shut down and restart your PDR. Your PDR should now be able to connect to your computer.

1.8 Download ExamsPC and ExamsPDR software;

Go to the NRM Common Stand Exam, Portable Data Recorder Application Installation webpage at:

http://fsweb.nrm.fs.fed.us/applications/fsveg/PDR/install.shtml to access all Exams software.

If you will be using ExamsPC and moving ExamsPDR from your PC to PDRs, download the software based on the device you will be using in the field.

If you are only using ExamsPC or only need a new version of ExamsPC, follow the directions for downloading ExamsPC, below.

Download Exams software bundle. Click the link in the Device column of the CSE PDR FSVeg Software by Device table that matches your handheld device. When downloading the Exams package associated with your PDR, ExamsPC is included in the download, so there is no need to download them both separately.

Click Save in the pop-up window.

The file will download to your Downloads folder.

http://www.junipersys.com/Juniper-Systems-Rugged-Handheld-Computers/support/Knowledge-Base/Support-Knowledge-Base-Topics/Desktop-Connection-ActiveSync-or-Windows-Mobile-Device-Center/WMDC-in-Windows-10 http://www.junipersys.com/Juniper-Systems-Rugged-Handheld-Computers/support/Knowledge-Base/Support-Knowledge-Base-Topics/Desktop-Connection-ActiveSync-or-Windows-Mobile-Device-Center/WMDC-in-Windows-10 http://www.junipersys.com/Juniper-Systems-Rugged-Handheld-Computers/support/Knowledge-Base/Support-Knowledge-Base-Topics/Desktop-Connection-ActiveSync-or-Windows-Mobile-Device-Center/WMDC-in-Windows-10

S 3-9

Once the file has been downloaded, Downloads will appear under the Location section. Select Downloads and the folder will open up.

In the downloads folder, right click the most recent yourPDR_win7_vxx.xx.20xx.exe executable file and select Run Elevated.

Type in a justification that is at least 3 letters long. This will install the program. Do not change the “Unzip to folder:” location, click UNZIP.

Do NOT put this executable anywhere other than directly on the C:\ drive – or you’ll create multiple copies of the Exams folder and ALL SORTS OF REALLY UNPLEASANT PROBLEMS

WILL ARISE.

S 3-10

Allow the folder to unzip the file in the C:\ folder by clicking Unzip (do not change the default location for the Exams folder to unzip). Leave the Overwrite files without prompting box checked. This will allow replacement of your out of date version of ExamsPC, ExamsPDR, and the associated default template files distributed in C:/Exams/stdexams/region_templates. This will not overwrite any personal template files or data files that currently reside in the Exams folder.

Note: If you are using more than one model of PDR (not recommended), you will need to download a version of ExamsPC for each PDR model you are running. These should be stored in separate folders. Be aware that Juniper Allegro now has four models of data recorders that look the same, but use different versions of ExamsPDR software. This could cause a lot of extra work in management of the PDRs and associated data over the field season.

Close out of Explorer by selecting the x in the upper right corner of the window.

Note: If you only need to update your ExamsPC version then scroll to the bottom of the webpage and click on the examspc_win7_vxx.xx.xxxx.exe link. Follow the instructions above, section 2.0 using the link at the bottom of the page rather than in the PDR table, to load the software.

1.9 Check that the software has loaded correctly:

Click on Start/Computer Double-click Local Disk (C:)

Double-click on the Exams folder.

If ExamsPC_win7.exe and ExamsPDR.exe are in C:\Exams and the dates have been updated to match the file date on the intranet site, the software has loaded successfully. If you do not use Run Elevated, the software will appear to load, but it will not actually load.

1.10 Create shortcut to ExamsPC on your desktop, If you do not have a shortcut on your desktop then, Select ExamsPC_win7.exe and right click.

Choose Send To>Desktop (create shortcut). This will create an ExamsPC shortcut icon on your Desktop.

Later, if you notice some truly weird behavior in ExamsPC – one classic symptom is damage codes appearing in the EV Code LOV – the problem is most likely that you’ve got multiple copies of ExamsPC on your machine and the one you’re running was filed in the wrong spot. You will need to hunt all of these down (hopefully, there’s only one) and delete them.

S 3-11

1.11 Start ExamsPC Software

The first time that you start ExamsPC software (after unzipping a new executable), from C:\Exams, right click on ExamsPC and choose Run Elevated.

This ensures that ExamsPC “remembers” the datafile that you are working with and does not always prompt you for a regional template file every time you open the program.

From your Desktop, double click on Exams PC icon.

1.12 Common Stand Exam Option in ExamsPC

When ExamsPC is opened the first time, it will be in Common Stand Exam mode, the background of the home window is red and “Common Stand Exam Software for Windows” displays on the screen as seen below. This option should be used when entering common stand exam data. The first time the program opens, it will start in the common stand exam mode. Always select the Common Stand Exam option. Contact the R1 Analysis Team if you wish to use the Inventory and Monitoring option.

When using the Inventory and Monitoring option of ExamsPC and the template file has the “.im” extension, it will cause Exams software to go into the IM mode (home screen background is blue). If you are in the wrong mode, for the Exams template or data file that you are working with, go to File and select Use CSE Option from the drop down menu, or open a R1 template file with “.cse” as the extension. NOTE: once you open up a “.cse” file in the IM mode, a new datafile, with the “.im” extention will automatically be created. If this is in error, you will want to delete the file so you are not confused in the future.

ExamsPC in Common Stand Exam Mode (note the file extension of .cse)

S 3-12

Data are saved to the “.cse” file that is currently open. After exiting the Exams software, the last “.cse” file saved will automatically open the next time the Exams software is started.

S 3-13

1.13 Inventory and Monitoring Option in ExamsPC (IM)

The inventory and monitoring option in ExamsPC is for use with inventory data that will be remeasured over time, such as intensified grid data, or old growth monitoring plots. When Exams is in Inventory and Monitoring mode, the home screen will be blue and display “Inventory and Monitoring Software for Windows” in yellow lettering.

There are two ways to launch the inventory and monitoring option in ExamsPC. One is to go to File/Use IM Option and the other is to open any “.im” file to automatically change to the .im options.

The inventory and monitoring option is only to be used with “.im” files because there are different variables available for use in the inventory and monitoring option than in the common stand exam option, examples include witness tree information and travel directions. The tree distance and azimuth fields are required when using the inventory and monitoring option in order to pair measured trees from one measurement to the next. Contact the R1 Analysis Team if you wish to use the Inventory and Monitoring option.

ExamsPC in Inventory and Monitoring Option:

S 3-14

Set up an Exams Template File See the R1 Supplement to Chapter 2: Preparation and Design, Determine File Management System section for information on setting up folders for your Exams Template and Datafiles that are collected over the field season.

Once the CSE/IM protocols have been determined for the inventory project, a template file for Exams software is created. This template will set the fields that are displayed in Exams for data collection, determine whether they are required or not, provide default values in the Setting Form, and set the list of values that are available for various attributes. It is important to build your Exams software template off of an R1 Template file. These regional template files are located in C:\Exams\stdexams\region_templates.

2.1 Choose a “base” R1 Template file from C:\Exams\stdexams\region_templates Always start with an R1 template file, either for western MT/north ID or eastern MT. These templates already have certain information set within the template file. They contain logic checks and potential vegetation manuals imbedded that are appropriate for the geographic area of interest (eastern MT and western MT/northern ID).

Changes are occasionally made to the R1 templates distributed through the Exams software executable. You can find these in the region_templates folder in your ExamsPC on your C-drive (C:\Exams\stdexams\region_templates), see below.

The Field Protocol specialist may have a default template file that is similar to your project needs, such as old growth exam templates that will require less modifications than the regional template files. If you need assistance with building a template file or would like someone to review the template file you have created, contact the R1 Field Protocol Specialist.

From ExamsPC software, select “File/Open”. In the navigation pane on the left side of the pop-up: use the down arrow (if necessary) to choose Local Disk (C:). Double-click on the “EXAMS” folder, then on the “STDEXAMS” folder, then on the “region_templates” folder. Double-click on the file containing the Regional template you want to select.

This file will now be shown in the window title (top) of the ExamsPC window. A window will pop up to indicate the current file you are working on.

Prior to creating the template file, save the template file that you are creating in your project’s folder with the name of your project so you do not overwrite a Region 1 template file and it is saved in a standard location.

Select “File” then “Save As.”

S 3-15

Migrate the “Save as” window to point to the “C:\exams\stdexams\”your project name”\template folder.

Give the template file a name that provides project identification information, such as OldGrowth2016_template, and save it with the .cse extension if you are going to be doing standard exams. If you will be putting in permanent plots, to revisit and monitor vegetation over time, then you may want to use Inventory and Monitoring protocols, and the .im extension. Contact the R1 Vegetation Analysis Team if considering this option. It is not recommended to use the .pdr extension.

In the “File name” window, type in a meaningful file name such as “project_name_template.cse.” The .cse or .im suffix must be selected.

A template file is created by using the options under Setup. User Definitions, Field Selections, Sample Design, and Growth Sample Tree Guidelines if GST data is being collected, should each be edited.

S 3-16

Do not use a template created before February 2011 because Exams software has been updated and it will not work correctly with the current version.

See the following overview of how to open, copy, and save a template file to start building a project template without accidentally overwriting your original R1 template:

From ExamsPC, use File/Save As to:

• Place the template in a folder where templates for stand exams are kept for this project. It is recommended to use the following naming convention: C:\Exams\stdexams\”your projectname” \template

• Once the template file has been created. Save a copy of it in C:\Exams\stdexams\”your projectname” with a name that is appropriate for data collection.

2.2 Set up User Definitions in the template file.

The User Definitions set default values or a list of values for various attributes. The User Definitions screen allows you to select defaults and insert choices that will be displayed in the various drop-down lists of the Exam software.

To access the User Definitions interface go to Setup/User Definitions.

Open the regional template file that you want to use as a base template file. This will be further modified to be your project template file.

S 3-17

Setup Dropdown Menu Screenshot

When first going into the User Definitions interface, you will get:

This is usually not important unless you are planning on collecting Species of Management Interest for the setting. If so, Species of Management Interest will need to be listed.

The User Definitions Form

S 3-18

The following attributes are commonly set as defaults in the User Definitions.

Attribute Proclaimed Forest Ranger District Project Names State County (set Default or pick list) Administrative Forest Examination Level Purpose Codes Potential Veg. Reference Potential Veg. Codes (Pick list of habitat type codes found in your area) Precision Protocol Magnetic Declination (set when using IM protocols)

In general, the Veg Species are not updated from the base template file. However, there are times when additional species need to be made available in the pick list since all species entered into Exams must be on the selected TAXA list or they cannot be collected in Exams. For directions on making individual plant species available in a Template or Datafile, see the R1 CSE/IM Field Guide Section 12.2 Editing a Template for detailed instruction on adding individual plant species. All plant species codes used are from TAXA.

2.3 Set Field Selections

Field Selections allows the user to determine which attributes will be shown on the Plot Data, Tree Data, and Vegetation Composition, and Down Woody Forms and collected in the field. See R1 CSE/IM Field Guide, Section 1.1 Region 1 Required Fields. When starting with a Region 1 template file, the fields selected are the requirements for R1 stand exams. You may choose to add items, but you should not remove attributes.

From the Exams Main Menu, select Setup/Field Selections

Field Selection Forms The function of buttons (that are enabled) for the Field Selection Forms are described below:

• Selected – Selected fields are displayed on the plot form.

• Required – A field must first be “selected” before it can be “required.” Required fields are checked upon exit of the plot form. An error message appears on the screen if a required field is left blank.

• Duplicate Row – A field must first be “selected” before it can be “duplicated.” When a new line in the form is created, the value from the previous line is duplicated. The duplicated values may be overwritten.

• Help – If clicked, a bit of information about the Field Selection Form will appear on the screen.

S 3-19

• Back – If clicked, this button takes you to the previous Field Selection Form. This button does not work when in the Plot Field Selection Form.

• Next – If clicked, this button takes you to the next Field Selections Form. This button does not work when in the Vegetation Composition Field Selection Form.

• Cancel – Use this button to exit the Field Selection screen and delete all changes made since the last “Save” command.

• Save – Click on this button to save all edits that have been made since the last “Save” command. Edits must be saved before Return, Next, and Back are enabled.

• Return – Click on this button to close the Field Selection screens and return to the Main Menu.

2.4 Plot Data Field Selection:

Use the Setup>Field Selections>Plot Form screen to select the fields to be displayed on the Plot Data Form. Click in the appropriate table cell to toggle the selection as “on” or “off.”

The Regional Template files have the minimum required fields selected according to R1 Common Stand Exam Protocols.

When finished, select “Next” to move to the Tree Data Form Field Selection section.

Tree Data Field Selection:

The fields to be “selected,” “required,” and “duplicated” can be chosen by each of the three exam types: Quick Plot Exam, Extensive Exam, and Intensive Exam. Click in the appropriate table cell to toggle the selection as “on” or “off.” Depending on the examination type, some of the fields will be pre-selected and required. The Regional Templates already have the minimum fields, by exam level selected.

Click on the appropriate exam tab (Quick, Extensive, or Intensive) at the top of the screen prior to choosing fields for the specific exam type. Only modify the tree data field selections under the exam level used for the exam.

SAVE the selections for the exam type modified before moving on to the next data form.

S 3-20

Vegetation Data Field Selection:

Choose the fields that will be recorded in the selected column by the vegetation exam type: Cover by Lifeform or Cover by Species. Click on the appropriate exam tab at the top of the screen (Cover by Lifeform or Cover by Species), and then click in the appropriate table cell to toggle the selection as “on” or “off”, all of the optional lifeforms are not used in Region 1 (R1 only uses standard lifeforms of trees, shrubs, forbs, and grass). Depending on the examination type, some of the fields will be pre-selected and required. Note: “Cover by Species and Layer” form is not used in Region 1.

SAVE the selections in each exam type before moving on to the next tab.

S 3-21

Only edit the Field Selections for the Forms you will be using to collect data and the Exam Level of the Tree Form you will be collecting.

2.5 Set Default Sample Design

Based on the specifications of your inventory, open and update the sample designs for the forms that data will be collected on.

From the Main Menu, select Setup/Sample Designs The most commonly used sample designs can be set as the default. A default sample design can be stored for each of the Tree Data, Vegetation Composition, Ground Surface Cover, and Down-Woody Materials Forms.

It is imperative that the sample design form is set up correctly prior to going into the field. Refer to R1 CSE/IM Field Guide, Section 3 (Sample Design Form) and see the examples listed in R1 CSE/IM Field Guide Supplemental Appendix B (Example Sample Designs) to ensure sample designs are written correctly.

Sample Design Example Tree data for this example is collected using both variable (BAF) and fixed (FRQ) radius plots:

40 BAF plot to survey live and dead standing trees with a DBH of 5.00 inches and larger.

1/300th acre plot to survey live and dead standing trees with a DBH of 0.01 to 4.99 inches DBH 1/300th acre plot to survey live standing trees with a height of 0.5 to 4.49 feet

Edit the Default Sample Design form under the appropriate tab (Tree, Veg. Composition, Ground Surface Cover, or Down-woody Material).

The values in the default sample design will be automatically copied to new stand exams you create after saving it. It won’t be saved to stand exams that already exist on the PDR or on your PC. It is necessary to go back into any stand exams saved prior to making sample design changes to apply the new default sample design.

Down-woody Materials:

2.6 Tree Audit Check Form

From the main menu, select Setup/Tree Audit Check Form

This form facilitates automatic checking routines to verify tree data is not outside the user specified range of allowable data. All Region 1 Default files available through the Exams software have the Audit Check form values set for values appropriate for Western Montana / Northern Idaho and Eastern Montana. Most of these are based off of relationships documented in the Inland Empire and Eastern Montana variants of FVS. Maximum diameter, height, radial and height growth, and age relationships can be customized based on forest data/needs.

Consult your forest silviculturist if you wish to modify this form. Additional information on the function of this form is found in the National FSVeg/CSE User Guide, Chapter 3, Step 4.22 – 4.23.

Refer to R1 CSE/IM Field Guide, section 12.2.6 in Editing a Template in Exams for instruction on editing Growth Sample Tree Guidelines if needed.

2.8 Creating a Datafile

After you have created a template file, it should be saved to C\Exams\stydexams\”your projectname”\template.

This file is then ready to become a datafile. From the ExamsPC interface, select File/Save as, migrate to C\Exams\stdexams\”your projectname” and name the file something meaningful for data collection for example OldGrowth2016_PP16.cse. This datafile will then be moved to a PDR, using ExamsPC, prior to collecting data in the file. NOTE: you may want to be sure to save a copy in a meaningful place in Pinyon.

Connecting to An Allegro MX or Allegro 2 Without a Cradle Allegro MXs and Allegro 2s come with a USB cable, the standard USB side plugs into any USB port on a PC while the mini, or micro USB side connects to the top of the Allegro. Note that it is possible to still use a serial cable; however, the USB connection is many times faster.

Allegro MXs come shipped with ActiveSync 4.5, it is important that this version is used to make a connection.

Note that this version of active sync also works with Allegro CX and most of the Trimble Geo X(X) model GPS units.

Note that if serial cables are used, as with Allegro CXs, be sure “Allow connections to one of the following:

COM1” is checked. You will need to call CHD to get administrator privileges in order to make this change.

Once these steps have been taken, Windows Mobile Device Center can be closed, connect the USB cable and a connection will automatically be made between the Allegro MX and PC.

3.2 Prepare PDR for field season

The R1 CSE/IM Field Guide Supplementary R1 Appendix R1-C provides general information about the Juniper Allegro PDRs. Make sure that the PDRs are in good working order for field season, have the necessary accessories such as car charger, field strap, and carrying case.

Delete the ExamsPDR software and datafiles from the previous field season. Once a connection has been made, the PDR can be accessed, from the PC using Windows Explorer. From Windows Explorer, select FieldPC under Computer and go into the filing structure on the PDR.

S 3-31

The previous version of Exams Software will be in Program Files for the MX or C_Drive for the CX. Navigate into the folders and delete all versions of ExamsPDR.

The previous year’s datafiles should be in My Documents/stdexams for the MX and C_drive/exams/stdexams for the CX. Keep in mind that not all users of PDRs adhere to these filing conventions so you may want to search and make sure that all traces of old data are deleted from the PDRs.

3.3 Moving Files from PC to PDR

It is important to make sure that the proper filing structure exists on your PC prior to moving files from the PC to the PDR. See R1 Supplement to Chapter 2: Preparation and Design, Determine File Management System section. The table in this section indicates which folders should exist on the Allegro MX and CX. Using Windows Explorer on your PDR, create these folders if they do not exist.

Select FieldPC (the PDR) from your Computer.

Double click on the PDR filing structure

S 3-32

3.4 Creating an “stdexams” folder on the PDR

To create a “stdexams” folder on the MX, go into Start/File Explorer. Navigate to My Documents and Select Menu. From Menu, Select New Folder. You can then create a folder named “stdexams” to store the Exams datafile.

3.5 Removing old software and datafiles from the PDR

It is recommended that you remove all data, including the ExamsPC software at the beginning of each season, from your PDR prior to moving new data over. See R1 Supplement to Chapter 2: Preparation and Design, Prepare PDR section for further information.

3.6 Transferring software and datafile from PC to PDR

Open ExamsPC on your PC, then select File/Transfer, or click the dancing computers button.

If this immediately yields the error, “Cannot connect to PDR”, delete rapi.dll and ceutil.dll from the C:\Exams folder.

In the File/Transfer screen, the left side of the screen is the PDR, the right side is the PC.

3.7 Move ExamsPDR from PC to PDR

The following table shows where the ExamsPDR software is placed on your PDR. Within the Handheld|Personal Computer File Transfer Interface, migrate on the left side (the PDR) to this location.

S 3-33

My Computer/C_drive/stdexams

Navigate the PDR to the stdexams folder, Navigate the PC to c:\Exams\stdexam\”your project name” where your datafile is stored.

Notes:

• Moving data back and forth between a PDR and PC is just like moving files between any two computers, both have C drives and data is moved between them with a disk. This is done easiest with a cradle for your PDR to

S 3-35 sit in and hook up to the computer. If this is not possible, in some cases, it may be easiest to use a compact flashcard that fits into the back of the PDR and a disk reader connected to your PC.

• If using cards to transfer data: there are four physical sizes of flashcards, it doesn’t matter which you choose as long as the card reader connected to your PC and the card reader you plug into the PDR can both read the cards you purchase. Call the field coordinator in the RO if there are any questions. The RO uses compact flash (CF) cards.

• Whenever Exams software has a version update, ExamsPDR software will usually need to be updated. It will need to be downloaded and moved to the PDR by following the instructions in the moving files from the PC to PDR section of this document.

• It is recommended that you remove all data, including the ExamsPC software at the beginning of each season.

See Prepare PDR section for further information.

3.9 Start the ExamsPDR Software

For the Juniper MX, go to Start Menu/Programs >ExamsPDR – this should open up the Exams software.

When opening the Exams software for the first time, you will get a message that “ExamsPDR was unable to locate and open the most recently used PDR file.” Select OK, it will then say “Exams PDR will now open a datafile named SEData.pdr…” DO NOT USE THIS TEMPLATE FILE! Instead, you need to open the data file that you moved to your PDR. From the Task Bar at the bottom left of the software, select File>Open and migrate to /My Documents/stdexams to open the datafile file. You are now ready to go.
