For an overview and schematic of how data flows from the PDR into FSVeg and then becomes available for analysis, see R1 Supplement to National FSVeg/CSE User's Guide Chapter 1: Overview. Now that the data has been collected in the field, the datafile needs to be moved from the PDR to the PC in order to be cleaned and then loaded into FSVeg.
This Supplement to Chapter 5 offers additional information about auditing and cleaning Exams Datafiles prior to loading into FSVeg. It also has clearer instructions on moving files from the PDR to the PC than chapter 5 in the National CSE manual. Some of the information covered in this chapter is specific to Region 1 and is not applicable to other Regions.
Supplement to Chapter 5: Loading Data User Guide, Supplement
S 5-2
Move the datafile from the PDR to the PC Once the exam data has been collected, the datafiles (‘.cse’ or ‘.im’) need to be moved from the PDR to the PC.
Note: this is a similar process to that documented in R1 Supplement to National FSVeg/CSE User's Guide Chapter 3: Installing Software, Moving Files between the PC and PDR section.
If you entered your data using ExamsPC, skip to Auditing Exams Datafiles before Loading section, below
Step 1: create a connection between the PDR and PC. This is discussed in R1 Supplement to Chapter 3:
Installing the Software, Creating a Connection between PC and PDR section.
Step 2: Move file from PDR to PC.
From Exams software, Select File/Transfer
The File Transfer Screen is then displayed. The left side is the PDR, the right side is the PC.
Note that files will be moved to the area on your PC indicated in the upper right of the display where it says “This Personal Computer (PC)”. See R1 Supplement to Chapter 2:Preparation and Design, Determine File Management System section for suggestions on where templates and datafiles should be stored on the C drive, Box, and the Allegros. It is strongly suggested that you decide upon and use a consistent filing system on the PDR and PC.
For Allegro MX, navigate to My Documents\stdexams.
For Allegro CX, CSE files should be located in \Exams\stdexams On the PC, navigate to \ C:\Exams\stdexams\”your projectname”
Highlight the.cse/.im datafile(s) you wish to move from the PDR to the PC and then select the ===> arrow, which moves the datafile from the PDR to the PC.
S 5-3
Merging multiple CSE/IM datafiles into one file This is discussed in the National FSVeg/CSE User’s Guide, Chapter 5, Merging Multiple PDR Files into One File section.
• Exams software will not let you merge files for the same setting if the Sample Designs for the Exam Forms that are used (ie, Exam level >0 for the form) are different, or if the field selections for the form are different.
• Exams software will not let you merge files that have the same setting id with duplicate plot numbers.
This means that two crews cannot merge different data from the same plot into one datafile. The only way to enter different data from two crews into the same plot datafile (i.e. one crew collects the tree data and another crew collects the down woody material) is to have both crews enter their data into the same datafile. This can be accomplished by two crews using the same PDR at different times, or by one crew collecting the data on paper and then entering the data into the original datafile.
When merging two datafiles that contain the same Setting ID (Region, Proclaimed Forest, District, Location, Stand), the plot numbers must be different between the files. This means, if two crews are collecting data on the same stand, they must use different plot numbers (from the Plot Form, select Options/Change Plot Ids) or this must be done, in the office, prior to merging.
Creating an Exams Data Report Oftentimes it is useful to have a text file of the inventory data for each stand. From ExamsPC, Utilities/Run Exams Data Report will generate a report for stands in the current datafile. The Data Report is output to C:\Exams\DbLoaderFiles as “datafile name”_drpt.txt and is overwritten each time the report is run for the same datafile. Print the data report if desired. This report can be used as the hard-copy data for field checks. See National FSVeg/CSE User’s Guide Chapter 5, Load Data from PDR section Step 3 for step by step instructions.
NOTE: In the applications that are accessed through Utilities, stands are now referred to as Setting and the Stand ID has been changed to the Setting id which is Region//Proclaimed Forest//(Proclaimed) District//Location//Stand.
S 5-4
Audit Exams datafiles before loading There are two applications that check Exams datafiles for errors. One is a national audit program, accessed through the ExamsPC interface. The other is an R1 application, which is a stand-alone application. The datafile needs to be run through both of these applications before loading the data into FSVeg.
FSVeg Pre-load Check (ExamsPC) Start ExamsPC. Use File/Open to navigate to the folder that the datafile resides in, open the datafile that you would like to check. This datafile should be in C:\Exams\stdexams\”your projectname folder”. Step by step instructions and information about using this application is in National FSVeg/CSE User Guide Chapter 5:Loading Data into FSVeg. Check the data for errors. If there are errors, update the data in ExamsPC, then rerun the report to verify that errors have been fixed.
R1 Pre-load Audit This application, checks all data against accepted Regional values, such as what is in the R1 CSE/IM Field Guide appendices. The Region 1 Pre-Load Audit software checks all of the data in a ‘.cse’ file for missing or inconsistent information prior to loading into FSVeg. The audit compares all values against those codes that are valid for Region 1. It also checks diameter/height and diameter/age relationships. If you do not have the Pre-load Audit software, refer to R1 Supplement to Chapter 3, Obtain the R1 Pre-load Audit Software section.
Create the input file for R1 Pre-Audit The format of the datafiles (.cse or.im) are difficult for software programs to read and utilize. Because of this, the R1 Pre-load audit report runs off of the “.xml” file that is created in ExamsPC when the Exams Data Report is run. Therefore, a Data Report needs to be created prior to running the Pre-load audit.
Step 1: Select Utilities > Run Exams Data Report
S 5-5
Step 2: In the Exams Data Reporter window, select the settings that you would like to audit. You may select one or more of the available settings and move setting(s) to Selected, on the right. Once stands are Selected, the Data Report button will be enabled. Press the button to generate the report and also create the input file to the R1 Pre-load Audit.
For detailed instructions on generating an Exams Data Report, see National FSVeg/CSE Manual Chapter 5:
Loading Data, Load Data from PDR section, Step 3: Obtain a Report of the Data.
Run R1 Pre-load Audit Open the folder and double click on the PreAudit.exe file. You may make a shortcut to this application on your desktop. The screen below will appear, note that the input file is already set to the “xml” file which was created when running an Exams Data Report. Additionally, the output file is already set as PreAuditOut.txt, this will list errors and will automatically open once pre-audit is done running.
S 5-6
You will see a blank black window as the Pre-load Audit software is processing. You can minimize the window if desired. When this window closes, processing is complete.
The following is an example of the Pre-load Audit Report. Note: The input .xml file is listed at the top of the report, followed by information on each setting that is being audited.
Correct Errors and rerun Pre-load Audit From ExamPC, correct all errors in the datafile. Repeat the steps to rerun the R1 Pre-load Audit: Run the Exams Data Report, Run the R1 Pre-load Audit, if there are mistakes, fix in ExamsPC datafile.
Load Data into FSVeg In order to load data into FSVeg, you MUST have UMA roles of NRV_Data_Collector or NRV_Wizard. See R1 Supplement to Chapter 1:Overview, Obtaining Roles in UMA Manager section, for instructions on requesting UMA roles. Once you have UMA roles granted, be sure you have logged into FSVeg before attempting to load data. If you have UMA roles for multiple Forests (or have changed Forests) you must log into FSVeg and make sure the the “Admin Unit” on the first FSVeg Screen is set to the Forest you are loading data for, otherwise you will not be able to load the data.
If a Location is “Checked out” in FSVeg Spatial, Exam data cannot be loaded for stands in that Location. For further information on FSVeg Spatial/FSVeg rules, see National FSVeg/CSE Manual Chapter 5:Loading Data, Business Rules for FSVeg Spatial.
Step by step instructions for loading data in in National FSVeg/CSE Manual Chapter 5: Loading Data, Load Data from PDR section, Step 4: Load the data into FSVeg.
The Load Report is output as - C:\Exams\DbLoaderFiles\LoadErrorReport.txt and overwritten each time data is loaded into FSVeg.
S 5-7
Note: The Load Report should show no errors; if errors are encountered please notify the R1 Analysis Team
Inventory data can be loaded more than once if necessary. The loader will ask if you want to delete the previously loaded setting, before proceeding. Note: Setting data in FSVeg is unique according to Setting ID (Region, Forest, District, Location, Stand), Purpose Code, Measurement Date, and Exam Levels (tree, vegetation composition, surface cover, down-woody material). If any of these values have been modified after the exam data has been loaded into FSVeg and you are planning on reloading the data, FSVeg will assume that the data is different from that which was previously loaded. You will need to go into the CSE Form in the FSVeg Interface and delete the original exam that was loaded or edit the exam data loaded into FSVeg directly from the CSE Form.
To access the CSE Form, see instructions in National FSVeg/CSE Manual Chapter 5:Loading Data, Log into FSVeg via I-Web, Step 4 and 5.
Troubleshooting Loading Data using Exams DBLoader If you attempt to load data and you get an error similar to the following, then you need to replace your tnsnames and sqlnet files.
tnsnames error:
Go to the Exams software website and follow the directions at the tnsnames and sqlnet link.
