About this file
This document is a specification exhibit for the State of Michigan regarding replaceable cutting edges for snowplow underbody and wing blades. The specification details requirements for a curved underbody blade featuring carbide inserts and carbide embedding technology. The blade dimensions are standardized at 0.750 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 48 inches long, with specific hole specifications for mounting using plow or scraper bolts at defined intervals (2 inches at 3 and 6 inches from each end, then at 6-inch centers). The holes are square measuring 0.6875 inches with countersink features and are positioned 1.625 inches from the top edge of the blade in a straight line parallel to the wearing edge.
The specification establishes strict material and performance requirements for tungsten carbide inserts and embedding. Carbide inserts must be standard rock drill grade with 88-89% carbide and 11-12% cobalt composition, formed in a 25-degree trapezoid shape with minimum dimensions of 0.365 inches thick and 0.635 inches high, with nominal length of 0.995 inches and maximum of 1.125 inches. Insert hardness must meet 88.2 Rockwell A rating with a density of 14.35 grams per cubic centimeter and transverse rupture strength of 370,000 psi. Tungsten carbide tips are inserted using electric induction heating with brazing solder containing 58% copper, 38% zinc, and 4% each of manganese and cobalt, with minimum bend rupture strength of 70,000 psi. The specification requires carbide edge alignment with steel edge with tolerance not exceeding 0.024 inches and spacing between tips not exceeding 0.01 inches. Additionally, a 1-inch carbide-embedded strip of standard 8-14 granular carbide must extend the full blade length and remain flush with the bottom edge.
