1.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of this document is to provide physical plant telecommunications utilities and equipment requirements for any proposed SBA office space. These requirements are specific to SBA and include telecommunications access and pathways, the LAN room/closet, and all electrical and cooling requirements. These requirements are applicable to all new and/or remodeled offices provided to the SBA. All SBA office infrastructure must comply and be built according to these standards going forward. Any exception must be approved in writing by a representative from the OCIO. These requirements ensure that every SBA office site is configured to a common set of infrastructure standards across the enterprise which provides the platform for consistent and reliable IT services.

2.0 WAN Facility in SBA Building (mandatory)

In the main telecommunications room (demarc) of each building in which an SBA office is located, there must be Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) equipment and capacity already in place to provide the SBA office at a minimum: two (2) each high- speed telecommunications circuits. SBA uses optical carrier, DS3 and/or Ethernet circuits.

2.1 WAN Facility to SBA Suite (mandatory)

Each SBA office suite must have in place prior to occupancy conduit with excess capacity to extend the SBA telecommunications circuit(s) from the buildings main telecommunications room (demarc) to each respective SBA suite LAN room/closet (extended demarc. Conduit shall be a minimum of 2 inches

3.0 LAN ROOM SPECIFICATIONS

Equipment room spaces in SBA offices require adequate access in a well ventilated (floor & ceiling) area to house and secure all Local Area Network (LAN) equipment. These guidelines are based on TIA- 569

- B Standards for Building Spaces.

a) Floor space requirements: The room shall be large enough to allow no less than three feet (36 inches) for accessibility around all sides of the LAN equipment. For smaller networks requiring less than 16U of total rack space, a wall mounted LAN rack may be used. If installation of a LAN rack outside of a secured room is required, approval must be given first by the Office of the Chief Information Officer.

b) HVAC requirements: Adequate temperature and humidity control of the SBA network equipment in the LAN room will be provided 24 hours a day. No additional fire suppression is required for Regional/District/Branch offices (only in critical SBA data center systems)

c) One IT equipment rack (19”), minimum of 42 RUs bolted to the floor with horizontal and vertical cable management.

(Above picture is for demonstration purposes only)

d) Equipment Installation requirements: All operating computer equipment, distribution networks and backbone cables in the LAN room shall be installed using cable trays and 19” IT equipment racks with access from both front and back.

The sample drawing above shows a representative layout of the LAN room. It is important to check the depth of equipment which is to be installed before selecting racks to ensure a proper fit while still allowing 36” access around all sides of the equipment rack.
