INTRODUCTION

PURPOSE OF THIS REPORT

This document is intended to be used by those designing, building, and equipping new buildings, as well as renovations associated with existing buildings and classrooms. This document includes design guidelines for:

A. Telecommunications connections to each campus.

B. Critical technology space needs, including Main Distribution Frames and Technology Closets.

C. An IP network standard for both wired and wireless networks in each building.

D. Office of Technology Services Structured Cabling Standard.

This report presents pragmatic, step-by-step technology design elements expressed as Technology Standards. Bond Program architects and engineers should carefully review these standards as designs are developed, ensuring these minimum guidelines are included in the program and budget for each building.

TECHNOLOGY SPACES

1.1 Main Distribution Frame (MDF)

Larger buildings that are designated as an IT distribution point (this will be determined by IT per project) and new campuses will require a separate Main Distribution Frame to house local servers, controllers for digital signage, and telecommunications equipment. The construction must conform to the current ANSI/TIA 569 Standard for Commercial Building Telecommunications Pathways and Spaces.

A. The MDF should be at least 250 sq. ft. in size, as geometrically square as possible, and located toward the center or core of the building structure.

B. The room should be placed on the ground floor whenever possible due to equipment access and floor loading considerations. Avoid placing the Main Distribution Frame next to outside walls, elevator shafts, and/or internal fixed building walls.

C. All perimeter walls shall be full height (deck-to-deck), 1-hour rated construction, fire sealed, and sealed to prevent chemical fire suppression leaks. The ceiling height should be at least 9 feet - 6 inches from finished floor surface.

D. A primary 6 feet - 0 inches wide double door will be required for access to the hallway closest to the loading dock. All other door entrances should be at least 4 feet - 0 inches wide.

E. There should be no water or plumbing distribution piping routed through the ceiling, room, walls, or plenum.

F. There should not be any water related areas (coffee/break rooms, restrooms, etc.) above or adjacent to the MDF footprint.

1.1.1 Power Requirements

A. Estimated power load should be 100KVA/80KW for the entire room. (This figure is based on about 100 watts per square foot to support high density computing.)

B. The power shall be overhead mounted to the ladder rack behind the cabinets and racks.

C. All equipment outlets require “N+1” UPS backup (at least 15 minutes of battery backup).

D. All UPS systems shall connect to the emergency generator system.

E. Grounding and Bonding is required in accordance to the current ANSI/TIA 569 Standard for Commercial Building Telecommunications Pathways and Spaces.

1. This will require a ground bus connection to the main Telecommunications Ground Bus.

2. An eight-lug grounding bar, attached to the main ground bus via a 6- awg copper cable, provided by the General Contractor.

1.1.2 HVAC Requirements

A. 24-hour HVAC at an estimated 25-ton load, delivered via two 15-ton systems at either end of the room.

B. HVAC and power loads should be at least 100 watts per square foot (to support high density computing).

C. HVAC must be connected to the room Emergency Generator System.

1.1.3 Room Safety

A. The Main Distribution Frame should be finished with static dissipative vinyl composition tile (VCT) or sealed concreate.

B. Electronic access control systems shall be employed via access card technology at each entry door for security purposes.

C. An Emergency Power Off (EPO) switch should be installed in the MDF (only if required by code).

1. If required, the EPO should be mounted to the far left of the exit door and shielded by a plastic cover to prevent inadvertent activation.

1.1.4 Cabling Access and Pathways

A. Each MDF will require four (4) four-inch sleeves with collars where needed for horizontal cable distribution. To be specified per project.

B. Each MDF will require at least four (4) four-inch floor cores, with sleeves, for vertical backbone cable distribution to the street easement pull box. To be specified per project.

C. Cable tray shall be provided for at least 20 feet leaving the MDF.

1.1.5 Lighting

A. Required lighting to provide 50-foot candles measured 3 feet from the finished floor surface.

B. An emergency generator should back lighting.
