CHAPTER 3
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
3.1 Introduction
The OMNIPURE® Sewage Lift Station (SLS) is used to collect and transfer sewage to the Marine Sanitation Device. The lift station. when operating in the aut~matic (normal) mode. transfers sewage when a permissive signal is obtained from the Marine Sanitation Device and sewage is available in the lift station tank for transfer. In the manual mode. sewage may be transferred without permission. Refer to Dwg.
VF-LS-002 in Chapter 6.
3.2 Principles of Operation
Sewage (Black water) and other waste such as shower and kitchen drains (Grey water) is collected from various locations of the ship into the Sewage Lift Station holding tank via the 4" Sewage Inlet pipe. (The sewage may be passed directly overboard via the 3" Emergency Overllow line if the Lift Station fails to operate and the holding tank overlills. This system was not designed or constructed by OMNIPURE.
therefore. the ship's drawings should be consulted for details) During normal operation of the Lift Station. the sewage is pumped into tank V-1 of the Marine Sanitation Device (MSD) by the Lift Station macerator pump A & B which are located on the Lift Station skid. . Tank V-l serves as a system surge tank which allows storage at peak use periods and as a reservoir to permit operation of both the Lift Station and the MSD on demand. via level switches installed inside Tank V-l on the MSD and the Lift Station Holding Tank.
3_3 Operational Logic
The Sewage Lift Station normally operates on a 2-stage permissive process. When operating the Lift Station in the AUTO mode, operation occurs as the decreasing fluid level of tank V-l.()n the MSD reaches Level Switch Low. (LSL) The float switch- _ closing, energizes Relay R-4 which closes contacts 9 and 11 completing the circuit between terminals 46 and 47 of the MSD and 14 and 15 of the Lift Station. This is the signal from the MSD to the SLS that sufficient space is available in tank V-I to accept and process sewage. The remaining step in the permission process is for the SLS to determine that sewage is available in its tank to be transferred to the MSD. To accompnsh transfer, the liquid level in the SLS tank must cover both level switches LSL and LSH in the Sewage Lift Station tank which causes Relay R-l to deenergize, closing contacts 5 and 6 which completes the circuit through the HAND-OFF-AUTO switch (if in AUTO) to the macerator. (When operating the Sewage Lift Station in the HAND mode, permission to operate is NOT required from either the MSD or SLS control circuitry.) The Sewage Lift Station will continue to operate until the fluid level in the SLS tank falls below level switch LSL, or the level in the MSD tank rises above level switch LSH.. If the level in the SLS tank rises above level switch LSHH, Relay R- 2 is energized, opening contacts 8 and 11 providing a High-Level alarm signal to -terminal strip terminals 12 and 13.

3.4 Input Electrical power
A single user input electrical power source of 440 Volts, 3 wire, 3 Phase, 60 Hz, 2.8 KVA is required (connected to terminal strip terminals A, S, and C located inside the control panel) to operate the Sewage Lift Station. The power is then routed via a circuit breaker, located in the control panel, to an isolation transformer to provide 120 VAC power for the level switch controllers and operational controls. The input power source of 440 VAC, three phase is also rquted, via contactors, to provide power to the macerator pump motors.

4.2.1 Check Macerator Pump Oil Level
To check the macerator pump oil level, perform the following steps. If oil is required, use internal-combustion engine lubricating oil SAE 5W, 10W, 20W, 20, 30, or 10W30.
STEP 1 Remove oil level check plug.
Is oil level within the plug bore?
YES = Oil level is satisfactory.
NO = If oil level is below the plug bore, add oil. (fill to top of bore) = If oil level is above the plug bore, drain excess oil and inspect for cloudy or emulsified appearance.
Does oil appear cloudy or emulsified?
YES = The shaft seal or diaphragm is probably damaged, schedule for repair.
NO = Condition of oil and pump are satisfactory.
STEP 2 Inspect preformed packing (O-Ring, Part Number 56561) on the plug and replace if damaged.
STEP 3 Replace plug and torque to 2.5 foot pounds.
4.2.2 Clean Macerator Pump and Motor
To clean the macerator pump and motor perform the following steps.
STEP 1 Use a clean, dry cloth to remove grease and oil from the:
• motor grease cup,
• grease fill and relief plugs,
• oil cavity plug, and
• motor housing, bracket, and volute.
NOTE: Excess oil or grease leakage may indicate overheating, seal failure, or other defects. Repair as necessary.
STEP 2 Use a vacuum cleaner or soft bristle brush to remove dust and dirt from the motor:
• cooling fins on housing and the
• fan shroud.
STEP 3 Clean up any sewage leaks .
Chapter: 4 4-4 LS-001-01
4.2.3 Change Pump Oil and Inspect Pump
To change oil in the pump oil cavity and inspect the pump for wear or damage, perform 0 the following steps. Refer to Figure 5-6 when performing this procedure.
STEP 1 Ensure that the motor is de-energized, then:
• disconnect the wiring at the conduit box, (located on side of motor)
• disconnect any conduit or piping that connects the conduit box to the system wiring.
STEP 2 Close the input and output flow valves to the macerator pump. The 3" gate valve (see the SLS Flow Diagram on drawing VF-LS-002) is used to isolate the pump input flow from the Sewage Lift Station holding tank.
NOTE: The output flow from the pump to the Marine Sanitation Device is via shipbuilder installed piping, thus it is necessary to see the ship's drawings to determine the location of the valve that isolates the SLS from the MSD.
STEP 3 Remove plug (18) to drain fluid from the pump and elbow (16).
STEP 4 Using a sling or hooks, attach a lifting device to the two lifting eyes on top of the motor.
NOTE: Approximately 165 pounds require lifting.
STEP 5 Remove the six nuts (26) that secure the motor and bracket to the volute 0 (8), then lift the motor straight up to disengage the lower end of the motor
STEP 6
shaft from the bore in the wear plate.
Remove the shims (23 and 25) from the studs in the volute (8) and the 0-ring (24) from the groove in the seal plate.
: CAUTION ~
Support the lower end of the shaft to prevent damage to the impeller, abrader, and cutter bar.
STEP 7 Remove the oil check plug (Horizontal plug directly below the oil fill plug) and oil fill plug (3) from the motor bracket, then while supporting the lower end of the shaft, tip the motor on its side to drain oil from the pump oil cavity.
NOTE: Inspect drained oil for cloudy or emulsified appearance or other indication that water is present in the oil cavity and if so, repair as necessary.
Ii
Chapter: 4 4-5 LS-001-Q1
[ CAUTION )
Do NOT use any solvent or flushing solution when changing oil.
STEP 8 Inspect the pump for wear or damage before reinstalling it in the sewage lift station. See Table 4-4 for wear limits.
STEP 9 Check and adjust impeller clearance before reassembling the pump. To do this, first determine the number of shims required to establish the correct clearance, as follows:
STEP 9-1 Uft the motor and position the motor shaft over the bore in the wear plate.
STEP 9-2 Slowly lower the motor until the impeller seats firmly in the wear plate.
STEP 9-3 Use feeler gages to measure the clearance between the mating surfaces of the volute and the seal plate. Measure on opposing sides to get an average clearance. Record the average as dimension A and then lift the motor and related parts from the volute.
NOTE: The required clearance between the impeller and wear plate is 0.015 to 0.030 inch. The thickness of shims required to produce this clearance is the dimension A (previously recorded) plus 0.015 to 0.030 inch. The shims are 0.31 inch thick.
STEP 10 Install the required number of shims on each stud to provide equal clearance all around.
STEP 10-1 If the correct shim thickness can not be obtained by varying the quantity of shims, remove the screw (15), cutter bar (14), abrader (13), and impeller (22) to provide access to the impeller shims (23).
NOTE: These shims are 0.010 inch thick.
STEP 10-2 Remove 'one or two shims and reinstall the impeller, abrader, cutter bar, and screw and torque the screw to 23 foot-pounds.
STEP 11 Repeat steps 9-1 through 9-3 to determine shim thickness.
Chapter: 4 4-6 LS-001-01
STEP 12 Reassemble the pump and refill the oil cavity, as follows:
NOTE: Use lubricating oil, internal combustion engine, (SAE 5W, 10W, 10, 0 20W, 20, 30, or 10W30) Mil-L-2104C.
• Coat the a-ring (24) with petroleum jelly and install it in the groove in the seal plate.
• Install on the studs (27) the quantity of shims determined above and place an equal amount on each stud.
• Lower the motor into the volute and secure with nuts remover earlier.
Tighten the nuts evenly and torque to 23 foot-pounds.
• Using a new a-ring (17), install the plug (18) into the elbow and tighten to 3.5 foot-pounds.
• Using a new a-ring, install the plug into the oil check hole directly below oil fill hole (3) and torque the plug to 2.5 foot-pounds.
• Slowly add oil through the oil fill (3) hole and observe the remaining oil check plug opening on the back of the pump. Stop adding oil when it begins to flow from the rear check plug opening.
• Using a new a-ring (2), reinstall the check plug and fill plug and torque them to 2.5 foot-pounds.
STEP 13 Reestablish electrical connections, conduits, valves, etc. to original condition and remove electrical circuit warning tag and energize electrical circuit.
STEP 14 Check pump operation.
4.2.4 Motor Bearing Lubrication
Different lubrication methods are used to lubricate the upper and lower bearings.
Lubricate the motor while it is warm, but not hot.

4.4.2 Gate Valve
• 4.4.2.1 Gate Valve Replacement
The gate valve must be isolated from the system before replacement. Consult the ship's drawings and drawing VF-LS-002 (rear of this manual) to determine which valve(s) must be closed for isolation. After isolating the gate valve, remove the stud bolts and nuts to remove the valve from the piping for repair or replacement.
4.4.2.2 Gate Valve Repair

• STEP 4 Use a clean, dry cloth to remove the excess grease.
Chapter: 4 4 -14 LS-001-01
4.4.3 Level Switches
Level switches required for system operation are located inside the holding tank. 0 Refer to drawing VF-LS-002 for specific level switch mounting detail. Replace the switches by removing the cover from the top of the tank, lifting the level switch support rod from the tank, clean thoroughly and replace the faulty switch.
The level switch electrical detail is shown on the "Electrical Control Schematic", drawing E-LS-007. Note in the upper left side of the drawing, three switches labled LSH, LSL, and LSHH and identical labels appearing on the Terminal Strip Detail on the schematic. Each level switch has a "two-wire" connection from the holding tank, via the terminal strip, to relays R1 and R2 as shown on the drawing. These switches sense the liquid level in the holding tank and send the appropriate signals to help control the operation of the lift station. A faulty switch can easily be detected with a continuity check at the terminal strip. When the liquid level covers the switch its contacts open and when the level is below the switch its contacts are closed.
4.4.4 Control Panel
4.4.4.1 Control Panel Replacement
The control panel should not require replacement for the life of the system.

o
Troubleshooting techniques may require that certain equipment tests be made with power applied. Use extreme care to prevent contact with live circuits that could result in electrical shock. Voltages used in this equipment are high enough to cause severe injury or death.
4.4.4.2 Control Panel Repair
The control panel for the lift station is extremely easy to troubleshoot and repair. Refer to Figures 5-2 through 5-5 and Tables 5-2 through 5-5, and drawings VF-LS-002 and E-LS-007 in the rear of this manual. When following the Electrical Control Schematic, C~apter: 4 4 -15 ·LS-001-01 note that the incoming power to the lift station is 440 VAC, 60Hz, 3 Phase, 3 wire connected to the terminals A, B, and C on the terminal strip located inside the control panel. From there it is routed through the circuit breaker directly to the macerators via M1 or M2 motor starters and OL 1 or OL2 thermal overloads. A step-down transformer is used to supply 110 VAC, single phase for the lift station control circuitry .
It is important to understand the function of the Lift Station relative to total sewage collection and treatment system for the ship. There are three totally distinct entities; (1) the sewage collection system, which is detailed in the ship's drawings, (2) the holding or collection point, which is performed by the Lift Station, and (3) the treatment process, which is performed by the Marine Sanitation Device. During normal operation of the complete system, sewage is collected and routed to the holding tank on the Lift Station and after enough sewage has been collected to cover both LSL and LSH, Relay R1 deenergizes which closes Rl-2 contacts 5 & 6. Assuming that S-l (Hand-Olf-Auto) switch is in the Auto position and macerator A has been selected, a path for current -flow is established from the boltom 01 the secondary of the transformer through OL-1 Thermal Overload Contacts, through Ml, the macerator A motor starter, and on up to terminal 15 of the terminal strip. Notice that the path for current flow between terminals 14 and 15 on the terminal strip is controlled by the Marine Sanitation Device. (MSD) When the MSD is ready to accept sewage, its control circuits place a short across terminals 14 and 15 of the lift station terminal strip. This allows the current to flow on up through contacts 5 and 6 of R 1 , through S-l and on to the top of the transformer secondary. Then macerator A will start and continue to run until permiSSion is denied by the MSD (open circuit between terminals 14 and 15) or the sewage level in the lift station tank is pumped down sufficiently to close level switch LSL. When LSL closes, R1 energizes and opens its contacts 5 and 6, which breaks the path for current to the macerator. Notice that contacts 1 and 3 of R 1 also close when Rl is energized. This is a seal circuit that keeps Rl energized until the sewage level in the holding tank again covers both LSL and LSH.
If a malfunction should occur that allows the sewage level in the Lift Station tank to reach level switch LSHH the Lift Station will activate two alarms, (1) light L2 on the control panel and (2) send a Signal which is labled on the schematic "Remote .Alarm".
The "Remote Alarm" is provided for use by the ship builder, thus; the ship's drawings .
should be consulted for specific use, location, and wiring information.
Should a malfunction occur in the level switches, control circuitry, or permissive control from the MSD, the lift station can be manually operated at the control panel by placing the Hand-Oft-Auto switch in the Hand position.
A push button switch is provided on the front panel to reset the thermal overload heaters should the need arise.
After performing the required troubleshooting procedures to locate faulty components, use normally accepted repair practices to replace the component. Use chapter 5 of this manual to determine component replacement part numbers.
Chapter: 4 4 -16 LS-001-01
4.5 System Disassembly
The skid-mounted assemblies may be removed from the skid to be returned to the appropriate repair facility. Special care must be taken when removing electrical motors or other items which are powered by electrical current.
( WARNING )
Voltage required to operate this equipment can cause injury or death.
Prior to working on equipment, place all switches and circuit breakers in open (off) position and tag: "DANGER, SHOCI( HAZARD.
Do nQ.t change position of switch except b\' direction of NAME. .............................................................. Rale/Rank .................... "
( WARNING 1
This unit is designed to contain sewage. Flush thoroughly before opening. Take necessary sanitation precautions to prevent health hazards.
OMNIPURE does not recommend that the control panel cabinet be removed from the skid except in extreme cases. The cabinet will seldom, if ever, require maintenance that can not be performed in-place. Depending upon the Maintenance Concept employed for your installation, other assemblies may require removal and return to a maintenance facility. Drawings provided in this manual depict mounting detail for all assemblies, which should be followed when removal or replacement, action is necessary.
4.6 Preservation Requirements
The Sewage Lift Station contains electrical motors, contactors, relays, and other components which should be protected from conditions of the environment. When preserving for extended storage, OMNIPURE recommends that the macerator and piping be thoroughly flushed to remove any corrosive liquid and the lift station be covered to protect from dust, and stored indoors ..
