GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Harbormaster Tunnel Thruster

• Fixed four-bladed propeller.

• Propeller is mounted in an athwart ship tunnel so it can thrust the bow of the ship toward port or starboard as desired.

General Electric Bow Thruster Motor

• Direct Current (DC).

• Separately excited shunt wound field.

• 550 Horsepower.

• 1200 RPM.

• 750 Volt.

• 590 AMP.

• Reversible.

• The motor is powered by a General Electric Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) that supplies voltage and current to the armature windings via the pilot house or winch house throttle controls.

• The shunt field is energized by a constant current Field Excitation Module (FEM).

• The bow thruster motor unit contains:

• 2 HP, 575 volt, 1800 RPM blower motor.

• Internal space heaters.

• Sea water cooled heat exchanger 20 gallon per minute at 75 PSI.

• Tachometer generator (bow thruster RPM) , 50 volts/1 000 RPM.

• Air temperature thermometer mounted in the heat exchanger cooler duct.

Caterpillar D-398B Diesel Engines

• Four engines installed in main generator room.

• Each engine is installed on its own skid base and then mounted on a special sound isolation bed.

• V-12.

• 1200 RPM.

• 970 Horsepower.

Kato Brushless Synchronous Main AC Generators

• 600 KW.

• 600 VAC.

• 3 Phase.

• 60 Hertz.

• 1200 RPM.

• Aircooled.

• 0.7 Lagging power factor.

• Solid state rectifier assembly.

• Field pole windings on the rotor.

• The generator(s) are provided with regulation and compensation for parallel operation from the GEM (Generator Engine Module).

Main Generator AC Filter Modules

• Mounted along side each generator.

• Filters out spurious voltage spikes (unwanted frequencies) of the fifth and seventh harmonic that is produced by the main propulsion power converter units.

General Electric 600 Volt AC Switchboard

• Provides control, protection and distribution of 600 VAC.

• Supplied by constant frequency main AC power generator(s).

• The 600 VAC power is converted to variable Direct Current (DC) voltage, for use by the propulsion motors, via three (3) independent Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) converters.

• The 600 VAC bus can be split or combined with any or all of the main generators operating in parallel.

• Three (3) 600 volt SCR converter input circuit breakers.

• Two (2) power limit modules.

• Propulsion system components of the switchboard:

• Four (4) generator control panels (including the Motor Engine Module [GEM]).

• Port & starboard main motor Power Converter Panels (PCP).

• Bow thruster moyor Power Converter Panels (PCP).

• Port & starboard main motor Field Exciter Modules (FEM).

• Bow thruster motor Field Exciter Modules (FEM).

• Four (4) 600 VAC bus tie breakers.

General Electric Propulsion Motors

• Direct Current (DC).

• Shunt wound field, separately excited.

• 800 Horsepower.

• 750 Volt.

• 890 AMP (Armature circuit).

• 10-185 RPM.

• SCR powered from throttle input at MCSC, pilot house & winch house.

• The main propulsion motor(s) ventilation:

• Two (2), 5 HP.

• 575 Volt.

• 3510 RPM.

• 3 Phase

• 60 Hertz blower motors driving buff to centrifugal ventilating fans.

• The propulsion motor ventilation air is cooled via a prefex group water-to-air heat exchanger.

• Each propulsion motors is controlled by a Signal Electronics Module (SEM).

• The SEM is mounted inside each respective Power Converter Panel (PCP).

• 100 OHM at 0°C Resistance Temperature Device (RTDs) are installed:

• Shunt Field

• Commutating Field

• Air Cooler (Air leaving).

• Two (2) disposable air filters coated with non-migrating dust impinging tackifier mounted in front of the air cooler to remove larger carbon particles.

• Space heaters are located in the forward and aft end near the bottom.

• The heaters are powered from HVAC power panel P412-5 and controlled by the SEM. The 600 VAC switchboard must be energized for the space heaters to operate.

• The motor(s) drive tachometers used for monitoring RPM.

• The following external systems are required for propulsion motor operation:

• Lube oil (aft journal and thrust brg.)

• Sea water (air cooler).

General Electric Forward Journal Bearing

• 6-inch diameter.

• 4.2 inches long.

• Self aligning.

• Electrically insulated.

• G.E. temperature relay.

Waukesha Aft Journal and Thrust Bearing

• Combination bearing, flanged mounted.

• Forced oil lubricated.

• Journal bearing

• 8-inch diameter.

• 8-inches long

• Contains two (2) RTD's in the bottom of the bearing.

• Thrust bearing
